Megan always had a soft spot for her little sister, Yoonchae. At 17, Megan was the older, responsible one—always studying, always keeping things in order. But Yoonchae, at 13, was a whirlwind of energy, creativity, and a bit of mischief. The difference in their ages sometimes felt vast, but it was this gap that seemed to strengthen their bond rather than create distance.
Megan often marveled at how different they were. She loved quiet mornings, sipping tea while reading a book or finishing homework. Yoonchae, on the other hand, would rush down the stairs, still in pajamas, her hair messy, full of energy, her eyes bright with ideas she could barely contain.
"Meg! Meg! I have an idea!" Yoonchae would burst into Megan's room, always knocking before entering, even if it was barely a tap. She never wanted to interrupt, though she did it all the time.
Megan, who was sitting at her desk, would look up from her math homework. She always tried to focus, but there was something about Yoonchae's excitement that was impossible to ignore.
"What's up, kiddo?"
Yoonchae leaned in close, lowering her voice dramatically, as if she were about to share a state secret. "What if we build a treehouse? Right in the old oak tree in the backyard! I've been watching how the branches bend, and I think we can do it. I can help with the design!"
Megan smiled, though the idea felt a little too ambitious. Yoonchae had an imagination that ran wild, and Megan often had to be the realist. "You know that's a big project, right? We'd need tools, maybe a blueprint..."
But Yoonchae was already in full planning mode, dragging Megan out of her chair and toward the backyard to show her the tree, like it was an undiscovered treasure. It was impossible to say no to her enthusiasm.
As they stood in the yard, looking up at the towering oak tree, Megan couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. Yoonchae's excitement was contagious, even if Megan wasn't entirely convinced they could pull off a treehouse. Still, Megan knew one thing for sure: Yoonchae would never back down from an idea once it took root in her mind.
Later that afternoon, Megan and Yoonchae sat on the porch steps with a notebook between them. Yoonchae's pen raced across the pages, sketching out designs while Megan offered input.
"What if we add a ladder instead of stairs?" Megan suggested. "It'll save space and be cooler."
Yoonchae grinned. "That's exactly what I was thinking! You're genius, Meg!"
Megan laughed. "I'm not a genius, I just read a lot about treehouses when I was younger. You get it from there, kid."
Yoonchae's eyes sparkled. "You should've told me sooner! You're full of secrets."
The two sisters spent hours sketching and planning, taking turns brainstorming and refining ideas. Megan found herself enjoying the process far more than she'd expected. Yoonchae's enthusiasm made it all feel like an adventure, even if the odds of actually building a treehouse were slim.
Later that night, after dinner, the two sat in the living room together, Megan curled up on the couch with a book, Yoonchae sprawled out on the floor, sketching more designs. The evening had a quiet comfort to it, an unspoken sense of togetherness. Despite the vast differences between their personalities, they had always managed to find a rhythm. Megan was the calm, measured one who loved structure, while Yoonchae was the dreamer who loved chaos and spontaneity. And yet, they complemented each other perfectly.
"Hey, Meg?" Yoonchae asked, her voice quieter now, almost hesitant.
Megan put down her book and turned to look at her sister. "What's up?"
"I was thinking... I know you're busy with school and stuff. And, um, you have a lot to deal with. But I just wanted to say... thanks. For always being there for me."
Megan felt a soft warmth spread through her chest. Yoonchae had a way of expressing her feelings in the most unexpected moments. It wasn't something she said often, but when she did, it was always meaningful.
"I'm always here for you, Yoon. You're my little sister. I've got your back, no matter what."
Yoonchae smiled, her eyes glowing with affection. "I know. You're the best sister ever."
Megan chuckled, leaning forward to ruffle her hair. "You're not so bad yourself."
The next weekend, when their parents were out of town for a day trip, Megan found herself reluctantly agreeing to help Yoonchae with her ambitious treehouse project. Armed with a hammer, nails, and an old blueprint they found online, the two sisters set to work. Megan, of course, did most of the heavy lifting, but Yoonchae was determined to contribute. She measured, cut, and made sure that everything was exactly how she imagined it—no matter how many times Megan had to remind her that "level" was important.
By the end of the day, they hadn't built a treehouse—not even close. But the tree had some makeshift wooden planks, a ladder that definitely needed more work, and a lot of memories of the two of them laughing at their clumsy attempts.
Sitting in the grass, covered in dust and splinters, Megan wiped her forehead and looked at Yoonchae. Her sister was grinning, eyes sparkling despite the long day.
"We didn't finish," Megan said with a smirk, "but we did pretty well, right?"
Yoonchae nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! And we're not giving up! We'll finish it next weekend, right?"
Megan laughed and nodded. "Of course. We'll make it happen."
Though the treehouse was never truly built, the bond between the two sisters only grew stronger. It was the time they spent together—planning, dreaming, laughing—that mattered most. And in a way, they had built something far more meaningful than any treehouse: a lasting friendship, filled with love and mutual respect.
As Megan looked at Yoonchae, she realized that while the years between them might be different, their connection was timeless. No matter where life took them, they would always have each other—sisters, companions, dreamers. And that was enough.
