Chasing the Sun

Run

It's that feeling you get, when you wanna say "I'm done" but the chase never seems to end

Instinct pushes you through the race

And cross the finish line before you fall flat on your face even though the gun hasn't blown

Just yet.

When they asked what I wanted to be

I said, I wanna be the wind

That traveled the world, surfing the sea

The sun behind me as a friend

Til it's nighttime, and I can rest

Have time to count the stars in my head.

Because gosh, how useless I feel when I'm still

Waiting

For the sign, for countless times, to tell me, "Here is where you need to go."

Sometimes that means that life isn't fair

Sometimes there's no map for the lost, and those that have lost

But you're not a lost cause

For no one should feel any shame for being afraid of the dark.

It takes time

To summon what some would call

Courage

Or bravery

But I call it stubbornness

To turn and face the world.

But you know what?

Look at you, sweat dripping, each breath like a gasping wheeze, head over knees

But you're alive.

You've shown that you have the drive to get up every time

You've survived what life has thrown at you

The hot days and the cold, cold nights

And through those weeks and months and years, you've learned to hunt and keep your fire burning.

So here's what I'm gonna ask:

Take what you've learned

And start to build your own path, one hardship at a time.

We can turn lemons into lemonade

Turn red capes into friendships made

Turn sadness into art

Turn 'stop' into start

So why not turn the tables?

Let's stand our ground.

It'll be hard

More so for some than others

Because while some are made of rock and stone, others' bones are carved from wind and water

But these differences will help each other win the game we call life

Lead each other out of those dark places and into the light

Because together, we can chase our dreams

Conquer our demons

And run towards the rising sun.

This was my very first spoken word, written two years ago. I've come back and edited it but I didn't want to change too much out of sentimentality.

Oh, and if you missed it, yesterday I published another poem called "Without Masters." I don't think you guys got the notification thanks to a Wattpad glitch.
