Path to the Sky
From darkness, I create the light
And breathe white fire
Across the midnight sky
Give life to the lanterns known as stars
Not for the world, but for myself
To gaze into the coming days
With a vision for my next aim.
Negative space--
Not long ago, it was the only home
I knew, and
I thought
I was one of the few
Who had to learn to build
Brick by brick, from my heart to the moon and beyond
But at the end of dawn
Like anything, it's an art
That takes a certain drive
To form beauty out of disgrace.
In doing so
I refuse to bow
Down
To the rest of earth
That's light years behind, where
People from another time
Try to understand why
I live
For defying my own limits
When for most, keeping just within the
Grasp
Of satisfaction is enough.
But I'm never satisfied
By the outside words that claim
I should be grateful for the times
The stars have aligned in my favour
As if it was the universe, and not I
Who spun every thread of the dress I wear,
With bare hands
A cup of luck
And the rest from the beating of my heart.
So let me say
That our eyes are different
You may be drawn
To those who seek recognition; the definition
Of targets for your contempt
But inside
This
Is the way I heal
By measuring the distance between today and tomorrow
What I have, what I want and what I
Need to feel complete
So one day
When I find the path that reaches the sky
I can sleep among the stars
And gaze upon the glittering lights;
One spark for every dream I've given life.
Surprisingly I struggled with getting the voice right in this poem. It took me a while to find the right metaphors too. It's not my best but I think this poem does define a good chunk of myself.
Anyway, so far this collection has the running themes of trees, stages and stars. I might have to change the title of this collection if this trend continues...
