Chapter 8: The Point of No Return
You rest your chin in your hand as you begin to nod off. It's 3:58 in the morning and Kanaya is fitting Kat's dress in a motel room Kat got for secret planning purposes. "Alright, twirl for me." Dirk says as he twirls his finger. He's wide awake and eager to help with this whole ordeal. She does as he says and spins as Dirk nods slowly. "Hm. Karkat? What do you think?"
You bolt upright, rubbing your eyes. "Huh...?"
"I asked what you thought."
You shrug. "It's fine I guess. I'm tired. I want to go to bed," you whine softly as you stifle a yawn. The bags that have been forming under your eyes are sure to be growing worse.
"Karkat, you really need to be paying attention. We don't have a lot of time and need all the help that we can-" he's cut off by the door opening behind you. "Well, look who's here. You're late, but that's to be expected I suppose. There's coffee by the mini fridge. We all know you're never up before two in the afternoon, so I'm sure this poses a challenge for you."
You roll your eyes and fold your arms on the table, laying your head down on them. You've had a long night of crying and, honestly, you just want to sleep. Your on the verge of doing so when you feel someone scoop you up and carry you over to the bed. They carefully lay you down and drape a blanket over you. You peek open one eye and open your mouth to thank them. When you do so, you find none other than your Prince Charming standing above you, smiling softly down at you. You can see a twinge of sadness in his eyes. "Didn't mean to wake you. You just looked cold and uncomfortable."
You frown and sit up a little. "What're you doing here...?"
He clears his throat and looks away. "Your dad asked me a few days ago to DJ at the wedding. I told him that I'd still do it even though you and I aren't uh..." Dave shakes his head and closes his eyes. "Kat wanted me to help with the music for when she crashes the wedding or whatever. It's almost like the plot of one of your movies."
You can't help but crack a small smile. "Yeah, it does seem that way..."
Dave takes a deep breath and finally looks at you. "So how have you been?"
You shrug and decide to play it cool. "Things have been good."
For a split second, sorrow fills his eyes before he smiles. "I'm glad to hear that."
You bite your lip. "You don't have to lie to me."
His smile immediately drops. "What do you want me to say? It kills me to see that you aren't affected at all by all those lost years? Yeah. I hate it. I hate that all of a sudden your feelings for me are just gone. Yeah, I miss you like fuck. Maybe you're right, though. Maybe it is for the best."
He turns to head towards the group before you grab his hand, causing him to glance back at you. "I'm sorry... And... They aren't gone..."
He frowns. "You said you didn't love me anymore. You seem to have your mind pretty made up."
"I was hurt, okay? How am I supposed to live up to all the other people that you'd rather be with? I'm not them. I suck, and I know you're going to realize it, too." Your ears lower as you slowly let go of him.
Dave intertwines his fingers with yours. "That's bullshit. Yeah, I may find other people that I'm physically attracted to, but they don't..." He trails off and let's go of your hand. "They didn't hold a candle to you."
Your eyes immediately widen in panic. "Didn't? What do you mean 'didn't'? You were just going to say don't, weren't you?"
He sighs softly. "You're not mine anymore, Karkat. Even if you were, I don't think I believe you when you say that you love me like I love you. Things are different now. You said we were drifting apart. If I couldn't keep you happy through all of that, there's no way you'll be happy in the future."
You attempt to stop tears from spilling down your cheeks. "All I want is for things to go back to the way they were..." You mutter quietly.
Dave looks away. "I'm not sure that I do..." He glances over at the others. "They need me. You need sleep. Tomorrow's a big day."
You rub at your eyes and sit up fully. "Dave..." He's hesitant at first, but eventually casts his gaze over at you. "I just want you to hold me again..."
He looks utterly torn. Moving cautiously, he moves his hand out to you. You mentally sigh in relief, thinking you'd gotten your wish. Unfortunately, no. He only ruffles your hair and whispers, "I wish I could, but I can't. I'm sorry, Karkat. I want to hold you, too, but I know I can't. I shouldn't. Please rest. You and I will talk tomorrow."
Your heart rate increases as you cling to his shirt. "Please don't leave... Please..."
He furrows his eyebrows and caresses your cheek. "This is the very last time I'll leave you." Your grasp loosens enough for him to turn and leave, making his way over to the group.
Suddenly, you feel empty. He doesn't even look in your direction again. Then, you come to realize that this is karma. Just as he'd pleaded with you to give him another chance, you've done the same thing and, just as you'd done to him, he denied you. You can still feel his warmth, and you let it lull you to sleep as you curl up under the blankets. It slowly dawns on you that this was the last time he'd leave you because he's never coming back.
