Chapter 3
Kane
"So... when did you start practicing magic?" Kane awkwardly trailed off as Nia gave him a wild grin.
The pair was in Nia's room, sitting on her bed, looking at the brown leather-bound spell book that was placed in between them. The book itself looked old and tattered but there was something off about it that Kane just couldn't place. The book radiated power in subtle way, as if it held unrecognizable secrets that had been lost for a thousands of years.
"I started before you transferred to our school. At first I just thought the book was just cool because I had always admired magic in fantasy books. But then one day I was looking at a spell, it was a very simple spell, probably designed for a child just starting out but when I said the spell... it worked." Nia tucked her hair behind her ear and started flipping through the book.
"But that's not possible is it? Unless you're a witch and you just never mentioned it?" Kane questioned as he raised one eyebrow.
Nia giggled, "Of course I'm not a witch, my bloodline is strictly human. But..." She smiled at him and got up off of her bed. Nia walked over to her bookshelf and plucks and book off the shelf. This book looks to be much heavier than the spell book. His assumption was confirmed when she dropped it on the bed and Kane quickly yanked his fingers away to avoid them being crushed.
"Where the hell did you get this from?!" Kane asked as he tried not to worry about the excited gleam in Nia's eyes.
"The pack library of course, it contains important knowledge of the supernatural, not actual spells like what's in the spell book. I needed to know as much as I could about werewolves and their customs, that why I originally checked out the boo. I renew the book every two weeks, no one else wants it anyway." Her smile faltered as she thought about why she first checked out the book from the library. She quickly passed the chapters on werewolves, trying not to become upset.
"So what did you find out about witches?" Kane asked almost quickly, probably because he was desperate to change the subject. Talking about werewolves would mean talking about... him.
"I learned that witches are supernatural creatures that basically have control over aspects of the world around us, it doesn't matter if it's natural or supernatural. Most witches have an affinity for a specific aspect. The most common affinities are usually element based." Nia turned the book around and showed him the passage she had just mentioned. Kane read the whole entire page and frowned in confusion once he got to the last line.
"But it also says that humans cannot be magic users, how are you using magic if you're not a witch?" Nia avoided his eyes as she turned to the next page.
"Read the next day page and then you'll understand. I was confused at first too." Kane eagerly read the next page out loud in order to understand what was going on.
"It is a known fact that humans cannot be magic users. But in the past century it seems that there can be exceptions to this rule. If a human has strong ties to the supernatural world it is possible that the human would be able to cast spells and in some cases gain an affinity (but only if the connection is extremely personal). In majority of the studies conducted it seems that the humans who can use magic have been the soulmate of a very powerful supernatural creature (ex. An Alpha Werewolf)."
"Oh..." Kane trailed off, trying not to show how bad he felt for Nia.
Nia just shrugged and laughed it off. "Crazy right? I'm just so happy that I can do magic. If I'm being honest I should thank Thom-"
She quickly stopped herself from saying his name only to start muttering under her breath as she closed the book and tossed it on the floor.
"Nia, it's okay. If you talk about it, you'll probably feel better." Kane put his hand on her shoulder, noting the fact that she was shaking.
"I'm fine." Nia gently took Kane's hand off of her shoulder and opened the spell book again.
"This is the spell I did when you were injured yesterday, it was a relatively easy healing spell but I didn't really practice before I attempted it. That's probably why I passed out."
"Nia, you shouldn't be endangering yourself like that. " Nia wasn't annoyed at the fact that she was so concerned for her but Kane was being hypocritical. Kane put himself in danger on a continuous basis and expected Nia to be okay with it.
"Kane, you can't act like that when when you are constantly putting yourself in danger by doing those missions. I'm happy you're worried about me but I don't mind taking a couple risks if it means that I can help you. You're my best friend."
"I know that Nia. I just don't want you to get hurt. Magic isn't a fun toy that you play with whenever you're bored. If you cast a spell wrong you could die." Kane wasn't trying to scare Nia but at the same time she shouldn't needlessly put herself in danger. She needs to be careful.
"But you go on missions the time, so how is this any different? I'm learning magic to help you. I need this." Nakia held the spell book to her chest, almost sounding hysterical as she spoke. Kane could tell it was deeper than that but he knew Nia didn't want to be interrogated at the moment.
"Nia, I've been trained in combat since I could walk. And I'm risking my life being aware of the consequences. You don't know what's could happen. You just admitted that you tried a simple healing spell and you passed out from exhaustion. I know you won't listen to me but please don't try any spells without consideration first."
Nia stared at the book, trying to avoid Kane's piercing gaze. "Fine."
Kane opened his mouth to say something but before he could, his cell phone started to vibrate in the pocket of his hoodie. He looked at the phone only to see a notification that his meeting with the Alpha was about start...
Without him. Because he was still at Nia's house.
"Ah shit! Nia we will finish the conversation later. I'm late for my meeting." Kane quickly grabbed his bag and jumped down the stairs.
"Kane, where you going? We were just about to have dinner!" Nia's dad yelled after Kane as he peered out of the kitchen watching Kane practically sprinting out of their house.
"I'll be back later, I just have something important to do." He waved at Nia's mom on the couch who was looking extremely bewildered and then closed the door quickly.
"I fucking hate this pack." He muttered, trying not to panic.
Liam
"Dad, we have to do something about these Hunter attacks. They're just getting worse! And by not doing anything about it we just look weak." Liam tried not to sigh as Thomas was pacing around his father's office. The more frequent these attacks become the more irritable Thomas gets. Especially since his dad doesn't seem to be doing shit about it.
"Thomas, we have the situation under control. There is no need for you to worry about this, focus on your schoolwork." Liam tried not to laugh when Thomas glared at his father, his expression was hilarious.
"Under control? They set a building on fire yesterday! That's what you call a situation being controlled? Then I would hate to see how you handle situations you can't control. These are premeditated terrorist attacks from an organization determined to kill supernatural beings!"
"Thomas, the situation is under control. We have plans in place, so there is no need for you to worry. Don't make me repeat myself again."
"And what are those plans? Are they safe? Do they put innocent lives at risk?" Thomas stopped pacing to look at his father who was growing very annoyed with his son as Thomas's presence in his office increased.
In the corner of Liam's eye he saw the Alpha's nostrils flair as he raised his hand up to Thomas's face for talking back. Thomas quietly flinched as his father got up from his chair and Liam quickly stood up from the chair he was sitting it to stand next to Thomas. Only then did the Alpha come to the realization that Liam was still in the room.
"When you need to know you will know, but for now you need to focus on your studies." Then Thomas's father adjusted his suit jacket and sat back down.
Liam tried not to roll his eyes in order to maintain his role as the quiet observer but the Alpha was obviously being so fucking cryptic about everything. If they're supposed to be the future leaders of the pack why can't they know anything?
"Will focusing on my studies keep us from being hunted down and killed?" Liam asked as the Alpha glared at him for his comment.
"Why are you here Liam?"
Liam smirked at the Alpha, shrugging off the question. "That's a good question, Thomas was gonna help me with my math homework. I followed him and now I'm here because I'm amused by your arguments. Satisfied?" Liam smiled when the Alpha started struggling to control his anger.
"Son, please take your friend and get out of my office." The Alpha emphasized his few last words carefully as he pointed towards the door.
"Fine, but I'm talking to mom about this later."
Liam snickered when he saw the Alpha paled at the thought getting in trouble with his mate.
Thomas and Liam then proceeded to exit the Alpha's office, with Liam stifling his laughter on the way out.
"Thanks for having my back in there Liam. I don't know what he would've done if you weren't there." Thomas said as let out a breath of relief.
"You can't let him keep bluffing like that. He has no right to scare you with empty threats." Liam told Thomas, as they walked down the hallway, his anger only continuing to fester. "You think he would be happy that you actually give a damn but no, he isn't."
"I just can't believe he's so stubborn about this. I don't understand why he can't keep me in the loop." Thomas sighed as they walked down the hallway to study in the library.
"Probably because he thinks we're young and stupid." Liam suggested.
"But that's not a legitimate reason though he should-" Thomas suddenly stopped talking as they saw Kane Zaveri running down the hallway towards the in the direction of the Alpha's office.
Liam glared at Kane and stopped him with his hand, pushing the boy backwards on the floor as he tried to run past them.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Liam snarled as Kane just got up and sighed, trying to walk past them only to be shoved by Liam again.
"I have a meeting with the Alpha. And I'm already late so could you please move?" Kane tried not to shrink back in fear from Liam as he growled at him. Poor guy, Thomas thought to himself, he's obviously so scared of Liam.
It was obvious that the guy was intimidated by Liam. But that didn't surprise anyone, unlike the others wolves who bullied Kane for getting in their way, Liam sought out humans for fun. Thomas has yet to see him be amicable with anyone besides his tight-knit group of friends and his occasional hook up. And it's kind of concerning, to say the least.
"The Alpha didn't mention any meeting. We were just in his office. So what the hell are you doing here?"
"Maybe he didn't mention the meeting to you guys because it's not that important?" Kane asked as he tried not to sound rude, too tired at this point to be okay with getting beat up. His last mission was way more tiring than he let on.
"Liam, just leave him alone. Come on, let's go study." Thomas, who had been observing the whole encounter finally spoke. Liam look him up and down and then shoved him again, just for fun. But he still listened to Thomas and let Kane go. Kane sighed in relief as both of the boys walked down the hallway, away from him.
But Liam was just annoyed with Thomas. "Why did you let him go?"
"You were being too harsh. He was just going to talk to my dad, why do you have to be such a dick sometimes?"
"I can't help it. It's like a itch that I have to scratch." Liam made a gesture of frantically scratching his skin as if he had a incurable skin disease. Thomas playfully shoved him and Liam laughed.
"That itch is gonna end up screwing you over if you don't watch out." Thomas warned him as they reached the library.
"I highly doubt that, Thomas."
"Sure."
End of Chapter.
Edit: My writing is still garbage lmao
