2: Leaving the hospital

Kin's POV

So here I am, packing my things in my office to get ready to travel to Konoha. I was born there, so this is kind of like a trip back home. My mother Umi moved to the Cloud Village to treat the kids, but after catching another disease, she died shortly afterwards. So basically, I'm going back home to my father who I haven't seen since I was seven.

"Hey Femia?" I called one of my assistants.

"Yes?"

"I have some stuff for your to do....." I said, rummaging around my desk. "Please make sure everything is running smoothly, okay? Make sure everyone has plenty of water, an extra pinch of salt for those who have diarrhea. Don't forget to feed the babies non-formula milk, and don't forget to do laundry constantly."

"But.....what if I mess up? What if I freeze up again? What if--"

"Oh, for the love of medicine, shut up," I sighed. "You are a great doctor, and I know it. If you mess up, that shows you are learning. Let's just hope nothing fatal happens. If you freeze up, you need to appoint someone to give you a good slapping. As for the rest of the 'what if's, just understand that I went through the exact same thing." I looked at her in the eye.

"Do your best and keep everyone, including yourself, alive. I don't want to come back to a hospital full of dead nurses, doctors, surgeons, and physicians lying around my clean floors," I said, waving her off.

"Thank you, Doctor Hatake! I won't let you down!"

"Yeah, yeah," I said, turning back to my bag.

"Doctor Hatake?" Ai called, stepping into my office. I twisted my head back to look at him.

"Yes?"

"These ninjas will be responsible for getting you to Konoha safely," he explained, stepping aside to show several Konoha ANBU. I recognized them by their uniforms and tattoos.

"I see. I'll be in your care then," I said, giving them a polite bow.

"Understood," a ninja, presumably the ANBU captain saluted.

Suddenly, the door of my office slammed open.

"Doctor Hatake!" One of the nurses called to me frantically. "It's baby Momie!"

"What's wrong?" I asked him, my brows creasing into a frown.

"She's not breathing! I tried to revive her, but--!" He couldn't continue, and I could instantly tell he was completely traumatized by the sudden turn of events.

Eyes wide with terror and fear, I ran to over the Baby Unit, ignoring the other crying babies and physicians. I went to check the baby in the cradle labeled "Momie." However, as soon as I touched the child, I flinched at cold skin I had made contact with.

The baby was dead.

And she was brought in just yesterday. No wonder the nurse was so scared.

My eye slowly shut, realization hitting me like a stone wall.

"I'm sorry, Baby Momei," I whispered, picking up the dead child. "I couldn't save you."

"Doctor Hatake," another doctor whispered, wiping away tears. I solemnly handed the dead baby to the doctor and inhaled and exhaled deeply.

I turned to the nurses and doctors under my authority. "Do whatever it takes to keep these kids alive," I said firmly. "I don't care what. Just keep these kids alive before I come back. Report to me daily in Konoha who are alive, and who are not. Meanwhile, I will, be working in Konoha for a cure for every last one of those kids. So please....." I got down on my knees and put my head to the floor in an act of respect for my subordinates. "Please keep the kids alive."

"Yes ma'am!"

I gave a tired smile and went back to my office. I grabbed my essentials and went to the ANBU waiting outside the hospital. "I'm ready."

"Let's go!"
