Chapter 5: Scars

"Kousei, open the door!!" Kaori was banging on the door and I could hear her from downstairs. I'm going crazy, I'm going crazy. I'm sure of it.

I went upstairs and saw her standing there, looking at me angrily. She was wearing the white dress she usually wears on competitions, her hair was clipped by a pink flower clip and . She looked more beautiful than I remembered.

"OPEN THE DOOR, BAKA!!!" she shouted.

"Ok. Ok. Jeez," I said, unlocking the door.

She jumped inside. "I'm gonna forget this ever happened 'cause I don't wanna waste my time beating you up," she said. I looked at her and smiled, trying my best to hold back the tears. She held my hand and pulled me downstairs to the music room. She lets go of my hand and started cleaning the room. "Again, not gonna beat you up."

"Why are you here?" I asked.

"Is it wrong for a girl to visit her friend?" she said, brushing the dust from the piano. "Because of you," she coughed. "I've to clean up this whole mess. Do you know how sad your piano would be? My dress is getting dirty." She looked at me angrily. "Are you jist gonna let the lady do all the work? Make yourself useful for once." I took a wet cloth from the kitchen and started cleaning. "Did I bring my violin when I came here?" she asked, placing her hand on her chin.

"Uh... no?" I said.

"Ok." I looked at her. Even though she wasn't alive, I'm really glad that she's here. I walked to her and hugged her from behind. "K-Kousei?! What are you doing?"

"I'm sorry for everything," I said, ignoring what she said.

"What do you mean?" she asked, confused.

"Like your letter, I actually..." She broke the hug and gave me a confused look.

"What letter?" she asked.

"Don't you know?" I asked.

She took a step back. "You're creeping me out, what are you trying to say?"

"You wrote me a letter before you died, remember?"

Her look turned into an angry one. "Have you gone mad or something?!" she shouted. "If I'm dead, why would I be standing here?!"

"I... I don't know," I said in a low voice.

Her eyes widened a minute later and she fell to the ground, bursting into tears. "I... I died," she cried. I kneeled down to her and gave her a tight hug. Tears formed in my eyes too and I just patted her back, ignoring them completely. "I can't believe I died. The last thing I remember was I was performing with you and I... died."

I've never seen cry like this before and I felt really bad for her. The guilt of telling her the truth filled me.

"Wait." She stopped crying and I kept my distance from her. "If I'm dead, how did I end up here?"

"You just showed up out of no where, I wouldn't know," I said.

She stood up. "I remember now!" she said, smiling widely.

I remained on the floor. "You remembered what?"

"I remember how the surgery took place and how I died. I performed with you because I got turned into a ghost and you thought I was your imagination."

"A ghost?" I asked.

"Not technically. I don't what heaven looked like but I do remember I'm not allowed there or something. I'm not sure. Anyways, I'm only visible to some and you're one of them."

"Oh." I stood up from the floor. "Can you go through things?"

"Unfortunately, nope." I nodded. "Wait," she said, blushing madly. "What's your answer?" She avoided eye contact with me.

"Answer?" I asked, confused.

"I confessed in the letter, didn't I?" she said, quickly, still not looking at me.

My eyes widened and my jaw dropped. "WHAT?!"

"You read the letter, didn't you?" she asked.

"Yeah, about that," I said, scatching the back and my head, nervously. "I kinda tore the letter and...," I stopped, noticing her grip on the cloth and her angry look.

"YOU JERK!!!" she shouted while beating me up with just a towel.

"AH!!! STOP!! I'M S- AH!!! SORRY!! SORRY!!!" I howled in pain.

She stopped and pouted at me angrily. "Baka," she muttered, look away from me. She gave a quick glare and left the room.

"Wait." I ran behind her. "What did you write in that letter?"

"Ya know, cringe stuff," she said, shrugging.

"Like?" I asked.

"You should have thought twice before tearing it." She gave me a mischievous grin.

"Ugh...."

"Let's go outside," she said, pointing at the front door.

"Why?"

"I look weird in this dress."

No. You look just perfect.

"Fine then," I said. "Wait, are you telling me to take you shopping?" I asked in fear.

"Nah, I'm gonna steal some," she said as if it's no big deal.

My eyes widened. "EHH..?!!"

"C'mon let's go," she said, going out of the house.

I followed her outside."Where are you going?"

"Ma Fille's," she said.

"You're gonna steal from your own parents? What's gotten into you?!" I asked, loudly.

The people walking in the street look at me in shock and confusion.

"Isn't that Arima-kun?"

"Who is he talking to?"

"Is he a mental patient or something?"

I looked down in shame and embarrassment.

"Shut up and come with me or people will think you're crazy and make sure you don't talk to me 'coz I'm invisible, remember?" Kaori said after laughing. I love her laugh. I gave her a nod and I followed her.

We remained quiet as I walked behind her and I couldn't help but stare at her all the way.

"In case you're wondering, I'm gonna steal my clothes and my violin," she said, still looking ahead. "If wanna ask why my clothes, I'm gonna stay at your place from now on."

"WHAT?!" I said, shocked. I cleared my throat and looked around to see if anyone was there. Luckily, no one was.
"Why can't you stay with your parents?"

She turned to me and gave me sad mouth-closed smile. "I know my parents would be glad that I came back and I'm sure they'll be able to see me but then when I leave again it'll break their heart all over again and I'd have regrets before I do."

"Then why me?" I asked.

"Well," she said, turning back and started walking. "I guess you're the only other person who can see me."

"Ok."

We walked for another 5 minutes and I wasted my time, watching her look at her surroundings like it was her first time and that made my heart beat faster than usual. I'm seriously in love with her. I watched her blond hair flutter with the wind and her eyes shifting to all directions.

She stopped walking a while later and ran quickly into the aisle that was next to Ma Fille's. I ran behind her, even if I'm confused about what we're gonna do here.

"Now what?" I asked, running.

"When I used to come home late, I climbed on top of a garbage can and go to the attic so that I don't get into any trouble," she said with her back resting on the wall. "Or... I climb through this window and pretend to be asleep."

"So..."

"So, I need you to distract my parent who are currently in my room until I steal the things I need."

"Are you crazy?!" I asked, shocked at her response.

"What? You want to take me shopping and waste all your money on my necessary things instead?" she asked, annoyed.

"You're a...," I paused, knowing that she'd be offended if said it.

"A... what?" She took a step small step closer to me to intimidate me.

"Never mind."

She groaned. "Please. You don't know what it's like to suffer your whole life with one life threatening surgery after another or how it's like to die in pain or to live with a bunch of restrictions, do you?" She had a really sad expression on her face, the one she had when she asked me to suicide with her. I thought she was trying fake it to convince me but she was serious. "You know what? You can go home. I'll stay with my parents and break their hearts all over again." She started walking back. "I'll visit you when I have the time. Thanks for everything up till now."

I felt guilt and sadness forming inside of me. She came back and I'm just pushing her away, trying not to get attached to her. She was really happy I could she her and I pretended to be annoyed when she came back. I'm losing her all over again. Dammit, why am I like this?!

"Kaori," I called out. She turned to face me. "How should I distract them?"

She gave me an earnest smile. "I knew you would agree. Before that, I wanna tell you something." I started to get nervous for some reason. "I don't act like my usual self do I?"

I thought about for a second and said, "No."

"I've noticed. The fact that I died scarred me mentally and I don't think things would be the same as it was before. I hope things would be the same between us." She walked towards me. "Just go talk to them about stuff. It's easy, once they get a topic to talk about, they'll talk about it for a while. I'll give you a call when I'm done."

I gulped in fear. I was all emotional in the past few times I saw them and I'm a little worried that things may get awkward. I walked to the entrance and I saw them cleaning the bakery through the glass door. I guess the store is closed. They noticed me standing there and gave me a smile. I opened the door and smiled at them.

"Hi," I said.

"Hi there, Arima-kun," her mother said.

"Here to buy something?" her father asked.

I guess I could something for Kaori. "Yep," I replied. We walked over to the counter. "6 canelés please."

Their eyes went wide. "Six?" her mother asked. "Can you eat all those by yourself?"

"My dad is...," I said. "uh.. he... came back to town."

"Oh, that's good news," her mother said.

I smiled at them nervously. This conversation going to be hard to keep up.
