19 : friends and enemies

—Kayo

I never left. I sat at the bar, sipping on the same glass of liquor, watching her. She looked good with her long legs on display. She had on a pair of short, tight, black spandex with a black bra. It had rhinestones on the cup that sparkled with her every movement. A big smile came across her face as she poured a bottle of champagne into the glass of the "birthday boy."

I noticed the way his eyes stayed glued to her ass as he kept handing out tips to her. He probably thought each dollar would bring her one step closer to his bed. It didn't help that she kept smiling at him. He probably thought she wanted him, but I knew that deep down she really didn't.

"Hey, can I get you a drink?" A feminine voice asked from beside me. I tore my gaze away from Everleigh to look at a woman with blonde hair and blue eyes to match. She had a flirty smile on her face as she leaned in closer to me using the bar table for support.

"No," I answered, turning back Everleigh. She was too focused on her job to notice me watching her every move. Her every smile stimulated my brain with deja vu. It was intoxicating in the best way. Like something one knows they shouldn't have but craved it anyway.

"Okay, well, how about a dance?" the girl tried again.

I turned to her again. Her eyes were blazing into my own. Her nude-pink lips matched her light pink dress. I only had noticed it once she pushed her breasts out to grasp my attention. It wasn't like I was attracted to her. She really wasn't my taste, but the mere fact that she looked so inviting and open for anything was enough for me to almost down back a few shots and take her to a motel.

However, I had someone more important to take care of.

"Why are you still here?" Everleigh asked. I looked away from the barbie girl to gaze at the beautiful woman with her arms on her hips and a rise in her brows.

"I'm taking you home," I answered with a smirk.

"I told you no," she remarked with a scoff. This time, she crossed her arms over her chest and my gaze didn't hesitate to follow her movements. With my eyes on her cleavage, she quickly noticed and slammed her arms back down to her side like a drill sergeant.

"E!" someone called from the bar. My smirk grew when I noticed the tray of shots the bartender placed beside me.

She went by 'E.' I noticed that after her friends supposedly called her it every chance they got. Not to mention, the entire work staff made no bother to call her by her first name. I wasn't sure if it was because she preferred it, or they did. Personally, I didn't like it.

She leaned down to pick up the shots, but before she could get up, I grabbed her wrist and leaned into her ear.

"I'm taking you home, Evie. Bring that sweet ass right back here when you get off of work," I whispered.

"We'll see," she dared, pulling away from me.

"We shall."

With that, she turned around and made her way back to the VIP section of the club with a fake smile on her lips.

"I didn't realize you had a girlfriend," the girl said. I had forgotten she was sitting beside me. Anyone in their right mind would take a hint and give it up, but this girl was clearly determined.

I didn't respond. Instead, I took another sip of my drink, watching Everleigh.

"Most girls would find it creepy that you're sitting here, at my job, watching me, but I find it hot. I've always liked possessive men," she said. I turned toward her again.

"Is this why you're alone in a club, hitting on a man that doesn't want shit to do with you?" I asked. Her jaw dropped slightly before she quickly stood up like I had just burned her.

"You are an asshole!" she shrieked.

I brought my attention back to Everleigh only to see that, this time, she was already looking at me. The moment we made eye-contact she quickly looked away and went back to work. Shaking my head, I took another sip of my drink.

It was closing time. I only knew because the DJ left for the night and the club was only playing nineties slow jams. Very few people lingered around in the club with couples dancing to the music and people too drunk to even speak begging the bartender for another glass.

It wasn't long until I spotted the curly-head girl hurrying out of the club. I quickly stood up and went after her. She noticed me immediately and rolled her eyes, pretending she didn't know me.

"Evie," I called.

"What? Why are you still here? Don't you know what time it is?" she asked. It was well into the morning, but that only gave me more of a reason to wait for her. It was dark, no one was around, the world was sleeping. She was susceptible to almost anything.

I didn't respond, I just escorted her out of the club. She protested every step of the way, but I didn't pay attention to her single word. All I could do was lead her to my car with my hand attached to her wrist, preventing her from doing anything stupid like running away.

"This is your car?" she raised a brow. It was new and a gift from my boss after winning a huge fight last year. It wasn't anything I could afford. Being a fighter and only accepting wage from gambles while also sharing more than half with siblings wasn't a fortune.

"Yes," I answered. Opening the passenger door for her, I watched as she slid in.

"The only reason why I'm accepting this ride from you is because I really don't feel like walking, and Xyah is clearly too drunk to come get me," she said matter-of-factly.

I shut the door and walked around the car to the driver's seat. Once I got in, I put my key in the ignition and started my car up with a loud purr.

"Put your seatbelt on," I mumbled. She let out a loud sigh before grabbing ahold of the seat buckle and pulling it out in front of her before fastening it in.

"Where do you live?" I questioned.

She mumbled something under her breath because I couldn't quite catch it.

"What?"

"524 Maple Apartments," she spoke up.

I remembered seeing that place. It was about two or three blocks away. I started up my car and drove off from the almost empty parking lot.

"How's your brother doing?" she asked randomly. I side-eyed her as I came to a stop sign.

"Why?" I questioned.

"Why not?" she said like a smart ass. "The last day we saw each other, you were telling me about your brothers. You said you were proud. I just wonder how they're doing now, is all."

I could recall the day like the back of my hand. I told her about Nikolai since he was grasping English so much better than I ever could. Not to mention, how well he was doing in school. She also told me about her father. How he went on a date since her mother passed away. It was such a good conversation. Even if we could hardly understand eachother. It was the emotion behind our words that left the most impact.

"It's not your business," I answered. The silence in the car grew so loud.

I should've asked how her father was, but how fair would it be if I dismissed her question and asked one just as similar?

"Why are you so mean all the sudden? You used to be so nice to me," she voiced. Once again, I was side-eyeing her, gauging her reaction.

"I'm driving you home. Most women would consider this 'nice,'" I said.

"I don't know what women you talk to, but stalking someone and demanding they accept a ride home from you isn't nice. It makes you a borderline sociopath," she told me. I didn't see it that way, but her words did force a small smile on my lips.

I pulled into her apartment. She gave me instructions on how to navigate my way to her building, and once we were there, I noticed Xyah's car out front. I parked my car as close as possible to the pathway of her apartments. After putting my vehicle in park, I turned toward her.

"Thank you," she said. Without another word, she opened the car door and made her way out of the vehicle.

"I'll be here tomorrow to take you to work," I told her.

"I don't work tomorrow," she lied.

I held up my phone that had a picture of her work schedule. Her eyes widened in surprise. I could tell that she was wondering how I got the picture. Little did she know, I flirted with one of the staff to get it.

"Night, Evie." I smirked.

She slammed the door shut, and I got a beautiful view of her full ass heading into her apartment.
