Chapter 13

Kane

"I knew Liam was a fucking idiot but I didn't know he was that stupid. I can't believe he had the audacity to ask me to date him just so he can become Delta. Over my dead fucking body, I'd rather cut my own tongue off and eat it." Kane shivered in disgust and checked his watch, his mood souring when he looked at the time. He was late.

"Of fucking course that idiot had to drag me off somewhere and make me late! They're gonna have my fucking head now." Kane speed-walked down the hallway trying not to draw attention to himself seeing as he wasn't the only person in the building, especially on a busy weekend afternoon. He reached the door to the Alpha's office, quickly glancing around to make sure no one saw him and entered.

The Alpha's office was seemingly empty, with no one, not even the Alpha himself being there. Kane turned his phone off and walked towards the bookshelf near the big, mahogany desk in the center of the room and pulled out what appeared to be a random book. A scanner popped out from behind the space where the book was and scanned Kane's retina. Once the scan was approved Kane let go of the book and the shelf slid away to reveal a well-lit hallway, leading to a room at the end of it. Kane walked past the shelf, hearing it slide shut behind him as he reached the end of the corridor. Then scanned his hand only for the door leading to the briefing room to open.

The first thing he saw was the pack leader's glaring at him as Kane tried not to roll his eyes at them. It's not like it was his fault that he was late. Kane turned his attention to the front of the room where the hologram of a woman was standing. When she saw Kane she smiled at him, urging him to join them. Kane smiled at the woman, happy to see her after so long, even if it wasn't in person.

"Hello, Director Ansari. I'm so sorry that I'm late but it couldn't be helped." Kane almost wanted to kill Liam as he thought about how Liam had made him late by pulling him into the bathroom to have a useless conversation but he couldn't focus on that for now. He was addressing the head of the FBI, he didn't have the time nor energy to think of such an irrelevant person. He had more important things to worry about.

Director Ansari's smile widened as she looked at Kane, even though it didn't fully reach her eyes. He could tell that whatever was happening in the capital was taking a toll on her spirit. Kane knew that he would be willing to do anything to help.

"I understand Kane, do not worry yourself. Come, sit down." Kane nodded and walked over to his designated spot, the first seat on the left side of the table, closest to the director. He knew that she wasn't just talking about being late, he could tell by her expression that she had noticed how worried he looked, and was trying to advise him against worrying about her too much.

Director Ansari scanned the room, meeting eyes with everyone to see who fidgeted under her gaze.

"We are all aware that what is discussed cannot leave this room, right?"

Kane nodded along with the other people in the room, realizing how dire the situation truly was the longer they stared at the Director's grave face.

"Okay then, we can begin." The Director waved a hand and a detailed 3D map of the capital appeared along with the X's on certain spots across the table that spanned the room. Kane's eyes narrowed when he recognized that the marked spots on the map were secret bases of The Hunters. Director Ansari looked at Kane's intrigued face and started to speak.

"You recognize that these bases belong to the Hunters right?" Kane nodded, wondering why so many of them were marked.

"The X's on this map are all of the bases that we've discovered and searched in the past few days. And so far these searches have been fruitless."

"Well, what have you been looking for?" The Alpha tentatively asked as the Director stared at the holographic map with a hard, cold glare. The Director looked up at the Alpha and glanced around the room as if she was testing them with her gaze. Everyone except Kane flinched under her stare, becoming increasingly uncomfortable the longer her eyes were on them.

It's not what we've been looking for. It's who." Director Ansari folded her hands and sighed, the stress permeating through her calm demeanor.

Kane sat up in his chair, suddenly realizing that this mission was dealing with a missing person. Which means that it would have to be time sensitive. He could tell by the way that the Director pursed her lips and squared her shoulders that this wasn't just some regular person in danger, this was serious.

"Who is missing?" The room became pin-drop silent the moment Kane asked the question.

"Councilman Hussein's daughters."

The Beta and Delta raised their eyebrows, trying to contain their expressions of shock.

"Have you alerted the national guard? They could be anywhere by now." The Director nodded at the Beta and gestured to the edges of map that were the boarders of the capital.

"As you know we've issued a lockdown, no one is allowed to go in and out of the capital. And we sealed it with a magical barrier the moment we found out that they were missing. The national guards were alerted at the same time. You would have to assume that we're incompetent to think otherwise." Director Ansari gave a kurt glance at the Beta that quickly made him close his mouth and stay silent, choosing not to say whatever he was going to say next.

Kane glanced at the other pack leaders who nodded in agreement, intently listening to the Director, not the slightest bit fazed by the mention of a lockdown. So they knew before just before this meeting that there was a lockdown in the capital? Kane's annoyance continued to grow as he realized that they didn't tell him another piece of important information. Why do they keep doing this?

"Did you find any leads when you searched the other bases?" The Delta looked at the Director, who shook her head gravely.

"That's exactly why we need you Kane. You know more about the different bases in the capital. You could help us find the daughters before it's too late."

Kane nodded his head, he had already agreed to it the moment that he was told that the daughters were missing. He would do whatever it takes.

"Of course I will. When do I leave?"

"It would be best if Kane leaves tomorrow, we wouldn't want people to be suspicious. We could stage Kane being sick at school and then he could just say he's staying at home." Kane glanced at the Alpha, surprised that he could come up with such a good idea with that pea-brain of his.

"I agree, we want to draw the least amount of attention towards Kane as possible. We can't have anyone suspecting anything." The Delta spoke up again, urging the Director to agree with them.

Before Kane would've thought that this wasn't completely necessary, the only who would've noticed his appearance was Nia and he plans on telling her that he's leaving. But now he had both Liam and his friends to worry about, he knew Liam wasn't going to give up on trying to convince Kane, all because his stupid fucking Delta position that is on the line. God, Liam is such a piece of shit. Now everything was becoming even more inconvenient than usual.

"Yes, that would be the best course of action. Now that we've agreed we need to discuss the logistics." The Director pinched the holographic map and zoomed in on a certain area in the capital, showing them the last place that the Councilman's daughters were seen before they went missing.

Kane shook his head, clearing his mind of the problems he had to deal with. This isn't the time to focus on himself, his main goal from this moment on would be saving the daughters no matter what, nothing else.

Sam

"I can't believe it. Are you sure that Kane and Liam are soulmates?" Hyejin was sitting on Sam's bed as she watched her boyfriend pace back and forth.

"Yes. I'm one-hundred percent sure. Liam said it himself last night. I listened to you and followed Kane like you said and he ended up running into Liam."

"The same Liam that we sent off when twelve-midnight hit to go look for his soulmate?" Hyejin raised an eyebrow, partly just trying to indulge her mate who looked like he was loosing his mind. While Sam couldn't wrap his head around it, Hyejin wasn't that surprised.

For some weird reason them being together made sense to her.

"I still can't believe it, Kane was pissed off though. Liam was too but that was expected, Kane was more angry than Liam was." In Sam's mind, Kane was a completely different person yesterday from how he usually is. He was so used to seeing Kane, as someone who is quiet and prefers to go unnoticed. Sure, Kane sometimes tries to stand up for himself but his demeanor and personality had done a complete 180 from what Sam usually sees. Not to mention how with the way Kane slapped Liam in the hallway, Sam couldn't help but feel intrigued.

It was in his nature anyway, to question it. He was a vampire. Vampires are naturally inquisitive most of the time.

Hyejin studied Sam, who had stopped pacing, to stare in silence as he got lost in his thoughts. Usually it was the other way around, with Hyejin getting lost in her thoughts and Sam having to gently reintroduce her to the real world again.

"Sam? Are you okay? You're kinda spacing out here." Sam immediately snapped out of his thoughts, trying to cover up what he was thinking about.

"I'm fine Hyejin. I just can't believe that Kane and Liam are soulmates."

Hyejin knew he wasn't lying, but it also seemed like he was keeping something from her. She could feel it through the bond. But she knew that he would tell her eventually so she decided to let it go.

And besides, she was keeping stuff from him too. She couldn't tell him about what happened in the archives last night at the party. Nia had almost died, and it turns out that Nia has magical powers too. Hyejin could feel that this situation was only going to get more intricate, so she wanted to observe it a bit more before she decided to get fully involved.

"Do you think Liam is going to tell us that Kane is his soulmate?" Sam shrugged and sat down next to Hyejin as she quietly asked him the question.

"I don't know, I doubt it though, Liam and the others tend to leave us out when it comes to a lot of things. That's how it's always been." Sam sighed and rested his head on Hyejin's lap.

She bit her lip and shook her head at Sam's pessimism. "I think he'll tell us. They leave us out of a lot of things but I don't think they'll leave us out on something this important. We're his friends too, don't forget that."

Sam laughed, still in awe about how his soulmate can see the best in everything. He's known her for years and he still thinks it's a superpower. "Yeah, you're probably right." He sat up, staring at Hyejin with a sudden intensity that signified something... interesting.

Hyejin playfully slapped Sam's arm as she felt a wave of arousal through the soul-bond. "Sam!" He laughed, his fangs showing as he flashed her a devious smile. "I can't help it. You just look so... good." Sam ran a hand through her hair, stopping his hand at the nape of her neck.

"Really, you think I look good?" Hyejin asked Sam, brushing her lips against his as she spoke.  Sam smiled against her lips, thoroughly enjoying her teasing.

"I think you look, amazing, actually."

Hyejin grabbed him by shirt and straddled his lap, immediately pressing her lips to his. Sam eagerly responded, placing his hands on her hips, intending on going lower until her cellphone started ringing.

"Fucking hell." Sam cursed as she reached into her pocket and answered the phone, giggling at Sam's reaction.

"Liam, what's up?"

"Hey, nothing much! Are you busy right now?"

Before she could answer Sam grabbed the phone, determined to end the conversation. "Yes, she is very busy right now. And if I get my way she will be busy for the next few hours too."

There was immediate laughter after that could've only belonged Liam, Enesta and Thomas in the background once they heard Sam on the phone, sounding irritated because they obviously interrupted something.

Sam heard someone grabbing the phone from Liam, only for him to hear Enesta on the line now, laughing. "Sorry Sam, but it's important. You and Jin need to get your asses over to the pack house right now."

Sam scoffed as Enesta tried to order him around. "I'm good actually, I'm really comfortable where I am now." Hyejin rolled her eyes and snatched the phone back from her stubborn soulmate, who refused to move.

"Ignore Sam, he's throwing a tantrum right now. We'll be there." She laughed and ended the call, shoving the phone back in her pocket. She got up off of Sam and held out her hand to pull him up.

"Come on now you big baby. If they say it's important then it must be important." Sam huffed and accepted her hand, throwing his arm over her shoulder as they went to go meet their friends.

Liam

"That was hilarious." Liam threw his phone down on the couch as he threw his head back to laugh.

"He sounded so upset on the phone." Enesta snickered next to Liam while Thomas sat across from them rolling his eyes, but not without a smile on his face.

"You guys are so immature." Thomas said to them with a smile on his face as he scrolled through his phone, staring at the screen intently.

"Come on, Thomas. You thought it was funny too, and besides, after what happened today with Kane and my parents I needed a good laugh."

"What? You're mad because Kane put you in your place again?" Enesta raised an eyebrow at Liam who in turn folded his arms together and grumbled. "He didn't put me in my place. He just insulted me."

"Nah, he did more than that. He fucking ruined your ego, twice in less than twenty-four hours." Enesta laughed when Liam rolled his eyes at her, not wanting to be reminded about how he had been rejected by Kane Zaveri, of all people, twice. It was so embarrassing.

"He murdered it, actually. What did Kane say again Liam? That he must have been Hitler in a past life to be mated to you? Can you believe it? He's hilarious." Thomas ducked when Liam threw a pillow at him, trying to get him to shut up while Enesta laughed even harder.

"I still can't believe he had the audacity to say that to me. What happened to the old Kane that couldn't even look me in the eye?"

"Eh, I'm pretty your consistent harassment and bullying of Kane is the reason you're in this situation in the first place so you might want to rethink about whether or not you want that Kane to come back." Liam sighed, not wanting to admit that Thomas was right. But it really wasn't Liam's fault, Kane just has a very punchable face. He makes it too easy.

"Instead of complaining about how much you hate Kane you should be trying to get in his good graces. Don't you wanna end up like Sam and Hyejin? All over each other and tangled up in the sheets?" Enesta tilted her head, as she sobered up, trying to gauge how much Liam had become attracted to Kane since yesterday night.

Liam's nose wrinkled in mild confusion as he thought of being with Kane in that way. Before he definitely would've vomited at the thought but now it almost seems... acceptable or pleasurable, even. He thought back to the kiss that had gotten him slapped in the face and he vehemently fought the urge to blush, his face reddening in spite of himself.

"See! I knew it! You're definitely attracted to Kane at this point. Hell, you were most likely attracted to him before if we're being honest." Enesta gestured to Liam's red face as Thomas gave Liam a knowing smile.

Liam frowned and covered his face, indignant. "I didn't even say anything!"

Thomas's smile widened and he laughed. "You didn't have to, your facial expression said enough for you."

Liam opened his mouth to protest when they heard a knock at the door. Before they could open it the door burst open to see Sam coming into the room holding Hyejin's hand.

"Whatever you have to tell us better be interesting! Because we were in the middle of a very important... conversation." Sam trailed off at the last part of his sentence to smirk, resulting in him getting a admonishing pinch from Hyejin making them all laugh.

"It's super important guys. Like, I've been panicking since yesterday because of what happened." Sam and Hyejin glanced at each other and then sat down, Sam next to Thomas and Hyejin next to Liam.

"Okay, fill Sam and I in on what's going on. What happened?"

Liam leaned back in his chair and sighed.

"I found my soulmate last night." Sam gave Hyejin a surprised look, not expecting Liam to tell them this soon. All while she just smiled and gave him the universal 'I told you so look'.

"We know."

"Yeah well-" Liam did a double-take at what Hyejin just said, partly not believing it.

"Wait a minute, how do you know? Is this one of those feelingly things you get or something?" Enesta asked as Thomas looked at Hyejin confused as to how she would know this. But she just laughed and shook her head. "No, no, nothing like that. Sam told me."

They all looked at Sam who rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, "Yeah, I told her."

"How did you know though?" Thomas furrowed his brow, confused as to how all this new information was coming about.

"I accidentally ended up eavesdropping on you and Kane for bit, but don't worry I left as soon as you tried to kiss him." Liam facepalmed, even more embarrassed than he was before.

"Wait a minute! You kissed Kane? Sam you didn't mention that!" Hyejin sat back in awe as she stared at Liam, who had decided to cover his face with his hands.

"It was a moment of weakness." Liam mumbled.

"Yup, a moment of weakness that got him slapped." Thomas immediately put his two cents in, thoroughly enjoying it when Sam started laughing and Hyejin covered her mouth in shock as Enesta high-fived him.

"Oh my God! So that was the sound I heard after I walked away. Damn, I did not realize Kane was that strong."

"Neither did Liam apparently." Enesta cracked another joked that sent everyone but Liam in a fit of giggles.

"Ha ha, very funny. But seriously guys, what am I supposed to do now?" Liam looked up from his hands, becoming increasingly distressed the more he thought about how him and Kane were soulmates. They all stopped laughing when they saw the expression on Liam's face. It was silent for a few moments before Thomas spoke up, deciding to give him advice first.

"The reason your relationship is like this is because of how you treated Kane in the past. He has no reason, to like you or trust you. Rejecting him would be the easy way out and it's too late now because you told your parents that you have a soulmate. You should at least try, and besides, the Moon Goddess doesn't make mistakes." Thomas gestured to Sam and Hyejin who smiled at Liam, to give him some sort of encouragement.

"But he's a human."

"At least try, Liam. You might regret it if you don't." Enesta patted him on the back as she tried to drill it through his head that these soulbonds are worth the effort.

"Okay, fine. Maybe I'll try, a little bit."

Sam nodded as Hyejin high-fived him. "See that's a start."

"Yeah, it's a start..."

End.
