Oh damn.
The sound of the door practically being thrown off its hinges startled me out of my thoughts. I sat up quickly—too quickly, as pain shot through my ribs, forcing me to wince.
Standing in the doorway was none other than Aizawa-sensei. His disheveled hair hung around his face, his dark eyes glaring at me with an intensity that made me shrink back instinctively. Yet, there was something else there, something beneath the stern expression—relief, maybe?
"Aizawa-sensei..." I started, unsure of what to say.
He strode into the room, closing the door behind him with far more care than he'd entered with. "You're awake," he said, his voice rough but steady. He crossed his arms, towering over me as I sat on the hospital bed.
"Y-Yeah," I stammered. "Just woke up not too long ago."
He narrowed his eyes, studying me carefully. Then, to my utter shock, he sighed heavily and pulled up a chair to sit beside me.
"Midoriya," he began, his tone low and serious. "What you did at the USJ... was reckless. Incredibly reckless."
I opened my mouth to respond, but he held up a hand, stopping me.
"I'm not finished," he said, his voice sharp. "You went into a fight against villains that you had no business facing. And that Nomu? You could've been killed. You should have been killed. Do you realize that? You were quirkless, facing something specifically designed to kill All Might. Do you understand how insane that sounds?"
I looked down, feeling the weight of his words settle over me. "I know," I admitted quietly. "But I couldn't just stand there and do nothing, Sensei. Aizawa-sensei, you were—" My voice faltered. "You were going to die."
He leaned back slightly, his gaze softening, though his expression remained firm. "And you think throwing yourself into the fire was the answer? You think risking your life like that is what a hero does?"
"I..." I trailed off, unsure of how to respond.
Aizawa sighed again, pinching the bridge of his nose. "You're an idiot," he muttered, more to himself than to me. "A reckless, idiotic sandwich of a student. And yet...You are my problem child.....I..... you.... *sigh*....."
He paused, letting his hand fall away as he looked directly at me. For a moment, I thought I saw the smallest hint of a smile tug at the corner of his lips.
"..., you pulled it off. You saved me. You bought time for the heroes to arrive. You kept your classmates safe. Against all odds, you made it out alive. Midoriya, you may be quirkless, but you've got more guts and determination than most heroes I know."
My eyes widened at his words, and I felt a lump form in my throat. "Sensei, I—"
"Don't interrupt," he cut me off, though his tone lacked its usual sharpness. "You have potential, Midoriya. More than potential. You've got the heart of a hero. But you're wasting it."
"W-Wasting it?" I asked, confused.
"Yes," he said bluntly. "You're relying too much on your instincts, on luck. If you keep going like this, you'll burn out—or worse, you'll end up dead. And I refuse to let that happen."
He leaned forward, his gaze locking onto mine. "So here's what's going to happen. When you're healed up and ready, you're going to train with me after school. Every day. No excuses. No shortcuts. You're going to learn how to fight properly, how to strategize, how to maximize your agility and speed. You're going to turn your parkour into a weapon. You're going to become the hero you want to be—but you're going to do it the right way. Understood?"
I stared at him, my mind racing. Aizawa-sensei, the man who rarely showed any emotion, was offering to personally train me. He believed in me—me. The realization was almost overwhelming.
"Understood," I said firmly, nodding.
He stood up, brushing off his pants. "Good. Because I'm not going easy on you, Midoriya. You've got a long way to go, but if anyone can do it, it's you."
As he walked toward the door, he stopped and glanced back at me. "Oh, and one more thing," he added, his tone softer. "I'm proud of you. What you did back there... it was stupid. But it was also heroic. Don't ever lose that fire, but learn to control it. You'll go far if you do."
Before I could respond, he left the room, leaving me sitting there in stunned silence.
