CHAPTER FORTY ONE

song: cry little sister by gerard mcmann
'PRETEND INFERIORITY, and encourage his arrogance.'
The Art of War.
The quote replayed in her head on a countless loop as she got ready for the dance, like a song. She heard herself saying it in a whisper, as if to provide herself with a bit of comfort. She remembered reading the book her junior year in Literature class, and thought it to be a pointless read, that would never apply to her life. And it concerned her that it now did.
Daisy covered up her dark circles and tired eyes with tedious amounts of concealer, and applied dark eyeshadow. As she wiped the blush across her cheeks, she felt herself flinching at the touch of the brush.
She sat the brush down on her vanity, and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. As silence overcame her mind, and her room, the sound of her alarm clock ticking beside her bed came into her senses.
She opened her eyes and glanced at it, and then to the door as she heard the garage opening from downstairs. She stood from her chair, and took a glance in the mirror, examining her long, velvet, slim fitting violet dress.
She looked eighteen. Like a teenage girl about to go to the Valentine's formal with her boyfriend. But that wasn't what she was. She knew what she was, what she had become, and she hated herself.
Daisy ran her hands over her dress as she stared in the mirror, then she glanced to her desk. She walked to it, her heels clicking against the hardwood floors. She opened the drawer, and gently grabbed the handgun that she'd stolen from George's things.
It was small, and heavier than she thought. She held it up and examined it. Every time she had looked at it in the past few hours, she expected her mind to change, but it only made her more eager.
It was ironic that the one thing Kai showed her about herself was the one thing that would lead to his demise.
She opens the magazine of her gun by tapping it on her palm, checking to see it fully loaded with bullets. She closed it again. Daisy was grateful George brought her to the shooting range all those years ago. She cocked it, and pointed it at the mirror she stood in front of.
She wasn't scared, not anymore. There was a part of her that knew she would always end up this way, as much as she tried to hide this part of her down. The years of therapy didn't do anything but bottle up all of these emotions that she was too fragile to keep hidden.
The gun sat perfectly in her hand, as she pointed it at herself in the mirror. Breathing heavily, she felt her finger graze the trigger, a rush of adrenaline making her heart skip a beat.
"Daisy?" Her mom yells from downstairs.
Daisy quickly un-cocks the gun. She moves the slit of her dress to the side, and shoves the gun into the thigh holster she had belted onto her leg. She turns back to the dresser, grabbing a pocket knife, just in case, and shoving it in her bra.
After taking one last glance in the mirror, she spun around towards the door and went downstairs. The familiar sound of her mother's hospital shoes squeaking against the floor brought her a strange amount of comfort, and a smile tugged at her lips as she got to the bottom of the steps and saw her mom.
"So we're just sneaking off with our boyfriends on road trips whenever we want now? Without any warning?!" Susan says frustratedly, flailing her arms out to the side. Her eyes soften as she examines her daughter. "Well, don't you look pretty." She said lovingly.
Daisy smiled. "Thanks." She felt a knot grow in her throat. "I'm sorry— he—" She swallowed. "He surprised me, and you were at work so I just left a note." She lied.
Susan inhaled deeply. "Okay." She shrugged it off. "It's not like me and your dad didn't sneak off as kids." She mumbled a bit to herself, then focused her attention back to Daisy. "Where are you going?"
Daisy walked fully into the kitchen, grabbing a coat off the coat rack. "The Valentine's formal." She responded.
"With Kai?" Susan asks, as she put her reading glasses on and began to write on the bills they had received in the mail.
Daisy's heart skipped a beat at the sound of his name. "Mhm."
"Aw, that'll be fun." Susan asks. "Is he coming to pick you up?"
"Yeah, he should be here soon." Daisy shrugged a bit.
Susan looks up from writing. "Well— let me get my camera," She begins to walk to the stairway, but Daisy stops her.
"No, no, we're already late." Daisy says, she glances behind her, and out the window, to see Kai's car come to a stop in the street outside her house. Her breath hitched. "He's here." She let out, then turned to her mom.
Susan smiled softly, "Well, you look beautiful." She said, placing a gentle hand on her daughters shoulder.
Daisy felt her lips begin to tremble, and she quickly pulled her mother in for a hug. The hug could never be long enough for Daisy. In her mother's arms she was safe. As much as she tried to hold it in, tears began to spew from her eyes, and she clung her mom closer— terrified.
Susan scoffs, "What is this for?" She says surprisedly as she hugged Daisy back.
"I love you." Daisy choked on her words.
She wondered what would happen to her family when they found out what she was, what she had become. How could she have been so selfish? She had not only ruined her life— but her family's too. For a cheap thrill.
"And I'm sorry." Daisy bit her lip to try and keep from screaming crying as she buried her head in her mom's neck.
"For what?" Susan laughed a bit, shocked at Daisy's first show of affection in years. "Daze— come on you're gonna ruin your makeup." Susan says, gently pulling Daisy off of her.
She didn't want to let go of her mom. She just wanted her to tell her everything was gonna be okay, but it wasn't.
Daisy wiped her tears, and tried to catch her breath.
"Are you on your period?" Susan eyed Daisy.
Daisy scoffed, and let out a little laugh in between cries. "Alright, I'm gonna go now." She said, wiping her nose.
Susan watched her weirdly, but with a faint smile. "Be safe. Have fun! Try and get a picture for me."
Daisy nodded a bit, "Okay, Mom." She said. "I will."
As Daisy stepped outside, the cold winter air sent chills over her body as she walked over to Kai's car. She opened the door and smiled at him before she sat down.
"Hi." She said.
"You look—" Kai examined Daisy with his mouth open in awe. "Amazing." He said.
She clenched her jaw and forced a smile. "Thanks."
"You ready?" Kai asked, raising an eyebrow. He had on a formal black tux, and black tie.
She felt that sense of power she felt while holding the gun in the mirror wash over again, and she looked up at Kai with knowing eyes. "Yup." She said, but he was oblivious to her plans.
—
song: take my breath away by berlin
The school gym was full of students, in the dresses and tuxes they've been waiting to wear all year. Along the walls are balloons pinned on with cheap tacks, many of them already withering. Their colors are garish in the bold strip lights and from some dangle curled ribbons. It looked like a toddler's birthday party minus the cake and gifts. Music played loudly from speakers and boom boxes in each corner of the gym, and lights flew around the students dancing around.
Daisy looked around, trying to plan things out in her head. Kai held his hand out, raising his eyebrows at her. "You alright?"
She shook her head, and grabbed Kai's hand. "Yeah, yeah, I just—"
He squeezed her hand reassuringly. "Do you want punch?" Kai asked.
"Yes, please." She nodded, smiling faintly.
He nodded back, and turned to walk over to the punch bowl that was on the other side of the gym. As soon as he was out of side, Daisy turned to make sure that her gun wasn't visible through her dress, because that'd definitely be an awkward conversation.
"Daisy?" A familiar voice said.
She looked up, to see Jen, in the most beautiful light blue dress, her hair and makeup done perfectly. Christine, stood next to her, their arms linked together. Daisy smiled happily at Jen, her eyes soft. "Hi." She said.
"You look great." Jen said, admiring Daisy.
"Thank, you too." She smiled. "How have you been?" She asked, trying to make conversation to the surprisingly awkward interaction.
Jen shrugs, and glances at Christine, then back to Daisy. "Good, yeah. Basketball season started so I've been pretty busy with that." She says.
"Oh, cool, cool." Daisy nods a bit. "I've—"
"Oh my god—" Another familiar voice says, and she turns around to see Josette, her eyes wide and her mouth gapped open at Daisy. "You're—" Josette began to speak, but her attention was redirected to Kai, who came back with two cups of punch, raising a cocky eyebrow at Josette.
The song changed, and Christine turned to Jen. "I love this song." She said. "Come on." Christine held her hand out and pulled Jen to the dance floor.
"I'll talk to you guys in a bit!" Jen said happily, as she was dragged off.
Josette's cautious eyes stayed glued on Kai, who wrapped his arms around Daisy's shoulders as he handed her punch. "Hey, sis." He said, proudly.
Josette swallows glancing in between Daisy and Kai. "What are you guys doing here?"
Daisy stayed frozen, trying to communicate that she needed help from Josette, without Kai catching on.
"Are we not allowed to come to our school's dances?" Kai scoffs, tapping his rings on the glass cup before taking a sip.
Josette swallows then turns to Daisy. "Where have you been the past few days?" She asks.
Kai turns to Daisy, awaiting her response. "Road trip." She said, calmly. "Yeah. Kai surprised me."
Kai turned back to Josette happily. "Is that okay with you?" He asks, sarcastically. Josette clenches her jaw, then turns to Daisy as Kai began to continue on. "Yeah I just thought, we've been dating for so long, we deserved a..."
Kai rambled on, and Josette and Daisy just stared at each other. Daisy screamed for help as much as she could without opening her mouth.
"So, yeah." Kai said, his voice ramming his way back into Daisy's ears. "Hopefully you didn't miss me too bad." He said.
"Well." Josette swallowed. "I'll catch up with you guys later. Have fun." She said, taking one last glance at Daisy before turning away.
No, no, no, no. Don't leave. Daisy thought as Josette scrambled out the gym doors into the hall.
"Do we dance now?" Kai asked.
Daisy rolled her eyes internally. "Yup." She said, grabbing his hand and dragging him out to the dance floor.
Pushing past people to get to an open spot, Daisy pandered what her plan really was, but quickly came to the conclusion that she worked better under stress— or at least that's what she told herself.
Take My Breath Away by Berlin played through the speakers, and everyone joined up with their partners in a slow dance. Kai smiled faintly as he brought Daisy closer, she loosely dangled her hands around his shoulders and neck, and his hands rested on her hips.
"Is this okay?" Kai asked.
Jesus. She thought. So considerate of him to ask. "Yup." She nodded. She looked around, at all the people that she had to get out of her before Kai did what he had planned. Her eyes trailed around the gym for anything that would insinuate escape.
"I like this dress on you." Kai says, and Daisy focuses her attention back to him as they slowly swayed to the music.
She still blushed at his words. "Thanks." She said.
"You seem on edge." He said, after eyeing her for a second.
"I am on edge." She laughed it off. "I don't really understand what you have planned for tonight."
He smiled a bit. "Don't worry about it, leave it up to me." He said, then nodded reassuringly. "I just want you to have fun." He waited for second, then leaned in, planting a kiss on her lips.
She kissed back, admiring the softness of his lips. He pulled away, but brought Daisy closer to him, she leaned her head on his chest, looking around the gym as they danced.
"How do you know it'll work?" Daisy asks, trying to make conversation as her eyes darted around the room— landing on the fire alarm switch in the corner of the gym.
"I know a lot of things." Kai says, he leans close to her ear. "Like how you have a gun on you right now."
Daisy felt her heart sink into her feet. She froze, her eyes wide as Kai kept dancing with her, swaying back and forth to the song.
"You don't think I'm that dumb, do you?" He asks, and she felt his hot breath on her neck. "Honestly, I'm insulted."
Daisy swallowed, and pulled her head off his chest, meeting his gaze with eyes as dark as his. She lifted her chin, a subconscious power move.
Kai felt a smirk tug on his lips. "I'll give you a head st—"
Daisy lifted her knee up quickly and forcefully, plunging her knee into his groin. Kai toppled over with a grunt, and she had already spun around and pushed her way through the crowd before he could say anything.
Daisy, with adrenaline and panic flooding her veins, pushed aggressively through the mass of students, charging towards the fire alarm near the door. Her hands reached it, and she yanked it down, the ear piercing alarm flooding the gym.
Unnecessary screams erupted from the students as they all began to rush for the exit, the music still playing off the speakers.
Kai stayed stood in place, on the opposite side of the gym, his eyes glued on Daisy as people shoved past him to leave.
She took a biology class once. Adrenaline is activating her sympathetic nervous system, making her heart beat faster, diverting blood to her muscles and away from her gut. She liked the feeling, as she'd grown very familiar with it.
She breathed heavily, almost in sync with Kai, as the last of the students fled the gym. She knew she didn't have long before people realized it was a false alarm, and came back inside, but she also knew it wouldn't end here. He'd drag it out. Make it a game.
Daisy glanced out the gym doors, to see everyone outside, walking to their cars to shield from the cold. She flipped the switch of the fire alarm back up, and the patronizing alarm came to a stop.
Music still echoed throughout the gym, lights still danced on their skin. She swallowed as she turned to Kai. "Didn't think we'd get to this part of the night that fast." She scoffed a bit. "I didn't even get a full dance."
Kai shrugged, beginning to pace. "You're the one with a gun strapped to your leg."
"Oh, yeah." Daisy says, moving her dress out of the way and grabbing it out of the holster. She examined it in her hand.
"You're really gonna shoot me?" He scoffed. "That's a little excessive, even for you."
She glanced up at him. "What? Do you prefer a slit throat? A bashed in head?" She cocked her head to the side. "A broken neck?"
Kai ran his tongue over his teeth. "I mean," He scoffed. "You're welcome to try."
Daisy clenched her jaw, tired of the stalling. She lifted the gun towards Kai, who didn't flinch. He glanced at it, and back to her.
"Poor planning." He clicked his tongue. "Everyone outside is gonna hear gunshots, then the police are gonna show up. See it's better if we choose a quieter route—"
"Let them come." Daisy spat. "Then maybe I'll finally get to tell them how much of a fucking psycho you are."
"Ah, ah." Kai said. "I can't take all the credit."
She clenched her jaw, unsure what to say next.
"Go ahead, take a shot." Kai said, crossing his arms behind him.
Daisy readjusted her grip on the gun.
"Try it." He taunted, slowly stepped towards her.
Daisy cocked the gun, and her chest tightened.
Kai was now only a few feet away.
Her hand began to shake, her mind was screaming at her to just do it. Just pull the trigger.
"Let me help you." Kai says, as he stepped right in front of her. She was frozen. He grabbed the barrel of the gun, gently, and placed the muzzle right up against his forehead. "Here." He looked straight at Daisy, her gun ready to kill. "Go ahead. Blow my brains out."
Daisy stared furiously at him, trying to bring herself to just get it over with.
"Add another body to your list." He taunted.
She couldn't do it. Not like this.
Her eyes faltered, and Kai noticed it immediately, he quickly grabbed the gun, then her arm, spinning her around and pulling him close to him. Her back was on his chest, he held her pinned up against him by his left arm, wrapped around her throat, as the other arm emptied the bullets from the gun right in front of her arms.
"Ooo." Kai breathed out into a scoff, as the bullets clanked into the ground. Daisy swallowed, lifting her chin as Kai tightened his grip on her slightly. He leaned close to her, she trembled at the feeling of his lips brushing against her ear. He laughed a bit, then fell very serious. "What are you gonna do now?"
Daisy quickly reached into her dress, whipping out the pocket knife that she had shoved into her bra. She switched the blade out, and plunged it behind her, expecting it to make contact with Kai's stomach, but instead she just stumbled backwards.
Kai was gone. He vanished. Completely. She looked around quickly, grabbing at her throat where his arm just was. She was the only person in the gym.
Daisy shoved the doors to the hallway open, looking around before quickly rushing out the hall. The light's still flashed from her fire alarm pull.
She breathed heavily, tightening her grip on the knife. "Kai!" She yelled, it echoed through the hall.
Built up anger flushed from her system, and she stormed down the locker bay. "Kai!" She yelled, her voice loud and coarse this time. She turned a corner, and he stood at the end of the hall.
"Were you looking for me?" He asks, then vanishes.
"Or me?" He says from behind her, Daisy spins around quickly, only for him to grab her, she flails her arms in protest, swinging the blade around. She wraps his arms around hers, holding them down, she kicks her legs out and screams.
"Shh!" Kai says as he struggles against her.
She swings the knife around as much as she could. It must've cut him at some point because he immediately dropped her. She ran down the hall, not checking to see if he was actually hurt.
Her eyes darted around the hallway, her heart beating as fast as her legs were taking her. She came to a quick half at the sight of a fire emergency kit enclosed in glass.
She glanced down the hall, watching as Kai held his bleeding arm as he charged towards her. Daisy turned back to the kit, squeezing her eyes shut before breaking the glass with her elbow, she let out a grunt at the impact, but reopened her eyes at the sound of glass breaking. She reached inside, yanking the red axe out of the kit, turning to Kai.
Strands of her hair covered her face, her heavy breathing moving them out of the way every time she exhaled. Daisy closed the pocket knife and shoved it back into her bra, before readjusting her grip on the axe, a hysterical smile forming on her lips.
"Come on." She let out quietly.
Kai lazily lifted his hand, and immediately Daisy's muscles tensed up completely— like every part of her body was having an intense cramp. Her eyes widened, and she gasped for air.
Kai kept his hand up as he walked towards her. "It hurts, doesn't it?" He says, nodding a bit. Daisy coughed, choking on her own breath. "Tell me." He says, his eyes growing concerned.
"It hurts." She lets out, in between chokes.
"I don't want to hurt you." He says, shaking his head. "But I can't let you kill me."
Daisy felt her throat tighten, and knew she only had a few more breaths left before she passed out— or died. "Go to hell." She let out, her vision beginning to go blurry.
Anger flashed over Kai's face, and he lifted up his other hand to perform another hand— but instead his eyes fell shut and he toppled forward, Josette stood behind where he stood with a hand out.
Daisy fell to the ground, air refilling her lungs as she hit the floor. Josette rushed over to her. Daisy brought her hands to her throat as she gasped for air.
"Breathe, breathe." Josette said, "You're okay now."
Daisy listened to her words, to her soft, safe words. Her eyes melted at the sight of her, and she immediately leaned up and embraced her in a tight hug.
"I'm so sorry." Daisy said, clinging onto Josette. "I should've listened to you." She wanted to cry, but didn't have the energy— or time.
"It's okay." Josette shook her head. "It doesn't matter now." She pulled away and looked at Daisy with reassuring eyes. "We don't have much time before he wakes up."
Daisy nodded quickly.
"Can you stand?" Josette says, and Daisy nodded again. Josette helped Daisy to her feet, and the two began to run down the hall to the back doors. "We'll go get my dad— he'll know what to do." Josette says, as they ran. Daisy didn't realize they were holding hands until just now.
As Josette shoves the door open and runs through, Daisy feels an invisible force keep her within the walls of the school— making her stumble back. Her eyes widen as she looks around frantically. "No..." She let out. "No no no no no no."
"He must've put up a boundary spell—" Josette says with wide eyes.
"Can't you bring it down?!" Daisy asks, as Josette stands on the outside, opposite side of the door.
"You can't bring it down unless you put it up." Josette says, her mind racing, grasping for ideas.
Daisy swallows harshly. "Go get your dad." She nods.
Josette shakes her head quickly. "I'm not leaving you."
"I'll be fine, I can hold him off until you get back." She says. "Go."
Josette keeps shaking her head. "I'm not leaving you!" She shouts, her eyes filling with tears.
"You have to!" Daisy shouts back. "Josette, go!"
Josette's lips tremble, and her body movements were full of hesitation. "I—" She began, but stopped herself.
"What?" Daisy asked with wide eyes.
Josette swallows. "Never mind." She let a tear fall. "I'll be back in a minute." She said, before turning and running to the parking lot.
The door shut to a close, and Daisy stood in front of it. Defeat filling her body.
There was no boundary spell. She made it up.
This is how it had to be.
She took a deep breath, turning on her heel back to the hall where Kai laid, knocked out.
What she needed will never come and no matter how much she seeks she won't find it. She wasn't born for great things, or to find her place in the sun. She could try every day, work for what she wants and needs, but there are no paths to success, not from here.
Exhausted, she bent down, and lifted Kai's body up, she wrapped his arm around her shoulders, and stood up, slowly dragging him towards into elevator.
She clicked the rooftop button and leaned against the wall with his lifeless body beside hers, knowing and awaiting what came next.
As the door opened to the rooftop, she dragged him out into the cold. Each step felt useless. Daisy plopped down against the wall, Kai sat next to her.
There was nothing left to pawn. She gazed around the rooftop with it's concrete half walls, dappled with moss, a few old benches. With the eyes that could cry no more, she gazed up at the stars, knowing her light had gone out.
She looked down at Kai, as she felt him begin to wake up.
He blinked a few times before registering what had happened, and then where he was. He turned to Daisy confusedly, still sad next to her.
She let out a scoff, then leaned her head back up to look at the stars.
"What are you doing?" He asks, confusedly.
"Star gazing." Daisy says, like it was obvious.
She watched Kai contemplate whether what had gone down ten minutes ago had actually happened, or if he had just dreamt it up.
He looks at her with narrow eyes as she watches the stars.
"What happened?" Kai asked.
Daisy swallowed, then shrugged. "Josette knocked you out. Then she left to go get your dad." She said lazily. "I drug you up here."
He narrowed his eyebrows. "Why?"
Daisy leaned her head forward, meeting his eyes. "I want to dance with you." She said. He eyed her, confused by this suddenly calm atmosphere. "No games. No tricks." She felt her eyes tear up. "Just us."
Her eyes were frozen over like the surface of a winter puddle, robbing them of their usual warmth. She's in there, Kai knew it, but it's like she just took a huge step back from life. He wanted to reach in and tell her it wasn't hopeless, that they weren't hopeless.
"Just us?" Kai asked, his eyes soft.
Daisy closed her eyes, and let a warm tear fall down her cheek. "Just us."
Kai hesitantly got to his feet, before he held out his hand. Daisy gently grabbed it and let him help her off the ground.
She wasn't scared.
He brought her close, and they began to sway back and forth to the music that wasn't there. She laid her head on his chest and closed her eyes, another tear falling.
Kai felt her crying. He wanted to cry with her. He had ruined her. He knew it. He hated himself for it but he couldn't stop. She was completely broken— and it was all at his hand.
"I loved you, you know?" Daisy spoke up, her head still leaned on her chest, eyes still closed.
"I still love you."
Daisy swallowed the knot in her throat.
"It's hard to love someone after what you've done to me." Daisy said. She felt like she was talking outside of her body. Like she was just speaking freely with no consequences that would be at the hand of someone else, only hers.
"I know." Kai said, a tear falling. "I'm sorry."
"No you're not." She said softly. "You don't know what you are."
"I'm sorry."
Daisy bit her lip, and readjusted the knife she held in her hand behind his back.
Daisy let one last tear fall, before plunging the knife into Kai's back, deep enough to where it penetrated her stomach, too. Like she wanted.
It was a bad feeling, the feeling of a knife plunging through your skin at your own hand. She didn't really register the immense pain she was in, because she was too distracted by the fact that Kai had vanished before the knife could've touched him.
She let out a scoff, dumbfounded, as her hand fell from the knife in her stomach, and her knees fell to the ground.
"No." Kai let out, he now stood behind her, and he caught her before she could completely hit the ground. Panic took over every emotion in his body, ridding his brain of any rational thought. He shook like a leaf, his eyes wider than they've ever been. "No, no—" He shook his head frantically as he held her. "Why did you do this?!"
Daisy coughed, glancing down at the knife. "Well, I thought—" She swallowed, trying to form words through the pain. "I thought we'd both be going." She almost let out a chuckle, but it hurt too much.
Why was she so calm about it?! Kai thought, he looked around quickly. He didn't even care that she just tried to kill him, it wasn't the first time. His mind was racing, tricking him into thinking that this wasn't really happening.
"Daze—" Kai said, a tear falling from his eye as he held her in his lap. "Why did you—" he couldn't form words.
"Everyone gets what's coming to them." Daisy let out, before coughing up a bit of blood. Her lips trembled, and she didn't even realize she was crying.
"Please." He cried.
"You'll get—" She swallowed harshly, knowing it was near. "You'll get what's coming for you, too."
He held her. A face she despised, hated, and feared brought her comfort in her final moments. Until her eyes fell lifeless, and her body still.
The world turned into a blur, and so did all the sounds. The taste. The smell. Everything was just gone. He paused trying to hold back the strange feelings rumbling inside of him but he couldn't. So many tears burst forth like water from a dam, spilling down his face.
Kai cried as if the ferocity of it might bring her back; as if by the sheer force of his grief her actions would be undone. She was his only love, she could not be gone.
He can feel himself unraveling, the threads of every happy memory he could ever once recall, all but a disarray of strings scattered about his feet. His knees dig into the concrete as he hits the ground, his hands unsteady as they silently claw at the ground. He opens his mouth, but not a sound comes out, his head violently quivering as if there is a drill to the back of his skull. His eyes see nothing; they have lost all sight of what is and what could have been.
He killed her.
Next came Josette, who didn't even let the elevator fully open before she fell to her knees at the sight of Daisy. His dad ran out, grabbing Kai's arms and pulling him back. Kai didn't even fight it. He didn't want to.
From the moment he came into her life, she was already dead.
