Chapter 4

Thomas

As Thomas  walked down the hallway of the main pack house with Liam he started to grow antsy. If Kane was here does that mean Nia is here too? Thomas tried not to let his thoughts get a hold of him. But that couldn't be, if Nia was here Thomas would've sensed her. Thomas suddenly felt the urge to leave his friend and go to Kane, he needed to know how Nia was doing and Kane was the only way he could find out.

"Hey Thomas, are you okay? You seem kinda spaced out right now?" Liam snapped his fingers in front of Thomas's face looking more concerned as he continued to space out.

"Huh? I'm fine. I was just thinking about something." Thomas tried to be as vague as possible without lying, he couldn't lie or else Liam would be able to tell by his heartbeat.

"Okay... can we go study now?"

Thomas nodded and they continued walking until they reached the library. As soon as they sat down Liam immediately started to question Thomas's mood change.

"You've been acting really weird lately Thomas? Is there something going on? Maybe a late stage of puberty you're not talking about." Liam felt relieved when Thomas laughed at bit, but Liam had a feeling if wasn't genuine.

"I'm just tired, you know? These past few months have been so tiring." Thomas's friends didn't truly know how terrible these past few months had been for him. But it's not like he didn't deserve to suffer after what he did.
He ruined a perfectly good relationship because he just couldn't admit that his mate was a human.

"Yeah, I know how you feel dude, high school has been kicking my ass lately with the amount of work I have. But it'll get better soon once we graduate."

Thomas at this point wanted to laugh, graduation would only make his life worse, Nia would probably go to some college far away from the pack just to escape from him. At least at school he sees her everyday, but when she leaves she'll probably never come back. Thomas started to shudder at the thought of her leaving, which only made him worry more.

"Are you sure it'll get better after we graduate? Our parents may forbid us from going to college and force us to take over the pack."

Liam groaned as he put his head down on the table. "Why the hell did you choose right now to have an existential crisis? Now I'm stressed out too, and I just wanted to study." Liam emphasized the study part clearly enough for Thomas to understand but he chose to ignore and keep on ranting.

"Just think about it, our parents may force us to stay home and take over the pack, all they care about is the pack. When was the last time our parents actually took our feelings into consideration?"

Liam sighed and tried not to get frustrated the more Thomas continued on this subject. "I don't know okay? My parents only acknowledge my existence once a month so the last time I can even remember my parents asking about how I felt was probably in eighth grade. Thomas what's this really about? Because you've been acting weird lately and if you're comfortable enough to tell me I think you should."

Thomas stiffened, trying to ignore his heart beating faster than normal. He was being too obvious. "I've been worried about a lot of things lately. It's just been overwhelming lately." He started shifting in his chair under Liam's piercing gaze, it was as if he could read his mind and see that he was lying. And Liam could if he listened to his heartbeat but it wasn't a lie technically, it was a half-truth.

"Are you sure that's all?" Liam asked slowly as if Thomas didn't understand the question the first time.

Thomas got up and started walking towards the exit of the library. "Dude where the fuck are you going?" Liam questioned as Thomas opened the door.

"I'll be back in a second, I just need some air."

Kane

"You wanted to see me?" Kane tried not to roll his eyes when he saw the Alpha waiting for him at his desk with a smile on his face.

"Congratulations on your successful mission, Kane." Kane suddenly felt the urge to roll his eyes when he saw how pleased the Alpha was with himself, as if he was the one who did the mission instead of Kane.

"Would you like to sit down?"

Kane ignored what the Alpha said, not in the mood for pleasantries, he just needed the Alpha to get to the point so he could go home and sleep off his problems.

"It wasn't that successful. The building almost burned to the fucking ground? Did you know that was going to happen? You said it was a simple mission." Kane was about to explode from rage, how the hell could the Alpha be so calm about this?

"People could've died and yet instead of acknowledging it you're going to sweep it under the rug like everything else that has happened lately. Have you even told anyone about the missing pack members? Stop keeping them in dark when their lives are in danger.

"It was supposed to be a simple mission. Just like the other one you were assigned a few days ago." The Alpha didn't seem to be happy at all by Kane's outburst. The Alpha knew that no matter how many times Kane complained, nothing would change.

"You mean the one where I almost got my head chopped off? This is bullshit, where are all of the other pack warriors you claim to have at your disposal? Why can't you use them instead of me all the time?"

"I do not think those type of precautions are necessary. It's as simple as that. And besides, the Hunters would never expect a teenager to be the one behind all of their failed endeavors, let alone a human. Using you is more practical."

Kane wanted to punch the Alpha in the face so badly but before he could interject the Alpha continued talking. "These situations only escalate because of your recklessness. The only reason why these missions always go wrong is because you do not do what you're supposed to do. Not because you're always alone."

Kane starred at the Alpha, just trying to imagine how he would look with Kane's knife in his head. If Kane was quick enough he could probably do it, he'd just have to lunge for him fast enough.

But since Nia would be very disappointed in him, so he decided to go with a less bloody alternative.

"That's bullshit and you know it. I started doing these missions because it was the right thing to do. I wanted to use my abilities to bring down the Hunters, not because I'm some glory seeking narcissist. Why wouldn't I do what is asked of me? The problem is that something goes wrong almost every single time, which leads me to believe that you and the other pack leaders don't tell me the full story. Do I have to personally go to the council in order for you to see reason?" It was evident in the Alpha's expression that he wasn't prepared for Kane to threaten going to the council. The Alpha seemed to forget that Kane was formally employed by the council but Kane sure as hell didn't.

"Do we have to tell you everything? Why am I obligated to inform you about every single aspect of your missions when you still complete them regardless?"

Kane rubbed his chin, as if he was truly contemplating the answer to the Alpha's question. "Hmm I don't know maybe because I am risking my life for this god forsaken pack? And I would like to know exactly what I'm getting into instead of having to save a bunch of people from burning to a crisp?"

The Alpha sneered at the teenage boy, ready to send him out of his office. "You're being insolent Kane. It would do you some good to get out of my office and do as I say."

"And it would do you some good to realize that I've saved your ass so many times that I deserve basic respect. The only reason that the council hasn't put you on probation is because I haven't been telling the whole entire story when I send in my reports of latest missions. All because you've been pressuring me to omit the truth."

The alpha stared at Kane, obviously growing nervous the longer their conversation continued.

"Get out of my office." The Alpha growled as he tried to hide the fact that he was going to have to concede to the teenage boy.

Kane smirked and started walking towards the door. "Gladly, just remember this conversation when I send in my weekly reports to the Council." He didn't even bother turning around to see the Alpha's infuriated expression on his face. Kane knew he pissed the Alpha off and that fact satisfied him. Kane exited the Alpha's office with a small smile on his face until he saw who was waiting for him in the hallway.

Thomas.

It was good thing all of these rooms are soundproof otherwise that would've been bad, Kane thought to himself as he stared back at the Alpha's son. Kane almost didn't know what's worse, having to deal with an asshole Alpha, or that asshole Alpha's lovesick son.

"Oh no." Kane muttered even though he knew Thomas would hear him. Thomas smiled and walked towards Kane who gave him a small smile that was obviously fake. "Hey Kane, can I talk to you for a minute? I just wanted to ask you something."

"Are you going to beat me up? Because if you are I would prefer if you could do it tomorrow. The bruises I got earlier today are still too fresh." Kane said dryly, usually he would just keep his mouth shut but after his interaction with the Alpha he was feeling a bit braver than usual. He knew that he was supposed to pretend to be quiet and weak but this pack was getting on his last nerve.

"No, of course of not. Why would I do that?" The Alpha's son asked nervously, from Kane's point of view this conversation probably wasn't going as well as he thought it would. Kane sighed as he grew tired of Thomas's awkwardness. Why couldn't the guy just get to the point?

"You want to ask about Nia, right? Is that why you want to talk to me?" Thomas froze when Kane casually mentioned his mate's name out loud and hoped that his father couldn't hear them talking.

"I'll lead you out of the pack house, we can talk about Nia as we walk."

Kane had to try with all of his might not to feel pity for him, but Thomas should've known that his actions had consequences. Now he's stuck with a mate who wants nothing to do with him, for a good reason, obviously.

At first it was silent as they walked down the hallway until they were farther away from the Alpha's office. And it was too awkward for Kane to do anything but stare at his shoes.

"Is she okay?" Kane looked up from the floor to see Thomas shuffling from foot to foot, looking extremely vulnerable.

And now it was even more awkward for Kane, him and Thomas were not anywhere near close enough to be friends, let alone for them to be having this conversation. But he just cleared his throat and started talking.

"I mean she's fine I guess. She's just been going through stuff, as usual. I would tell you more but-" Thomas finished his sentence for him before he could continue.

"It's not your place, I get it. I wanted to know how she's doing... I just wanna talk to her."
Kane almost winced when Thomas's voice broke at the end of his sentence. This was getting way too personal for Kane, Thomas barely speaks to Kane and now all of a sudden he's breaking down in front of him.

"I can ask her, if you want." Kane said quickly, he barely registering the words that were coming out of his mouth at that split second. He just needed to leave before Thomas started sobbing, people crying made him uncomfortable.

Kane stopped in front of the front door that would be his exit ticket away from this conversation. Anything at this point would work, Kane was just happy that he was able to get away.

"Really? Thank you so much." Thomas went from looking like a kicked puppy to a kid on Christmas in less than a second, and Kane just took that as his signal to leave.

"Yup, dont mention it. Bye!" Then he speed walked out of the pack house, trying to get as far away as possible.

"At least now I can go home and take a nap." Kane tried not to walk too fast, but getting away from that weird situation was the priority.

"I hate this pack so much." He shuddered and walked passed the gates, intent on trying his hardest to stay away from everyone who inhabits that place.

End of chapter. I'm not really satisfied with this chapter at all. Let me know what you think in the comments. I appreciate it. Correct me if you find any grammar mistakes. I'm not that good a grammar.
