twenty-three

"It's meee!" Harry greets, stepping into the hospital room. Louis looks away from the telly and smiles at him weakly, putting his switch controller down.

"Hi, baby," Louis greets, pecking Harry's lips when he leans down. Harry sets his rucksack down next to Louis' feet, pulling out the camera Louis had asked him to bring.

"Why'd you need this, L?" He asks, handing it to Louis. Louis grins and takes it, grabbing Harry's hand and pulling him down gently to sit on the bed.

"I want to make a video for Layla," He explains. "For when she's our age. It'll be like a time capsule thing, y'know?"

Harry's face softens. "That's a great idea, love," He squeezes Louis' hand gently.

"Yeah, we can do one together and then separate ones," Louis grins up at him. "And we can ask my mum and Lottie and everyone else if they wanna make one too. Liam said he'd, like, edit the videos together. I'm kinda useless at stuff like that."

"I love you, L," Harry grins. Louis looks back at him and smiles. "You're so sweet."

"I know," Louis replies cheekily.

"Okay, it's recording," Harry steps away from the camera, sitting down next to Louis on the bed. Louis grins at the camera, adjusting his beanie.

"Alright, hi, Layla," Louis says to the camera. "We're your parents. Uh, we just wanted to make this video for you so you can see what it was like when we were 17. I mean, we're 17 right now, but we won't be when you watch this-"

"Dad's a little nervous," Harry interrupts Louis' rambling, taking Louis' hand in his own. Louis smiles weakly.

"Anyways, uh, we're at the hospital right now," Louis explains. "Not for you, though. Not yet, anyways, you'll be here soon," He rests his free hand on Harry's bump, making Harry smile a little. "Um, I have cancer, currently. I'm sure you already know that. Haz gets to come visit my sorry arse pretty much everyday, and today I asked him to bring me my camera so we could talk to you."

"It's probably his only break from Animal Crossing after, like, six hours," Harry comments. Louis looks at him and makes a face, and Harry giggles. "He named his island Layla. I tried to get him to name it Hazza, but he wouldn't."

"I like her more, what can I say?" Louis shrugs. Harry pouts, so Louis leans over and kisses the pout off of his lips. Once they separate, Louis looks back to the camera. "Sorry. I'm whipped."

"She's probably used to it by now," Harry points out. "I bet by now we're married, and you're forced to be whipped for me every second of every day."

"Haz," Louis blushes. "Anyways. I know we're probably really, really annoying sometimes. All parents are. I just want you to know that no matter what we do or say to you, we love you. We want what's best for you. And because of the mistakes we've made, you being one of them-" Harry nudges him with his elbow. "I'm just kidding. You were a happy accident. Anyways, because of our situation, we're probably gonna be really protective. It's not because we hate you, or we don't want you to have fun, it's just because we really want what's best for you."

"That's right," Harry nods. "And it also might be payback for keeping me up every night. Think my ribs are permanently bruised."

Louis laughs, kissing the top of Harry's head. "Anyways," Louis says. "We're gonna get everyone to make videos too. And me and Hazza are gonna record our own, so. I can't wait to see all the shit everyone talks about me in seventeen years."

"It'll all be from me," Harry teases.

"And it'll all be about how bald I am," Louis adds on. "I don't know whether or not I hope you have our weird sense of humour."

"I'm okay with it," Harry smiles a little. "As long as you get Dad's big heart too."

"Hopefully not my lungs," Louis quips.

"Or your math skills," Louis glares at Harry, and Harry laughs. "Quick, what's eight times thirteen?"

"Shut up!" Louis whines. "Alright, I've had enough of you abusing me in front of our own child," Harry laughs even harder, and Louis rolls his eyes. "We love you, Layla."

"More than anything," Harry nods, putting his hand on top of Louis', which is still resting on his bump.

"Can't wait to meet you," Louis grins.

Louis takes a deep breath as he turns on the camera. He's alone this time, Harry had gone back to his house to take a nap. "Okay, um, hi. It's just me this time, unless one of the nurses walks in. That happens, like, way too often. But, uh, I'm your dad. I'd hope you know that by now," Louis sighs. "Sorry. I'm nervous. I sound stupid–maybe the cancer has spread to my brain," He snorts. "Haz won't like that one."

"Um, there's a lot of things I want to say," Louis swallows thickly. He doesn't know if he's gonna get through this. "I wasn't gonna say this with Harry in the room, but I...I don't know if I'll be there. I don't know if I'm gonna live. The type of cancer I've got, it's really aggressive. Really dangerous. And considering I'm stuck in a hospital everyday, it's not looking too good."

"So, I just want you to know that even though we had you when we were really young, and even though you weren't exactly planned, that doesn't mean we don't want you. That doesn't mean we don't love you more than anything. My mum, your grandma–holy shit, calling her a grandma is so fucking weird–um, she had me when she was a teenager too. And she's the most incredible person ever. I hope I'm even half as good a parent as she is."

"Besides, you shouldn't ever feel unwanted, because I'm telling you that you are the best thing to ever happen to me. You and Harry. I'm sorry, it's probably weird I keep calling him by his real name, sorry. He hasn't decided what he wants you to call him yet. But, anyways, I also just want you to know that one of them most important things to keep in mind is to be nice to your parents. Especially Harry. Because, besides him, my Mum has been my rock through all of this, and I think if I had never gotten sick, I would've never realised how much I appreciate her."

"I hope you're okay, overall," Louis' voice is trembling. He's trying really hard not to cry. "I know that sometimes parents just don't understand. They don't get it. I tell myself I won't be like that, but I know I will. Being a teenager is hard, even when you don't have cancer and a baby on the way. If you're struggling, you should never feel ashamed, or embarrassed, coming to me or Hazza for help. I know there are definitely times I needed it, but I was just...I don't know. I was embarrassed."

"I'm sorry, I'm rambling," Louis laughs a little. "I love you a whole lot, and I'm trying really hard to get better so I can be there for you. Again, I love you. And hi, Hazza, if you're watching. I love you too. Alright, bye, Layla. Have fun editing this, Liam."

"Okay," Harry lowers himself down onto Louis' bed back at his house, smiling at the camera. "Hi, Layla. It's me. I don't exactly know what you're gonna call me yet. It's kind of weird, you know, saying all of this to a camera when you're right here."

"Uhh, I'm in your dad's room right now. I just got back from the hospital," Harry twists his mouth. "He wanted his mum to sleep there tonight. So me and Doris are gonna have a sleepover. I guess...she's your Aunt Doris, which is weird to say, she's only five."

"You have so many awesome aunts, and an uncle, and some really great grandparents," Harry smiles weakly. "I don't really know what your relationship with my mom is gonna be, but I know she loves you. Whatever problem she seems to have, it's towards me, not you. But your Dad's mum, she's the best. She's incredible. Having a big heart seems to run in the Tomlinson family, and I'm sure you'll get it too."

"Even though you keep me up all night, and never stop kicking, and make me crave the weirdest foods, just know I love you. We both do, I never knew someone could mean so much to me. And as much of a nuisance as you can be sometimes–you get that from your dad–you're really getting me through everything that's going on right now. Thank you, love."

The door to Louis' bedroom opens. "Harryyy!" Doris exclaims, running over and climbing onto the bed. Harry laughs, helping her climb up and sitting her on his lap.

"Hey, D, I'm making a video for the baby," He says, grinning at her as she looks at the camera curiously. "You wanna say hi?"

"Hiii, baby," Doris waves at the camera. "I can't wait until ya come outta Harry so we can play together!"

Harry throws his head back and laughs, and Doris laughs too, but she doesn't really know what they're laughing about. "See, I told you, lots of cool aunts," He says to the camera. "And Doris might be the coolest. Don't tell anyone else I said that, though."
