Chapter 1
(Kaylee's POV whole book)
I awoke to my sister and second leader, Inara, staring at me.
I jumped up and said "What?" while standing up and shaking the dirt out of my fur.
"I sent out the groups. I sent Flower, Jay, Sage, and Shade to hunt by the rat heap, and Red, Aspen, Thunder, and Whisper to hunt by the Abandoned den."
"Thank you for following my orders, and sending two fighters with every patrol of hunters." I said.
"It's nothing. Don't forget about tonight. It's Dove, Tiny, and Shadow's Trainee ceremony. Have you decided what they will be?" Inara murmured.
I sighed "No I haven't. Send Fawn in here so she can speak with me about it."
Inara nodded "Will do." And she disappeared from my den.
WildPack's camp was by the edge of the Nofur village, near a prairie. I heard that even wilder cats than us, ones that grow as big as badgers when they are upset, and they eat bones, live on the prairie and in the woods. From the recent News-Sharings, SwiftPack kept challenging them over prey. But we were smart enough and when we smelled their borders, we stayed well clear of them.
I smelled someone at the entrance, and Fawn poked her head in. She mewed "Inara said you needed me."
"Yes. Come in." I said sitting down in my mossy nest.
She came in and settled down by me "So what do you need to talk about?"
"It's about your kits, actually. Have you decided what you want them to be?" I mewed.
"Well, Dove wants to be a healer. I want Tiny to be a hunter and Shadow to be a fighter."
"Sounds good to me. Send Dove and Blaze in here to talk about the healer things." I said curling up in my nest.
"Will do. Thanks Kaylee." She said before padding out to find the requested cats.
I thought about my past. Inara was my only family I had left, and I wasn't allowed to have a mate and kits. That was the payoff of being a leader or healer, you got the honor of being that rank, but you could not have a mate and kits.
I missed my parents and sister. Luca, my sister, had died at our birth. My father was taken prisoner by SwiftPack and was later killed off. My mother was living with the Nofurs, so I didn't see her much anymore.
Two scents hit my nose. I recognized Blaze and Dove. I called "Come in!"
The two cats stepped in and sat down. I said "So, Dove, you want to be a healer. Is that correct?"
She nodded "Yes. I don't think I would do well in either hunting or fighting."
"Blaze, do you accept her being trained by you?"
"Yes I do." He said, with a glint of happiness in his eyes.
"Then tonight she will be on the path to becoming a healer." I said.
The two left and I padded out of my den. I looked around at our camp.
We had our dens neatly sorted out. We had built them out of rubble we had found and plants that had been left around. The fighters den was right by the entrance, and on the other side of the entrance tunnel was the hunters den. Next to the hunters den was the nursery, and beside the fighters den was the Trainee's den. Next to the Trainee's den was the Trainer's den, and next to the nursery was the healer's den. And finally, the second leader and Leader's dens were facing the entrance.
I had never seen the SwiftPack camp before, but I knew it was large. They had multiple dens, but only one was for hunters. They had many more fighters than they did hunters, and they had no healer. If you were injured or ill, they would either kill you or abandon you.
Inara came up to me "Tonight is the new moon. Tonight you fetch Hailey back and you send someone else out. Who will it be?"
I turned to her. "I was thinking it was Aspen's turn."
"Sounds good. I'll tell her to prepare when she returns from her hunt."
I turned back to my den and settled down to sleep.
