Collapsed- Exhaustion

Amelia's POV

     I've been extremely sore lately, which I believe is due to working so many extended shifts (12 hours or longer) these past couple of weeks. I'm exhausted but I'm trying to hang in there because I'm finally getting a day off tomorrow. Luckily, Kai is visiting the hospital for research for an upcoming clinical trial in Minnesota so having them here is a motivator to keep on going. I'm trying to keep my balance heading to the elevator when I feel my legs begin to wobble, my balance becoming unstable. The room is spinning and I collapse onto the floor. The last thing I see before going unconscious is Teddy running over to me. 

Fifteen Minutes Later...

  I'm laying in an empty patient room and Teddy is standing over me, monitoring my vitals. As I slowly wake up and squint at the bright light in the room, Teddy gives me a look of concern. "Hey Amelia, how are you feeling? You took quite a fall back there. You're lucky that you landed in the position that you did and that you didn't hit your head. I do recommend that we do a head CT just to be on the side of caution. Is that okay with you?" I feel woozy but I manage a nod. Teddy gives me a few minutes to wake up before taking me for the head CT.

     I stay quiet during the head CT because I have a headache and feel nauseous. If I speak right now, I will probably vomit all over myself, which would be gross. The CT results come back instantly. Teddy gives a sigh of relief. "No head or neurological damage has occurred to you Amelia. You simply collapsed from exhaustion, which isn't a good thing either, but it's definitely a lot better than the hypothetical more severe outcome you could have faced." I nod in agreement and lay in quiet as Teddy wheels me back to my room. It's only when I see Kai waiting for me that tears form in my eyes and I let out my emotions. I let out a series of sobs, including some vomit... in which Teddy holds a bed pan under me to help prevent my vomit from going all over the place. 

    Kai rubs my back in gentle circles and whispers soothing words into my ears. They do not say a word until I'm finished throwing up and Teddy politely excuses herself from the room. Kai looks at me with A LOT of concern. "I love you and your work ethic Amelia, I truly do, but you and I both know that you're taking your day off a bit early. Teddy was telling me that you collapsed from exhaustion. You haven't done that in awhile, which really worries me. I'm off tomorrow too and I want us to spend tomorrow lying around in bed, doing absolutely nothing but watching movies and sleeping. Can you promise me that we'll both be doing just that tomorrow?" Their voice begins to crack. "P-Please?" 

      My heart sinks at seeing Kai so upset, but I nod. "I-I promise Kai. I have to stay here for a few hours for observation purposes, but once I'm cleared to leave, I'm all yours." They kiss me gently on the forehead. "I'm all yours now Amelia, you get some rest in the meantime and I'll let you when Teddy or anyone else comes by to discharge you. I love you and hope that you have sweet dreams. You deserve to have some sweet dreams rather than a series of nightmares. I'm here if you need me." I manage to crack a small smile as I close my eyes and fall asleep within five minutes. Kai Bartley is indeed my safe space and I'm beyond grateful to have them in my life, especially as my significant other.
