The Early Bird

The moon watches over me

Singing lullabies, in hope that sleep will keep me from dreaming up lies

But my eyes are the first to open

My heart

The only one beating at the same rhythm as night

I can't ignore this pull

So I lasso the sun

Stretch out my wings

And up rises another day

Of spinning the world again.

On a tilted axis

The magnetic north tells me which way I should fly

And which way is home, though the latter I barely know

There's no time to waste

Make haste

Weave threads of gold and fix the cracks

Brave the rain, pluck worms from grass before it's too late

I feel alive

Doing my part to fill the void

Nevermind the time it takes

It takes too long to wait and stand by.

There's a forgotten song

Where the wind blows, I hear it being sung

Of joy, play and the littlest things, but

Notes don't pick me up, lift me above what hasn't been done

To the sun

Is the only direction I know

I take flight by second nature

Dip my beak in grease and oil

And soar above the slumbering earth

For there's no rest

When work has yet to take a break.

Though on late nights

When time seems to pause

And everything stops

I'll crane my neck to the sky

And take the time to count the stars

Before drifting off

Trusting the tide to bring me back.

And when it does

The shore is happy to let me rest on its lap

And again

And again

I'm suspended in time

Between the ground and the sky

At half-light

My mind is awake

But barely, and just enough that

I don't mind when the clouds vanish out of sight

Not when I'm toiling away

But at rest:

A rarity pure as gold.

In the movie Your Name, half-light is the time of day where time itself doesn't strictly flow in a linear line. This means that the past, present and future are able to meet, if only briefly, at this time of day.
