Rules of Time
Jack continued glaring at the foyer on the first floor. He looked at all the ice around him, finding comfort and loneliness all at once. He looked down at his ripped sleeves and the remains of his sash. He slumped onto the railing of the staircase. He closed his eyes, feeling the chill of his frozen home cover his every being.
"What are you doing, Jack?"
Jack grinned to himself, shaking his head with closed eyes. I'm starting to imagine someone talking to me.
"Jack?"
Jack felt someone place a hand on his shoulder. Jack's eyes flew wide open to a short, fat man with the most gentle smile he had ever seen. He was bald with one hair curling at the top and defying gravity. His white clothes glowed, seeming to give a benevolent presence.
"Don't be afraid." The man flew down to the foyer, and his one twirling hair that stood three feet above his head bounced as he landed. He looked around as if he was lost. He looked up at Jack. "This isn't the ball, is it?"
Jack's brows furrowed as he shook his head.
"Oh. Good." The man smiled.
"Who are?" Jack stood up.
The man laughed a gentle and enchanting laugh. "Sorry for not introducing myself." He bowed quickly and placed a hand on his chest. "My name is MiM. I'm your magical friend."
"Friend?" Jack let out a small laugh. But he paused as he realized that MiM was being serious. "You mean..."
MiM smiled and nodded elegantly. "I know your parents. In fact, they are the ones who sent me."
"Sent you? They're dead."
"I know, but they are not entirely gone." MiM hovered a bit to place a hand on Jack's shoulder. "No one is truly ever gone. They are with us as long as we think of them. They heard your wish."
Jack froze in surprise. He felt himself becoming less hallow. It was such a magical feeling that he began to smile.
MiM smiled and landed on his feet. "Now, I didn't imagine I would have to help you with more than a ride, but there's nothing I wouldn't help you with."
"Wait..." Jack lowered his head.
"Hm?" MiM smiled at Jack.
Jack challenged himself to look at MiM. "Why didn't you come for me earlier? Years earlier. Why didn't you stop this?"
MiM's smile didn't flinch. "I was supposed to come the day your father never came back, but your stepmother was here." His brows slowly came together. "She used some sort of magic that did not allow me to come near her."
Jack's eyes widened. "That's why she kept me in the house all the time."
MiM nodded. "She is afraid of you, and she has every right to be."
"Wha-what?"
MiM smiled. "You are so much more than you could ever know. Just as you know Cupid, you can be known to many others, Jack Frost."
Jack paused and looked down at his hands.
"But! We mustn't waste time! Kasper is waiting, and we're delaying!" MiM laughed cheerfully and began whirling his mace around. "Frost so colorful, light so powerful, bring us a suit that will be so magical!"
Ice, frost, and snow began whirling around Jack. He felt all sort of layers begin to form on him. A nice pin striped blue, long sleeve shirt, matching vest, matching long blue coat, matching blue slacks, and blue loafs. He looked down at his clothes in awe. He even liked the light blue armband that latched on over his coat, matching the coat's light blue outlines.
Jack laughed in amazement. "Cool."
MiM grinned. "Of course. It can't be hot."
Jack laughed at the pun. "Now I can just fly there."
"No." MiM frowned and began to smile. "You're riding there." He flew out of the house to the chicken's coop.
Jack quickly followed and watched as the chickens became coachmen and horses. "Chickens of eggs, become something with more powerful legs." The white lights of MiM's magic kept Jack in amazement and awe. MiM's eyes narrowed as he looked around. "We need a carriage, but I don't see anything good to use."
Jack looked around in desperation.
MiM gasped in pure joy as he began to laugh. "A box! Little box of brown, become shiny and less of a frown." He whirled his mace around and began transforming the box into a long, large carriage.
Jack froze, taking in all the amazement of everything fit for a royal. The long, elegant blue carriage and white now-horses-and-coach-men chickens made him laugh in gratitude. He hugged MiM tightly, beginning to twirl in the air. "Thank you!"
MiM laughed, pushing himself back from Jack and floating to the ground. "Now, now, Jack there are rules."
"There's rules to this?" Jack began descending.
MiM nodded. "Think of it as a game."
Jack smirked. "Okay."
"For all this, you have to be back home before midnight."
"Why midnight?"
"That's when all of this magic wears off." MiM looked at the moon. "I am only so powerful, and I have other responsibilities."
Jack smiled at his little friend. "I understand." He smirked. "But technically, I have to be out of everyone's sight before midnight."
MiM smiled at Jack's technicality. He closed his eyes, blissfully. "You're just like your father, but yes. Bare in mind, you also have to be home before your stepmother. I don't want to hear her screaming up there." He seemed to point at the moon.
Jack laughed and nodded. "I have an idea of when she'll be home."
MiM smiled. "Now go on, the ball is waiting, and who knows, maybe you'll dance with Kasper."
Jack took a step onto his carriage and looked back at MiM. "Thank you, MiM."
MiM shook his head softly. "You owe this to yourself."
