Spearow Line

Spearow, Spearow, Spearow... it's like the more angry version of Pidgey. You can't tell me I'm wrong!

Well, actually, I guess you can. That's the point of this guide, after all, to share your thoughts, opinions, and insights on each evolutionary line of Kanto. But come on, you know I'm right about this one, at least!

Type Factor:

Much like Pidgey's line (and many other bird Pokémon), Spearow's line is a normal and flying combination. My opinions about Spearow's type combination will be the same as Pidgey's, but in case you did not read that chapter, I'll sum it up. Basically, the addition of the normal type doesn't offer Spearow any extra offensive advantages, but it does present a type immunity, which is immunity to ghost moves. So, essentially, Spearow gains a type immunity, which I think is fairly useful!

Design Factor:

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I guess we're about to find out... I like Spearow's design quite a bit! I think the hooked beak and the jagged feathers give it a rough and tough impression, and Fearow's needle-like beak really drives that home. Also, not to compare Spearow to Pidgey too much, but I feel like this evolutionary line succeeded where Pidgey's didn't as much—the change in design from Spearow to Fearow is interesting yet not too far-fetched! Whereas Pidgey just kind of... got bigger with every evolution, Spearow went from a tiny yet tough little bird to a fearsome predator! Overall, I like this line's design quite a bit!

Lore Factor:

Now let's take a look at Spearow's Pokédex information. According to the Pokédex, Spearow is a rather aggressive Pokémon. It will defend its territory viciously, even standing up to Pokémon much larger than them. Its cry is so sharp and loud that it can be heard from half a mile away! Despite this tough image that Spearow evokes, there's a hint of adorableness under it: Spearow can barely fly! The Pokédex states that Spearow cannot fly very high or very long without struggling, which is quite unexpected considering Spearow's rough exterior. But once Spearow evolves, its broad, strong wings make it a very adept flyer.

Stats Factor:

Once Spearow has fully evolved into a Fearow, the strongest stats it will likely have will be its speed and attack. The speed is the highest by far, almost to a frightening degree. The lowest stats, generally, would be its special attack and special defense. The weakness in special defense could present Fearow with considerable danger if facing off against an electric-type foe, so keep that in mind!

Evolutionary Factor:

As I said in the Design Factor section, I really enjoyed the physical change from Spearow to Fearow. It's interesting and engaging! I also think that the narrative given in the Pokédex information is sweet: seeing that aggressive little bird fulfill its vicious little dreams is heartwarming! Overall, I think this evolutionary line is exciting and enjoyable.

Conclusion:

Wrapping this chapter up, I think it's important to note that Spearow is much more than an angry version of Pidgey. Although it's a funny comparison, Spearow's line has a lot to offer that is entirely unique and separate of Pidgey, and any trainer would be lucky to have one on their team!

To my fellow researchers:

So? What are your thoughts? Is Spearow unique enough to set itself apart from Pidgey, or are they basically the same?
