CHAPTER FORTY THREE
CHAPTER FORTY THREE
[43]
song: super freak by rick james
DAISY KNEW IT WAS COMING. The loud pounding on the locked door of her Manhattan penthouse. She noted that he at least knocked. He must have not been here very long to realize that in the afterlife, you can kind of just do whatever the hell you want. Which was definitely not comforting, now that she was no longer alone here.
She frantically glanced around the penthouse, where she'd been living for the past couple weeks, looking for something she could defend herself with if need be.
"Daisy, I can hear the music." Kai yells, over the loud music Daisy had playing over the speakers in her living room.
She chuckles to herself as she picked up the kitchen knife from one of the drawers, dancing over to the door. "Whooo is ittt?" She says, in a sing-song voice.
"It's Kaiii." Kai says in a sing-song voice, mocking her.
The three shots of vodka she'd downed as soon as she got here were definitely not working in her favor. She inhaled sharply before swinging the door open, knife in hand.
Kai glances at the knife, then back up to her. He doesn't say anything for a second, just tries to read what she was thinking through her expression. She had a bright, proud smile on her face as she held the kitchen knife out in front of her, definitely not in a threatening way— almost like she was joking. "Can I come in?" He raises an eyebrow.
Daisy thinks for a second, making over dramatic facial expressions as she did. "Sure." She says with a quick shrug, opening the door wider.
Kai was extremely confused. This was definitely not the Daisy he remembered, but it's also been almost five years. He walks inside hesitantly, but he felt a side of himself enjoying this weird interaction.
The penthouse was huge, with massive windows that lined every wall and had a perfect view of New York at night. Contrasting the beauty of the expensive home, was the mess Daisy has assumedly made. There was broken glass, old food, empty wine bottles and clothes scattered across the floor.
He eyes her cautiously as he he steps inside. She shut the door behind him and walks over to the kitchen. "I would've cleaned a bit, but I honestly wasn't expecting company." She says sarcastically. "You want something to drink?" With the knife still in hand, she grabs a half full bottle of wine, and two glasses.
Kai was quiet, desperately wanting to understand where her head was at, but not sure what questions to ask. He smirked a bit. "It's been a while." Kai says, sitting down at the counter as she poured him a drink.
She watched him intently as she handed the glass to him. "Has it been?" Daisy asks cocking her head to the side. He chuckles as he takes a sip. She leaned forward on the counter he sat on and watched him with narrow eyes, leaning on her hand that held the knife. "Why the hell are you here?" She asks.
"Well, it's definitely not by choice." Kai says. "Made a bit of a mess back home." He makes an awkward face. "Got kicked out the Gemini Coven way."
"Kicked out?" She says.
He cocked his head to the side and thought for a second, quickly processing that she probably has zero clue what happened to her. His lips turned up into a smirk. "Where do you think you are right now?" He asks, amused.
She takes a swig from her drink and shrugs, "No where. I'm like— dead or some shit." She laughs.
Kai scoffed, then stood up from the counter and walked around nonchalantly as he spoke. "I've got good news, and bad news." He says, glancing out the windows, then back to Daisy, who watched him confusedly. "You're not dead."
Daisy groans, leaning her head back. "Bummer."
Kai looks at her, shocked at her response. He was definitely expecting much more emotion filled responses coming from her. But a lot has changed.
"But we are stuck in a looping prison world created by my coven and the only way we can get out is with an ascendant— which I do not have." He says.
"Ah, that was my second guess." Daisy says sarcastically, taking another drink.
Kai looked at her again, his mind trying to wrap around this person who he was speaking to. It felt like he was talking to someone that looked like her, but it wasn't her. He clenched his jaw, searching for any sign of recognition of the lifeless girl that stood in front of him.
"Are you okay?" He asks, it sounded stupid when he said it out loud.
Daisy let out a loud laugh, almost choking on her wine. "Am I okay?" She says, leaning off the counter. "Hmm. I don't know I've been in complete isolation for almost five years, thinking I was in some kind of purgatory because I accidentally fucking killed myself when I was trying to kill my psychopath boyfriend, who is now standing in my fucking kitchen— but I guess that's just not the case!" She says quickly, flailing the knife around.
He narrowed his eyebrows at her, carefully thinking over his next words. "I tried—"
"Blah." Daisy says loudly and annoyedly, interrupting him
He was taken aback, he paused for a second before trying to speak again. "I—"
"Blah blah blah." Daisy says louder this time, walking over to her stereo.
Kai, in a mix of shock and frustration, widens his eyes. He waits for her to be quiet so he could speak again. "Daisy I tried—"
She turns the music up loudly, Super Freak by Rick James blasted throughout the room. Kai shut his mouth quickly, pissed. He watched with angry eyes as she danced around to the music. Kai quickly started to walk towards the stereo to turn it down, but she stepped in front of him, pointing the knife directly at him.
He glanced down at it, then slowly back to her. "You think I haven't tried this?" Kai says with a smirk. "I can't die here." He scoffs.
She smirks back, raising an eyebrow. "Oh, I know that." She says, then shrugs. "But that just makes it much more fun."
Without hesitation, she plunges the knife directly into his stomach. He stumbles forward, and she grabs onto him, keeping him on his feet. "Hurts, doesn't it?" She frowns. Adrenaline pumped through her veins, the 'zero consequences' rule was much more exciting when there were other parties involved.
Daisy lets him fall to the ground as she pulled it out of his gut. She examines the now bloodied knife before leaning down towards him as he gasped for air.
His eyes were furious, he flicked his hand up towards her and weakly muttered a spell, but nothing happened. He was out of the magic he siphoned out of his family's Grimoire.
Daisy frowned. "That's embarrassing." She scoffs. She examines him, feeling satisfied. She brings the knife up to his chin, lifting his head up to meet her eyes as he squirmed. She tilted her head to the side. "But I guess now, we're finally even."
