Twenty-Six

"What did he do? Is he in trouble?" I asked Yvonne who just stood there looking at me. Ash was knocked out on one of the benches.

"No trouble just insanely drunk and he might be on something. I confiscated whatever substance I found in his pockets"

"He's...using again?" I exclaimed in disbelief, turning to Yvonne who just shrugged at me uselessly.

"Maybe, maybe not. I don't know. All I know is you should be glad it was me who called you and not the hospital. He was planning on driving in that state" she explains.

"Well, thank you but I don't think I should be here. We've broken up" I inform her, turning my back on the cell and on Ash.

"Wait, you two are not together?" She gasps before laughing lightly. "Well that's breaking news."

I roll my eyes at her. She clearly hasn't changed much.

"I'm leaving" I say to her, walking away.

"Wait" she calls out, pulling me back by the jacket. "You gotta take him with you. You can't just leave him here"

"Look at him! He's knocked out. Even if I wanted to take him, how would I?"  I reply, gesturing at Ash.

"Leave that to me. Just tell me where you live" she says with a smirk before unlocking the cell.

My mother would throw a fit if she saw the scene unfolding right now. Two police officers under the instruction of Yvonne were carrying Ash up the stairs to my apartment.

"Once he's sobered up I'm sending him off. We aren't exactly on excellent terms and he knows it damn well" I huff in annoyance, telling Yvonne.

"Ouch, was the break up that bad?" She asks me, laughing.

"I think we're all good here. You can leave now, thank you" I gave her a fake smile before making my way upstairs. After today I didn't want to be around her any second longer.

I shut and locked the door after the officers left. Ashton was lying on the couch. I put the kettle on to make me some tea before pulling out my books and laptop to finally get some work done.

The hours passed by pretty quickly and by ten pm I was feeling sleepy. I decided to end my study session and get ready for bed. I had an early start tomorrow, anyway. I walked over to draw the living room curtains shut. I switched off the table-side lamps but decided to leave the kitchen light on incase Ashton woke up in the middle of the night. I wouldn't want him knocking things over in the dark.

As I lay in bed my mind drifted back to my living room.

What was he thinking?

When did he get back?

Is this drinking habit back again?

I shut out all those nagging thoughts and decided on going to sleep. All I know is I'm gonna be out of here first thing in the morning so I don't have to deal with him. Yeah I let him stay but it doesn't change anything about our situation. Well, to me it doesn't.

**

It was six-thirty AM and I was already up and about with my usual morning routine. I decided on grabbing breakfast at some café, just to avoid being here when Ashton wakes up, if he isn't already awake.

With my sneakers in my hand, I padded across the living room to make my way out the door. I could hear his faint snores. Guess he was still asleep. I turned and gave him one last glance before stepping out. He was now lying on the floor.

I texted Dani and asked her to meet me around the corner for breakfast. She instantly replied, saying she was on her way now from the gym. I can't believe this girl and the amount of dedication she had towards her physical health. I just know I could never.

My head was full of thoughts but they were all about one person. The person I hoped would be gone by the time I got home. I thought about hiding out across the street all day just to watch him leave but that's just crazy.

The café was a block away from the apartment and I got there first. I made my way inside and ordered breakfast for both Dani and I. The aroma of the place filled up my lungs. The smell of fresh coffee in the morning. I love it. Let's not forget the sweet smell of freshly baked pastries that were being served.

I settled for the table by the window and waited patiently for my best friend. After about ten minutes the waitress was bringing over my order just as Dani was entering the door.

"Perfect timing" I greet her as she drops her gym bag on the floor before sitting down.

"Smells so good. I'm starving!" Dani says, rubbing her hands together excitedly.

"How was gym?" I asked her, biting into my blueberry muffin. It tasted divine.

"It was alright" she simply puts it, already halfway through her croissant.

"How are things with you and West?" I asked, sipping my coffee. I watched as she continued eating, shrugging her shoulders and rolling her eyes. She finally responded when she managed to swallow everything in her mouth.

"We're okay. I went to gym early to get away from his awful snoring but we're okay" she smiles before slumping into her chair.

"Are you regretting moving in with him?" I asked lowly, not sure if it was a good question or not.

"Oh absolutely. And the thing is, I wanna tell him how I feel so bad but I don't want him to think I don't wanna be with him or something. It's stressing me out. Maybe that's why I feel so great at the gym where I can take out all my frustrations in the boxing ring or on a treadmill" she explains and it's the first time in a long time I've seen her this way.

"I'm sorry you're going through stuff. And I'm not the one who should be giving any advice to anyone but if you're gonna ask me about what I think? I think that it's you that knows him the best and how to talk or atleast explain things to him. Just pick a good time and please do it face to face" I tell her and she nods.

"Yep, guess I'll have to man up about it. I just don't want to hurt his feelings, you know? But I'll text him later and see if we can have a quiet night tonight so I can talk about it with him" she says to me with a slight smile.

"Good. And keep me updated, okay? I'm always available to talk or text. My life is as dull as Mondays" I say to her, glancing outside the windows.

"Not so dull when you have me. Do you wanna go out ag---?"

"Nope. Never" I stopped her from finishing the one sentence I didn't want to hear anytime soon.

Dani bursts out laughing, earning a few weird looks from the rest of the crowd inside the shop. She didn't care though because she found it so hilarious.
