Asur senapati Chandasur was angry. Asurraj Bhyankarasur exiled him from his kingdom as he failed to create problems in Hastinapur. He was planning to destroy Hastinapur and take his position back in Asurlok. But he needed someone, then suddenly he remembered Takshak naag.

Chandasur went to Takshak naag's new location and asked for his help. 

Chandasur, 'Once I destroyed Hastinapur, then the Kuru family will be weak and then together we can attack Indraprastha.'

Takshak agreed. He decided to take help from Devraj Indra who once decided to give a boon to Takshak at the time of need. So Takshak called Indradev for the boon, 'Indradev, please I want the boon for my friend Chandasur, please give him the boon that he can only be killed by your weapon 'Vasavishakti' but you will not fight with him.'

Takshak (thinking), 'Only Indradev has 'Vasavishakti' and he does not fight with Chandasur then no one will kill him.' 

Indradev, 'Tathasthu, I am not going to fight you.'

After getting the boon, Chandasur was very happy. He gathered an army of 100 demons and decided to attack Hastinapur. But Takshak gave him a different idea. On an auspicious day of Spring, all the Kuru family members of Hatinapur including Drona and Aswatthama would go to Mahakal temple present in a mountain north of the capital city. At that time the Kuru members did not carry weapons, only the guards would have weapons. So Chandasur decided to attack at that time. 

Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, Duryodhana, Bhanumati, Dusshasshan, a few other Kauravas, Shakuni, Bheesm, Drona and Aswatthama went to the Mahakaal temple. Adhirath also went with them as Bheesm's charioteer.They had plenty of guards and they were also confident that no enemy could enter Hastinapur to attack them. Little did they know that Chandasur and his demon army were present there in the disguise of the villagers.

When the royalties arrived they asked priests to start the puja. Suddenly a bunch of arrows hit their guard and the guards were dead. 

Bheesm roared, 'Who has the audacity to attack us?'

Then the demons came to their actual appearance. 

Chandasur, 'Gangaputra, today you all going to die, then Hastinapur will be ours.Ha..Haa..haa.'

Bheesm for the first time felt very helpless. They don't have any weapons, all the royal women were here,many innocent villagers were present in the temple and if the demons attacked them, then they had nothing to protect them. Bheesm, Drona and Aswatthama took the bows fallen from the guard's hands and tried to fight but were soon overwhelmed by the numerical superiority of the Asuras. Taking cover under the veneer of illusions that they created using their Asura-magic they shot volleys after volleys of arrows towards the Kurus. As the arrows were going to hit the helpless Kurus something extraordinary happened. Seemingly out of nowhere, there came a bright flash. A glowing sphere of fire surrounded the Kurus and devoured every single arrow that was targetted against them. 

Stunned by this extraordinary event  the demons had no idea what was going on. Their cover of illusions was gone, their eyes bedazzled by the glow of the fire....and then a silhouette appeared. A towering figure came forward, glowing like sun..   'KARNA,' Adhirath yelled with joy.

Karna stood there with his 'Surya Dhanush' is hand. His armor appeared and he was emanating radiance befitting that of a God. 

 'How dare you wretched demon attack my country'. The Asuras shuddered as Karna's thundering voice reverberated from all around. 

But they recovered and formed two groups and attacked both Karna and the warriors of Hastinapur. But the barrier of fire that Karna had created was not to be compromised. 

Karna, 'Asur, this is the 'Chandradhaal', as long I am alive, no one can penetrate it.'

Chandasur, 'You alone are challenging me, I will kill you first and then kill those humans.'

He ordered the demons to attack Karna but Karna summoned  'Sahasravaan', 'Vishvaan', 'Ulka astra' and many other celestial weapons. Like a giant lion destroying pack of hyenas,his daivi astras shredded the Asuras into thousand pieces. The Tridev had permitted him to use all his power only on the Asuras and his entire fighting skills has been put to display today.  Bheesma, Drona and Aswatthama were also shooting arrows on the mighty Asuras.  Chandasur, enraged at this unexpected development charged forward to attack Karna. Land shuddered, as the two mighty warriors clashed with one another, wind stopped and the entire arena got covered by a red duststorm. Chandasur, one of the mightiest of the Asuras found himself to be no match to Karna's strength. He was bleeding profusely from the various injuries he sustained at Karna's hand. Yet he kept on fighting.  Karna's weapons struck him with blows powerful enough to explode a mountain. Although shaken, Chandasur still held his ground. Karna's thought 'How am I supposed to kill him? Pitashree, please show me a way?'

Suryadev used his divine power to tell him the way to kill Chandasur. Karna thanked his father in mind and then he chanted a mantra and Surya Dhanush vanished from his hand.'

Duryodhana thought, 'What is he doing? He lowered his bow, why...is he going to surrender? No..no that can't happen. Karna never accepts defeat.'

Bheesm shouted, 'Karna what are you doing? Don't lower your weapon. He will kill you.'

But Karna kept on chanting more mantras. And then there was a thunderclap. Lightning came down from the sky and ended in Karna's right hand eventually forming a glowing bow.

Dhritarashtra screamed, ' Tatshri what happened, what is going on?'

Gandhari was scared, 'Is Karna okay?' she mumbled.

Bheesm was boisterous. 'Vijaya' he yelled, 'he summoned Vijaya bow! He summoned the Daivi astra once yielded by none other than Lord Mahadev.'

Karna still kept on chanting and a light ray, tearing the blue sky above descended into Karna's left hand to form an arrow. 

'Vasavi shakti' Chandasur panicked,' But that's impossible, Devraj Indra had promised me that  he would never fight me.'

Karna, 'But he said that his weapon can kill you. Today he himself is not going to fight you but his weapon will surely destroy you.'

Then he launched the weapon. There was a huge flash of light. The divine weapon reached the Asur and then there was silence. It was as if time itself has frozen out of fear. And then there was an immense burst of energy. Everybody closed their eyes as the action of the Daivi astra could not be tolerated by the mortals. And when they opened their eyes Chandasur was gone. 

After some time everything went back to normal. Then Karna shot another arrow the 'Chandra Dhaal' vanished. Karna ran to Adhirath, 'Pitashri,are you all right?'

 Dhritarashtra, 'What was that energy?'

Bheesm, 'Karna you are really my Guru's best student. How did you evoke Vasavi Shakti which is a celestial weapon of Devraj Indra himself? It is almost impossible for a human. Karna, today you have to tell me, who you are? You cannot be a common man. Are you a dev?'

Karna, 'Mahamahim, I am just a common man who is trying to protect his country. Why do you always underestimate the power of a common man? Why do you always rely on the Devs for everything. Mahamahim, even devs need us. Our worship gives them strength. So we can do everything that they can. Every human has a Dev and Asur in his heart. It depends on us what we choose to be...a Dev or an Asur?'

In the meantime, Vidur also came there with backup. Actually, Vidur came to know from his spies that demons were going to attack. He knew that army of Hastinapur was not enough for the demons so he informed Karna. That was how Karna saved them.

Shakuni thought, 'I don't care if you are a common man or Dev but I will use your power for my benefit. If I have you then no one will stop me.'

Duryodhana, 'Mitra you have to come back to me. You are my strength and I am not going to allow my strength to leave me like this.'
