Issue #3: Castle Carnival
Unknown
The form of Morgan le Fay is standing in a fog. The air is swarmed with purple, red, yellow, white, and green smoke. Morgan le Fay looks around warily. She knows she isn't alone.
Joker: Cheer up, m'lady! The fun is only just about to start. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Morgan le Fay: You have...such power...how?
Joker: Touched a magic rock, my hair turned green, and my smile got wider blah blah blah.
The disembodied voice of the Joker says once more. The voice seems to come from nowhere and everywhere all at once. Morgan can't tell what's real and what's fictional anymore. She's been trapped too long inside whatever hell she's in.
Morgan le Fay: How long has it been?
Joker: Why don't you check your clock...
The large, leaning form of London's enormous clocktower Big Ben rises out of the ground. The hands are replaced with smiling Joker faces and are spinning around frantically.
Joker: What's wrong? Need a closer look!?
He shouts. Big Ben's foundation begins to crack and the large tower falls, smashing around Morgan le Fay. When the smoke clears, she's completely fine. Her arms are raised as if trying to brace for the impact, but the impact never came. She lowers her arms as thunderous laughter echoes around her.
Joker: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!! You really thought I'd let it hit you!? That's just rude...I thought we were really connecting. Don't you trust me, Ms. le Fay?
Morgan le Fay: How long have I been in here, clown?
Joker: Who knows...I don't have a calendar in here. You know what they say, time flies when you're having FUN!!!
Morgan le Fay: Release me! I have a son!
Joker: Had!
The form of a body appears sprawled out on the ground. The silhouette matches that of her son, Mordred.
Morgan rushes to get closer to the boy, to help him, but no matter how much she runs, she doesn't seem to get any closer. Every step forward feels like a step two yards back. Mordred crawls towards her, calling out for weakly, before the shadowy silhouette of a man steps behind him. The man, whose frame matches that of the Joker, raises his arm a little, then there's a flash and a loud bang. Mordred's body falls limp and blood pools beneath him as the man disappears.
As if her legs finally work now, Morgan speeds towards her son. She heaves his deadweight body up onto her lap and rolls him over. When she does, she finds his face mutilated with a disgusting smile etched into his face. As she begins to mourn, the head turns to look at her before laughing. Though it starts as Mordred, it fades into the hysterical laughter of the Joker. The body twists and looks up at her, completely alive.
Joker: SURPRISE! HAHAHAHAHAHAAA!! Your boy is still alive...I think. I didn't kill him at least.
He says as he stands up and walks around, his body still the body of her son Mordred. Joker shrugs his shoulders around, fidgeting with the costume.
Joker: You really make him wear this thing!? No wonder he tried to send you to a pocket dimension.
He says, mumbling the second half to himself more than saying it to Morgan.
Morgan le Fay: Why don't my powers work here?
Joker: The powerful don't have power here. This is where the weak get their revenge! Speaking of revenge, I'm sure whoever you're working for is about to launch an attack to free you...Hahahahahaha...
Morgan le Fay: You laugh at that, clown?
Joker: Of course...if they attack and I die...you're stuck here forever! Isn't that hilarious!?!
Morgan le Fay: Do I look amused?
Joker: No, a lil chubby around the waist though. Hahahahahahahahahaaaa!!!
Morgan le Fay: You dare mock me!?!
Joker: I dare to mock a lot of people, it's my whole thing. Pay attention, darling, or you won't pass the POP QUIZ!
As soon as he says that, his head pops and a stream of confetti springs out of the body, taking the blood's place. Morgan jumps slightly at the pop. Then, clutching his gut while laying down, kicking as he laughs, is the Joker. As he laughs, he makes fun of the face Morgan le Fay made when his head popped.
Morgan le Fay: I will not be mocked!
Joker: Oh? And what are you going to do about it? The only way for you to use your powers is by leaving here and the only way out is by telling me who...you...WORK FOR!?!
Morgan le Fay: I can't...he'll execute my son...
Joker: Looky there! Finally, some progress! We've now established that it's a he and he has your son. Now...give Papa J a name.
Morgan le Fay: I CAN'T!
Joker: WHY!?!
Morgan le Fay: YOU WOULD NOT UNDERSTAND!! YOU HAVE NO SON!!
Joker: YOU DON'T KNOW THAT!!!
Morgan le Fay breathes heavily, questioning if the Mad Clown actually has children or not. He could be bluffing or he could be telling the truth. At this point, she doesn't know what is real anymore. Unfortunately for her, that's exactly what Joker wants.
Joker: If you won't tell one of me...what about all of me?
The Clown Prince of Chaos stands with a smile. His body duplicates over and over again, forming a circle of Jokers around Morgan le Fay.
Joker: Put 'er there, Morggie!!
They all reach their right hands out. As soon as they make contact, her body is flooded with electricity. She shakes as her muscles tense repeatedly, her cold, black heart stuck contracting and her brain being numb from the constant agony. She wants to fall away from the pain, but she can't. He's everywhere. They are everywhere. Any direction she could go is blocked off by the man in the purple tuxedo. His sinister cackling filling the torturous dimension she's trapped in. Finally, for whatever reason, he stops. All of the Jokers merge back into one body and he takes his hand away, the red Joybuzzer still sparking with arcs of electricity.
Joker: There's nothing like the shock of losing someone you love...Believe me, I know what that's like. Even someone as cruel and twisted as you doesn't deserve to feel something like that.
He says, completely serious for once. Joker isn't even looking at Morgan. His eyes are staring through the multi-colored cloudy floor beneath him. Whatever he's looking at is bringing him great sadness, like an old pain he's cursed with remembering. Suddenly, the area they're in grows dark with only a single, dimly lit lightbulb providing the area with light. It swings as a young man, a teenager in red, yellow, and black, lays there covered in blood.
Above him stands a cruel man, his hair only growing out of half of his head. One eye appears to be much larger than the other, his yellow teeth and silver coin visible in the faint light.
Joker: That boy was like a nephew to me...and that ANIMAL TOOK HIM FROM ME!!!
He shouts, turning away from the scene as the coin flips through the air. There's a nearly silent gunshot that echoes as the boy fades. Joker looks back at Morgan, his eyes filled with more pain and madness than she ever thought possible.
Joker: So let's get something straight, I know what it's like to lose someone...to have them held from you...to do all you can and still be too late despite the seemingly endless power you have!
He reaches into his jacket and pulls out a revolver, just like the one Morgan could see the man with the half-burnt face holding towards the child, only the barrel is abnormally long. In the Clown Prince of Chaos' other hand, he holds a coin slightly larger than a quarter. He tosses it several times while pulling the hammer back with his thumb.
Joker: I may be an agent of chaos...but even chaos has order. So...we're gonna play the same game that pathetic excuse for an attorney played with my favorite little bird...Heads, you die. Tails, you live...unless you give me a name...
Morgan watches the coin flip repeatedly. The Clown Prince grows more and more impatient with her lack of answering. She looks from the gun to the coin, then back to the gun.
Joker: You won't like what happens if the time runs out. 30 seconds...
He warns. She looks back and forth again. The Mad Clown begins counting down. Her heart races. Who knows if he can actually kill her in this weird dimension? He's able to duplicate himself, summon illusions, and raise wonders of the world from the dust clouds that make up the floor. What can't he do here?
Joker: 3...2...
Morgan le Fay: Lord!
She blurts out. Joker raises an eyebrow.
Joker: Now's not the time for confession, my dear.
Morgan le Fay: His name...is Maxwell Lord...
Joker: I see...let's see if the coin likes your answer.
He catches the coin, looks at it, then frowns.
Joker: Oof...I'll make sure your kiddo knows how much you loved him.
He pulls the trigger and a red flag unveils with a large BANG!!! written across it. He laughs hysterically, going around in circles as he clutches his stomach. Finally, he calms down enough and looks her dead in the eyes, his grin wide and toothy.
Joker: Now then, that's all I need. I'll be going, thank you for all your help.
Morgan le Fay: You promised you would let me out if I talked!
Joker: Did I? Hmm...Guess I lied! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!! SEE YA!
He puts the BANG!!! flag gun to his head and pulls the trigger. The flag flies straight through his head before he vanishes.
Watchtower
Joker walks out of an interrogation room where Morgan le Fay sits on the other side of the table, deathly still, as if she is frozen in place. Joker walks out of the room with a wide smile on his face, finally returning to his natural look. As natural as he can get anyway.
(A/N: Like this, but with green hair and bleached white skin.)
As he walks into the mess hall, he sees his favorite birds talking to the Red Lantern King Ragnarok, the Lord of War and Son of Mars Ares, and the Hero Who Frags Blake.
Blake: She finally crack?
Joker: Like an egg. Haha!
Blake: Damn. Was hopin' I was gonna get a chance to test my new nuclear shells. You sure they'll work, Ares?
Ares: Does Batman know everyone's weaknesses?
Blake: Good point. So, who's the unlucky bastard we're gonna frag?
Joker: She said his name's Maxwell Lord.
Red Hood: That prick? I've been waiting to put a bullet in him since I was Robin.
Nightwing: Never wanted to shoot him. I have wanted to beat him to a pulp though.
Red Lantern: Bats know yet?
Joker: Not yet.
Nightwing: You might wanna leave a note on the Batcomputer keyboard. He hasn't been up to the Watchtower since the Firefly incident.
Blake: How's the big Bat anyway? Heard his ribs were fucked up.
Red Hood: He's fine. Recovered pretty quickly...despite Anne's protests.
Joker: Where is Anne?
Nightwing: Court. She's becoming the guardian to the little girl Firefly orphaned.
Blake: Surprised Bats didn't y'know...crrrrick...
He says, dragging his thumb across his throat with a smile. The guys chuckle. Despite the seriousness of the situation, most of these guys are soldiers or grew up with hard lives. They know that the best way to get through some things is by joking about it.
Ares: It's because of the child's presence. And Anne. He wouldn't kill in front of her.
Nightwing: He might now, but the four guys going after Waller might. Two of the best mercs, a pirate-turned-hero, and Bane of all people.
Red Lantern: The twins got put on that assignment? Damn, I was hoping for that one.
Red Hood: What assignment were you guys placed on?
Blake: Stoppin' a White Martian invasion.
Red Lantern: Findin' Sinestro.
Ares: Defend Metropolis in Dallas' absence. He hasn't fully gotten used to returning to action yet.
Red Lantern: Dying'll do that to you.
Blake: Talkin' from experience?
Red Lantern: I have all the memories of the creature that killed Dally. This thing's died hundreds of times.
Blake: Wouldn't know what that's like. Only person who can kill me's Lobo, an' he ain't exactly around right now.
Joker: Dead, I hope.
Blake: Nah. Stuck in a black hole. It's like death, but much worse.
Nightwing: Let J'onn know what you've got, Joker, then take your leave. Fate is being sent up to cover while you get some rest.
Joker: Sounds like a plan. I gotta show to go to tonight anyways.
Red Hood: Tell Zee we said hi.
Joker: Will do!
He shouts as he heads towards Martian Manhunter's position, which overlooks the rest of the Justice League Watchtower's mission area. The rest of the guys go back to talking about random nonsense while the thought of finally seeing Zatanna again fills Joker's mind. He hasn't seen her since she was injured in a battle against Doctor Hate. If it hadn't been for Joker's quick thinking and Doctor Fate's powers, they never would have made it out alive. Now, he gets to finally check up on her and get some much needed rest himself.
While thinking about rest, his mind wanders and begins to think about Anne and Calaway. There's no way his best friend and his cousin are getting any rest since Firefly's attacks. He makes a mental note to check in on them as soon as he gets a chance to. After all, it's the least he could do for the Bats since they welcomed him into their strange family with open arms.
