CHAPTER SIXTY FOUR

CHAPTER SIXTY FOUR
[64]
song: heaven angel by the driver era

"GEORGIA." Kai yelled out, interrupting the pleasant silence and startling Daisy so hard she could've had a heart attack.

She lifts her head up from leaning on the car window and turns to him slowly, with wide eyes. "You did that on purpose." She spoke angrily.

"Just making sure you're awake." Kai replied happily. His eyes find another broken down car on the road as he drove by, "Florida." He added. Daisy groaned and turned back to attempt to fall asleep. He glanced to her and then back to the road. "Don't get too comfortable. We're almost there."

"You've said that at least three times." Daisy sighs.

"Well, this time I mean it." Kai scoffed. "Texas!" He added excitedly as he pointed to another car they passed.

Daisy brought her hands to her face, rubbing her eyes as she spoke. "I'm going to kill you." She muttered.

"Aw, someone's grumpy." Kai frowned.

"Someone's grumpy." Daisy mocked, in a high pitch tone. "You know, there's only so many times we can listen to this fucking album." She says, finally leaning up to eject the tape that was in the car.

She grabbed it from the tape player and examined it. Kai grabbed it from her and put it back in the player, leading to Daisy plopping back in her seat with a huff. "Rebel Yell is easily the greatest album of all time." Kai said.

"I maybe would've agreed with you ten years ago, but considering this is all you choose to listen to it actually makes me want to scream." Daisy responded.

"Well, what do you want to listen to?" Kai asked annoyedly.

"Silence!" Daisy raised her voice, like it was obvious. "Silence, Kai."

All Kai could do was laugh at her response. "Not grumpy. Hangry." He corrected his comment from earlier.

"Maybe because someone didn't stop for food four hours ago." Daisy responded.

"Maybe you should've eaten before we left." Kai shrugged.

"Maybe you should've eaten before we left." Daisy mocked him again.

Kai let out a scoff, beginning to point to another car's license plate as they drove past it, but stopped when he saw the large sign welcoming them to the small Virginian town. "Welcome to Mystic Falls." He read aloud.

"What if these people aren't even here?" Daisy shrugged as they drove past the sign. "They could literally be anywhere and you're telling me they're still in this stupid old town?"

"Well, if they're not, we find something of theirs, do a locator spell, find wherever they moved to, and kill them there. Easy." He responded.

Daisy nodded in agreement, leaning back in her seat and letting herself relax. Her eyes trailed out the window and landed on another stray car. "Virginia." She said.

Kai shrugged a bit. "That doesn't count because we're in Virginia. The game is supposed to be naming the plates of states that we're not—"

"Kai!" Daisy frustratedly interrupted him.

Kai held in his laughter as he shook his head. "Yup. My bad."

The town was wealthy, you could tell by the massive estates that they passed before they entered the square. Huge, brick and marble homes sat on huge plots of lands, with big white pillars and huge windows. A place to start a family, presumably. The neighborhoods were lined with cute, smaller houses. Some with swing sets and pools in the backyards.

The center of town was full of small shops and restaurants, bars and government buildings. Just like any other town. But there was a certain charm here that brought a bit of comfort.

Kai and Daisy parked the car on the side of the street along some others, walking the rest of the way, wherever that was. "You know it might be more effective to go look for them instead of just sitting here." Daisy suggested, as she sat on the edge of a fountain at the center of town.

"We could. Or we could just wait until they need to go grocery shopping." Kai suggested, gesturing towards the grocery store across the square. Daisy looked at him confusedly. "There's only one grocery store here. The chances of them showing up here today are much higher than us wandering around an unfamiliar place looking for them." He shrugged. "Also, I'm lazy."

Daisy leaned back on her hands, lifting her face up towards the warm sun. "What if they find us here and sneak up and kill us first?" Daisy suggested with a half shrug.

"Well, one, they can't kill us, and two, I put a cloaking spell on us an hour ago." Kai began. "They can't see or hear us."

"Fancy." Daisy responded. "We could get lunch while—"

If on queue, the sound of other people talking fill both of their ears and they lean up quickly, both turning towards the direction the sound was coming from.

Daisy froze and held her breath. Although she knew she was cloaked it still felt like instinct. Kai however stood up immediately and slowly made their way towards the pair.

A girl and a guy, just like Tim said. They came around the corner and into the town square walking side by side, and talking. The guy was tall, with a dark head of hair that looked like a once-was mullet, and blue eyes that were so obnoxiously blue you could see them from down the street. He was probably only a few years older than Kai, You could tell by the way he held himself that he thought he was all that, too.

The girl beside him looked to be about Daisy's age, maybe a bit older. She had dark skin and hair cut to her chin, which suited her small face. She looked just as miserable being next to that guy as he did being next to her.

"I'm still not used to how different it looks around here." The girl spoke, crossing her arms as she glanced around the town. "It's like we're in a different dimension."

"News flash, Bon-Bon. We are." The man added cockily.

She rolled her eyes. "You know what I meant."

Daisy and Kai exchanged glances before Daisy eventually got up and joined Kai by his side as he watched. "Sneak attack." Kai says.

Daisy looked at him confusedly. "What?" She raised an eyebrow.

"Attack them while we're still cloaked." He shrugged. "It'll be funny."

"We came all this way to be funny? I thought we were gonna at least try and get some information from them first." Daisy says as she turned back to watch the two walk down the street.

"O-kay." Kai says. "So sneak attack, knock them out, tie them up, then pry them for information and then kill them."

Daisy glanced back to Kai, beginning to nod in agreement but stopped as the man and woman crossed the street towards the two. Freezing in place, Kai put a finger to his lip to hush them both just in case.

The man and woman looked right through them, like they weren't there— which to them, they weren't. Daisy glanced at the pair back and fourth quickly, waiting for Kai's queue that they were in the clear.

The pair spoke like they were friends, but not close. They bickered and argued in a way you would if you were stuck in a prison world with someone else, and they were the only person there. Daisy knew the feeling all too well.

As they got closer, Kai gently grabbed Daisy and pulled her out of the way of their walking path, knowing that if they touched either of them the cloaking spell would wear off.

As the man and woman walk right past Daisy and Kai, Kai could feel a strong presence of magic grow in his finger tips. Like a magnet being drawn to it's other half. He narrowed his eyebrows at them as they walked away, and before he even realized it, he had slowly lifted his hand out to touch their shoulders.

As his hand got closer to them, the warm feeling of magic drew closer and began to flood his system. Daisy quickly grabbed onto his arm and pulled him away before he could make contact.

"What are you doing?!" Daisy whispered, even though it wasn't needed.

"They have magic." Kai shrugged. "Both of them."

Daisy glanced at the pair as they continued their walk through the square before refocusing her attention back to Kai. "So do you?" Daisy responded.

Kai's eyes fell bored. "Oh, really? Thank you." He said sarcastically.

Daisy rolled her eyes before speaking. "No- I just mean it's not like it's the first time we've dealt with other people with magic here." She shrugged.

Kai rubbed his hands where the feeling still lingered. "That felt different, though. It wasn't witch's magic." He shook his head. "Or... it was? I don't know." He glanced at them and back to Daisy.

Daisy thought for a few moments before speaking again. "Maybe we should figure out what their deal is before we go and screw things up for ourselves." She suggested.

"Figure out what their deal is... with or without torture and the threat of death?" Kai asked with narrow eyes.

"Without, preferably. For now." Daisy shrugged. "They might tell us everything we need to know by just talking to each other." She said. Kai started to be on the same page as Daisy.

"So we follow them?" Kai questioned.

Daisy shrugged a bit as she started to do just that, Kai following shortly behind. "Shouldn't be unfamiliar territory for you."

Daisy and Kai followed the pair for a good while, having their own conversation about random things and inevitably continuing their license plate game as they passed abandoned cars on the street.

The kept close enough to the pair that they could hear what they conversed, but not much was said. They walked down the street in silence, turning the same corners and going the same direction without discussion. It was clear that this walk they went on might've been a daily thing, or maybe they were just headed back to wherever they were staying.

The pair came to a stop in front of a white house, with a big porch and backyard, a white picket fence to top it all off. They stepped onto the creaky stairs and plopped down on the porch swing with a sigh.

Kai and Daisy exchanged confused glances before they followed them up to the porch, avoiding touching anything that might alert their presence.

"I spent my entire childhood here." The girl scoffed as she looked around. "And it still feels so foreign."

The man shrugged as he leaned back in the porch swing. "It could be the fact that she burnt this place to the ground two years ago." He responded sarcastically.

"I'm getting a little sick of the snarky comments, Damon." The girl shook her head. "This is weird. Being here is weird. There's no point in ignoring that."

Kai turned to Daisy. "Damon." He raised his eyebrows, insinuating that they'd gathered their first piece of information.

"Sure there is." Damon let's out a sigh.

The girl turned to look at him with raised eyebrows. "And what's that?" She asks.

"If I ignore it, it's not really happening." He smiles proudly.

The girl returns the fake smile, "How's that working out for you?" She asks with narrow eyes.

"Not well." Damon responds.

"Well, I have good news." The girl begins, leaning up a bit and taking the conversation in a happier direction.

"You got your magic back and figured a way out?" Damon spoke, in an almost sarcastic tone that Daisy couldn't read.

"Get your magic back?" Daisy narrowed her eyebrows at them before turning to Kai. "You can lose your magic?"

He shrugged. "Apparently."

"That makes things a little difficult, doesn't it?" Daisy sighs.

"But I felt magic..." Kai spoke confusedly. "Unless it wasn't hers?"

The girl made an awkward face. "So it's not that good, but— I did find a copy of National Lampoon's Vacation at my house. I thought maybe we could have another movie night tonight? Make popcorn and drink until we black out?" She suggested, as she awaited a response she realized half of her plan didn't work. "Or— I black out?" She corrected with a scoff.

Damon nods. "I like your thinking." He points at her.

The girl laughs. "It's not fair." She shakes her head. "Why don't witches get alcohol tolerance like vampires do?" She scoffs. "I would be so much more willing to drink if I didn't get so hungover the next day."

"She's joking, right?" Daisy turns to Kai with wide eyes as he continued focusing on the pair. "She didn't just say what I think she said, right?" She scoffed.

"You can say it, Bonnie." Damon says. "You wish you were me." He shrugs cockily.

Bonnie. The name fit her.

She laughed. "Definitely not."

Damon laughed a long with her for a few seconds before it died down. "Let's head back home. I was gonna go through my old record collection today." Damon said. "I think I have an Elvis album that will go for thousands in the real world." He says as he stands up.

"Ah, can't forget that." Bonnie responds with a smile as she rises from the porch swing and follows Damon back down the steps.

Daisy slowly turns to Kai with concerned eyes. "Hello?" She waves a hand in front of Kai's face as he had yet to take his eyes off the pair as they walked back down the street. "Helloooo?" She repeated and Kai eventually returned his focus back to her. She raised her eyebrows and widened her eyes, awaiting a comment. "Are we just gonna ignore that?" She questioned.

"Ignore what?" Kai asked.

She looked at him frustratedly. "She called him a vampire." Daisy says.

"Oh, yeah." Kai says, beginning to follow them back down the street.

Daisy lingered in the front yard of the white house for a few moments before turning to follow Kai, a confused look on her face. "Oh, yeah?" She questioned.

"They're harmless." He shrugged. "Sometimes. Rarely."

"Wait wait wait." Daisy shook her head as she caught up with him. "You knew?!"

He looked at her confusedly. "Knew what?"

She widened her eyes again in frustration. "You knew vampires were real and didn't tell me?!"

"I thought you knew." Kai shrugged innocently.

Daisy once again shook her head in frustration. "Kai, why the hell would I know that?!" She flailed her arms out. She glanced at Damon as he walked ahead, alongside Bonnie. "Hooollyyy shit." She let out a little scoff, amazed. "Do they really drink blood?"

Kai looked at her like it was all information she should've known by now. "Yes?"

"Well, why isn't he burning in the sun right now? Don't they do that? They do that in the movies—" Daisy questioned.

"They wear magical jewelry that protects them." Kai responds. Daisy let's out a chuckle and Kai turns to her. "I'm serious."

"Oh." Daisy's smile fell, and she refocused her gaze on the two walking ahead of them. "So he's a vampire, and she's a witch who lost her magic?" She raised an eyebrow.

Both Kai and Daisy came to a halt when they saw Bonnie stop walking and gesture to the house they were all stopped out in front of. "I'm gonna grab the movie and a few other things of mine, I'll meet you at your house?" She suggested.

Damon nodded, and he continued his walk home while Bonnie went inside. Kai and Daisy lingered on the sidewalk for a few moments. "They all must've lived here before." Kai says as he looked around.

Daisy watched Bonnie gather a box of things from the living room window, piling a few old toys and pictures together. She felt herself beginning to smile at the sight of Bonnie getting excited at finding more of her childhood things.

A part of her wished that she could return to her home and do the same things, but everything was gone. Burnt to a crisp and never to be seen again. She knew it was for the best, as returning to Wayward would be something she wouldn't really be able to handle, but she still found herself missing it sometimes.

"Daisy." Kai says.

She quickly snapped her head towards him as he spoke, his back to her as he stood in front of the mailbox by the driveway. She walked over to him. "Hm?" She questioned.

His gaze was focused ahead, and she followed his gaze to the hand painted mailbox that sat out front. "Wh—" she began, but she cut herself off as she read the words painted delicately in white.

"Bennett." Kai reads aloud. Daisy slowly lifts his head up to him and he looks at her with knowing eyes.

"Bennett..." Daisy repeats, her mind racing with possibilities. "Like... Bennett as in the Bennett witch that can do the spell we need to get out of there?" She swallowed hard, in complete disbelief.

Kai hadn't taken his eyes off Daisy, in too much denial to even begin to believe the odds were truly in their favor. He spoke anyways. "Exactly."
