Chapter 3.
It is three at dawn. I haven't gotten any sleep at all or perhaps I have. My mind is not engaging, still though I don't remember shutting my eyes. Here I am laying on this filthy couch, good thing we will be giving them away. The flowery comforter is still covering my body, I hate this comforter! The thought of throwing it away has crossed my mind multiple times but I would never do that, Elaine gave it to me on Christmas so it's somehow special.
The problem is that it keeps on reminding me of Elaine, who am I kidding I think of her all the time!
I get up and go to the kitchen. I take out a cup from the glass cabinets and pour the colorless liquid in my cup. I gulp down the entire cup within sec. I sure was very dehydrated. I sit it upside down on the sink. I return back to the couch that probably looks as if its preparing itself to give me nightmares. Moments later I find myself drifting off.
I'm am driving a black vintage vehicle looks like the latest i8 Chevrolet classic. I don't know where I'm going to but I'm still driving. Everything is black and white making it hard for me to navigate where I'm at.
"Dale!" Someone's calling for me. "Come home!"
I recognize the big black tree. I later see a house with a roof that has solar panels stacked on it. I know this house it takes me moments to register that I have just passed Elaine's house so I know for a sure fact that I'm going to my house.
"Who are you?" I ask.
"It is me. Help! Call the police." I know this voice. I find myself parking the black car I've never seen before on the side of the road and pop right out of the car.
I feel a forceful force drawing me to the black door of my house door. I open the gate slowly, it creaks open making a high, groaning sound. The force has gotten stronger its pulling me like I'm some armed paper hanger. I walk slowly taking in my surroundings when I face the front once more I surprisingly find myself on the lobby.
"Dale help me!" I look on the ground. Red liquid comes beneath the door.
"Oh dear not again! I'm coming hang in there." I turn the knob but the door doesn't open. I begin the throw myself on the door trying to open it. Tears rush out of my eyes "I'm coming!!" My arm starts bleeding but I don't care. I don't even feel the pain. I continuously keep banging, throwing objects, yelling at the door. Why is all this happening in my house?
"Stop it you are hurting me! Dale call the police! Dale! Dale!" I hear my name repeatedly being called upon on the other side of the black door.
"Dale! Dale!!!" I try turning the door knob. "Dale Mayfield wake up!!!"
I feel someone touching me, shaking my shoulder. I hear someone calling for me. I widely snap my eyes open taking in my surroundings. I take a moment to reinstate my mind that I'm in the livingroom.
For my nights shall forever be agitated and my rest broken by fearful dreams.
My mother is sitting on the edge of the couch. She pulls me in for a tight hug laying her chin on top of my mess hair. "Oh my poor boy. I'm so sorry." She is a sobbing mess.
"Dale my boy, are you alright?" I nod and stare at the old clock just above where the television stand used to be, it is nine o'clock. It's not likely that I wake up at this time, I can not believe that I slept last night. My body is feebly numb today.
"Get up and go get dressed my boy because today is gonna be a long day. I will be with Elaine in the kitchen, let me know if you need anything." I do as I'm told and get up. I fold the comforter then head back to my bedroom to put the comforter in one of my boxes. I decide to take a quick shower.
I have been in the shower for over fifteen minutes the water went from cold to warm in an instant than back to getting cold. I stay standing in the shower with one hand holding my body against the shower wall my head facing down as the water hits my intense muscles taking away all the numbness in me with it. That brown dirty thing really gave me nightmares, I hate it! I cover myself with a towel around my waist and exit the bathroom. I reach my bedroom door and close it behind me. I decide to wear my usual clothing, a lose t-shirt and some navy lose jeans and my pair of timberlands. My stomach growls, I'm hungry.
Elaine is sitting on one of the chairs in the kitchen, my mother is sitting opposite to her.
"Look who decided to wake up from the dead." Elaine gives me a crooked smile.
"Yeah, I'm alive alright!" I return the smirk l feel a whole lot better now that I have taken a shower.
"Your breakfast is in the oven" my mom says I nod and thank her for breakfast. I stride over to the cabinet to grab a mug so that I can make myself a cup of coffee.
"You know coffee is not good for you" Elaine states. Doesn't she have somewhere else to be? I brush her off.
I'm sixteen I don't need to be having this kind of conversation with her. Next thing she'll be telling me what is not good to eat. I sit at the far end and clear my plate in harmony.
"We are all going to miss you Elaine, make sure to come and visit."
"Thank you mama. You've been so good to me. You deserve to be rewarded with the mother of the year award." They laugh. Elaine captures some tears running down my mother's cheeks. "Don't do that!" Tell me she isn't going to tear up too! This is getting awkward.
"I won't." She wipes her tears using her own hands.
"To be honest ever since my mother died I haven't felt the pain of not having a mother no more, you have completely filled that gap with your ushering kindness! You've been there." Elaine's mother died from drugs eight years ago, her mother was practically a junkie she sold drugs for a living. Time and again she'd come over and ask my mother for a part time job she could do in the house, but considering the house we live in they wasn't much to do. My mother supplied where she could but unfortunately that wasn't enough for Elaine's mother she wanted more, more for her and her children. Easy money became everything to her in a matter of time but every wrong deed has consequences. Let me not dwell in her life she has come so far with life. Her family's story brings me to tears everytime I think about it. She lives with her father now, he does the same thing my father does which is mechanics. "Remember when I first started my periods?" I lost track of the rest of their topic. I clear my throat. They all look at me. They can't talk about stuff like that right in front of me! I'm a guy I don't need to be listening to that kind of information.
"Yes I do." My mother ignores my alarm as they burst into laughter I'm glad she managed to not to talk about it in front of me she must have noticed how uncomfortable that made me. I know her very well that she wants to continue with this subject. My mother has filled a huge motherly gap though.
Today Elaine stands doing her third year at College. She'll be graduating soon.
I finish my breakfast, help clean the house and pack the rest of our stuff. Good thing we moved the other things yesterday the truck doesn't have to come back for another load. The couches have already been sent away. I don't want to set my eyes on those nightmares ever again.
I can't believe how filthy the man that drove them away was, his facial hair was big and dirty. I swear I saw a fly come out of his brown stained beard. The man wiped off his sweat using a satin, who does that? But as the well mannered boy I am I gave him a small smile quiet surprisingly I even shook his hand.
I'm bored really bored of sitting and waiting for my father to return so we can go to our new house, I even volunteered to wash the dishes. I don't know where he said he was going but I heard him talking to my mom about some business deal to officially own a new workshop or something.
My father has always been the best Mechanic in my small town. It's only fair for him to also open his own car garage someday.
Fifteen minutes pass by of me staring at the yard like an idiot. My mother still is saying her goodbyes to Elaine for what feels like a decade, not that I blame her I'm also going to miss having Elaine around.
"What time are we leaving? I live in Sunnyside I have to drive back and the sun is about to go down five hours times two is quite the drive. My wife hates it when I get home late." I love seeing men that value their wives still exists here in Sunnyside.
"I don't know. We still waiting on my dad, he'll be here shortly." He sighs. Good thing this man is clearer.
"So this is it then, huh?" Elaine appears from behind me and sits next to me on the stairs of the lobby. I turn my head sideways to look at her.
"Yeah I guess it is." I look down at my feet.
"Well... I'm gonna miss you, you are such an amazing young man." She similes at me but I can see the unsettling feeling of us leaving through those bright blue eyes of hers.
"Me too..I mean...I'm going to miss you too!" I stutter what did I just say? Elaine chuckles and I flush. What made me nervous to begin with? Oh yeah I thought she said 'amazing man.' I roll my eyes at the misinterpretation.
I'm thankful for the car hoot. My dad has arrived finally, perfect timing. We pack the rest of our stuff inside my father's car.
"Let's hold hand family." My mother and I gather in. "You too Elaine." My father tells her. We look at our old house and say our goodbye to the shelter that has carried us till now.
Goodbyes are exchanged. I climb in my dad's car.
"I promise to always call and check up on you and your father." My mom vaguely promises Elaine. We leave the house and pull out on the street, Elaine has gone out of sight and I feel a hit of sorrow in my heart.
