Chapter 37
I slowly opened my eyes. The area was completely dark, but I could see purple clouds rolling in. I stood up. I heard children yelling in the opposite direction of the smoke. I turned to see a whole mess of kids just running and playing in the garden. I counted that there were seven of them, five had red hair and two had blonde. I walked a little closer to see that there was a couple standing in front of a towering house. I gasped as I realized that the couple was Ron and me. Was this my future? What was going on? I turned to see that the purple clouds where approaching fast. At first, I was frightened, but as the fog surrounded me, I was immediately calmed. Then, materializing out of the mist, my mother approached me.
"Mum?" My voice cracked.
"And Jade, don't forget about me."
I looked over to see my sister. I was so happy to see them, but a feeling of dread crept over me as I realized something: I was dead. I had to be since my mom and sister were here. I had watched both of them die, so this couldn't be a coincidence.
"Am I-"
"Dead?" Jade laughed. "Not quite. You are in an in-between state right now."
"What happened to send you here, sweetheart?" Mum asked as she reached out and stroked my arm.
I closed my eyes and tried to remember. What did happen? Then, it hit me like a wave. I was hit in the chest with the Killing Curse by Voldemort. I must've said it out loud because Mum and Jade both gasped.
"It worked though," mum said, shooting a look at Jade. "It worked!"
"I admit that I was questioning it as well, but it sure as fuck did work."
I took in a deep breath, looking from my mother to my sister, having no clue what was going on. "What worked?"
"Remember when Marcus, Narcissa, Bev, and I casted that spell on you?" Jade asked.
"Oh, yeah," I nodded. "Right at the beginning of the battle. I had no clue what was going on. You all were mumbling things about protection, love, and..." I paused while I thought back, "...soul. What was that spell you all had put on me?"
"It is an ancient protection spell passed down through my family," mum explained. "I have never spoken to you about who you were related to on my side, but I did it within good reason. I had fallen in love with your father, but I didn't know what kind of man that he was. I was naive, and when he told me to never talk to my family again, I did as he asked. I had gotten into an argument with my parents over Michael. I didn't want to hear anything negative about him. However, I soon realized that they were right."
"What is your family name?" I asked.
"Macmillan," she replied. "I got back in touch with my family when I left your father for Remus. Oh, how I loved Remus. However, I went back to your father as an Order mission. It had to look the way it did, or Michael would have never believed that I had came back to him."
"Macmillan," I repeated. "Wait...did Remus know that Adeline was Michael's from the beginning? He knew about the mission?"
She nodded. "He did. It broke our hearts the way the mission had to be, but Dumbledore was adamant about it being believable."
Jade shook her head. "I never liked Dumbledore, and I am beginning to actually hate that man."
I nodded. "He did ask for some pretty extreme measures to be taken. However, parts of them did need to happen. Did you need to get pregnant and go back to my father? No, but it did give us some time together. It stopped me from hating you."
Mum squeezed my hand.
"So, was there anyone that I am related to that I didn't know about before?" I asked. "What about Ernie Macmillan?"
She nodded. "I have a brother and a sister. My brother, Marcus, for whom your brother was named after, married a good woman, muggle born, but good nevertheless. Ernie is their son, so he is your cousin. My sister, Pippa, married into the Greengrass family. She married the eldest brother, Cereus. Together they had two daughters, Daphne and Astoria."
My heart skipped a beat. "I know Astoria. I've been traveling with her for months now. She was who Draco was engaged to marry before. I can't believe that she is my cousin."
She nodded. "I was so distraught when I had heard that Cereus and Pippa had joined the ranks. I didn't want any of that for my family."
"So, this protection spell you put on me. How does it work, and why am I not dead if I was hit with the Killing Curse?"
"You have to take a piece of your soul and put it inside of the person that you want to protect," Jade answered for her. "So, it's exactly like making a horcrux."
"Only," my mother continued, "instead of selfishness and murder being the catalyst of tearing your soul apart, love is the catalyst. The soul is also not torn apart, but rather borrowed. The piece of the soul would still be apart of the previous owner. Once the spell timed out or otherwise, that piece will go back to the caster."
"So, you four put pieces of your soul inside of me? Am I a horcrux?" I asked, only panicking slightly.
Mum shook her head. "No, you were just simply a holder. Our souls were placed in front of yours as a means of protection. The Killing Curse is usually one spell that it can break. Meaning, that it would kill you. However, we placed four pieces of souls inside of you, which has never been done before, but Jade predicted that four would be the exact amount to protect you from anything."
"So," I cleared my throat, "are you not actually dead since part of your soul was inside of me?"
"Oh, honey," mum shook her head. "I'm afraid not. That was only a piece of my soul, the majority was still attached to my body. Unfortunately, I am dead. However, you are not."
"The spell worked!" Jade squealed. "That's all that mattered."
I looked behind me to see that Ron, our children, and I had disappeared. Instead, there was Draco. He was slumped against a wall, crying. My heart leaped out of it's chest. He must think I'm dead. For a second time.
"Go to him," Mum directed.
I turned to face her. "I don't want to leave you."
"Do as the woman says," Jade smiled. "Go to him. He needs you."
"I will be waiting for you," mum said as she pulled me into tight hug.
I then turned to face Jade. "I'm sorry that we didn't get to know each other."
"Me too. You go live a long and full life," she said, giving me a hug as well.
"I love you," I told mum and then squeezed Jade's hand. "I hope you are both happy from here on out."
"Me too," they both said at the same time.
I then turned to see that Draco was no crying harder than before. I needed to go to him. I was about to say goodbye for a second time, but they were both gone. I took in a deep breath before I walked straight over to Draco.
