Chapter 24
"What did you want to see us about?" Kate Kane asked her cousin Bruce as she, Dick, Tim and Stephanie entered the Batcave to find Bruce and Selina waiting for them.
"As you know, I've recently joined another team." Bruce said.
"Yeah, the Justice League. Still can't believe you joined that." Dick said with a chuckle, which the others shared.
"The League is necessary for threats like the Atlantean invasion. Threats too big for any one hero alone, even Superman. But before the final battle, I unveiled our headquarters, the Hall of Justice, to my fellow Leaguers and we took a vote and agreed that all heroes over the age of 18 who fought at our sides during the war will be granted full League membership. Tim, Stephanie, I'm very proud of both of you and your time to join the League will come, but you're not ready for it yet." Bruce said and both Tim and Stephanie looked disappointed, but they understood, they were still kids and their mentor wanted to protect them. But it sounded like once they became legal adults, then they'd have a shot at getting in.
"Dick and Kate on the other hand, you've both been offered spots on the League now, if you want them. But we'll respect whatever you decide." Bruce said, though he already knew what Dick's response would be.
"Thanks for the invite, but I'm not looking to join that club right now. Especially since I'm still trying to establish myself as more than just Batman's sidekick in Bludhaven. I don't want to undo all the progress I've made. Besides, I've tried the team thing once before. It didn't work." Dick said.
"What happened with the Titans wasn't your fault Dick." Bruce said, knowing what his former partner was talking about. The collapse of his old team.
"Really, because it sure doesn't feel that way. The Titans were a mistake. They're the reason I gave up on being Robin. I'm better off as a solo act." Dick said.
"I told myself the same thing for years until I recruited you." Bruce said.
"Bruce, you know what happened. Mari, Hank, Dawn and Anissa, none of them will even speak to me anymore and I don't blame them. Hell, I'm amazed that Mari was willing to work with me during the war." Dick said of his former teammates, Vixen, Hawk, Dove and Thunder.
"Mari's agreed to join the League already, since she doesn't seem to hold on to the past." Bruce said.
"I'm not joining Bruce. I'm a solo act. That's what you trained me to be." Dick said, making it clear that his decision was final.
"If you change your mind, you have a standing invitation." Bruce said and Dick nodded, while the rest of them looked confused, since none of them knew what had happened with Dick's old team, the Titans.
"Thank you and if you ever need me, just call." Dick said and Bruce nodded as he turned to Kate.
"And what about you Kate?" Bruce asked.
"I'm in. But I do think that if I'm joining the League, then it's time for me to go solo like Dick did. I'm ready." Kate said and Bruce nodded.
"I've been waiting for you to realize that you're ready. You have been for a while." Bruce said.
"Wait, you're not mad?" Kate asked.
"Kate, you're at the same point Dick was when he left, except it took you a lot less time to get to that point." Bruce said.
"Especially with the way she stepped up as a leader while you were helping fight a war." Selina said with a smile.
"I know. And honestly, I've been thinking about leaving Gotham for awhile, not just because it's your town and I want to separate myself from you a bit, but it's also because being here just reminds me of my mom and my sister, not to mention my dad is not helping matters, since you know how he feels about vigilantes, not to mention he recently hired Sophie to work for the Crows. I think he thought it might make me more likely to want to work for him." Kate said, showing exactly what she thought of that.
"I'm guessing it has the opposite effect?" Dick asked with a smirk.
"She broke my heart Dick. I know that you and Barbara ended things on good terms, but Sophie, I don't know if I'll ever be able to forgive her for what she did. And I'm not ready to find out. I think that a change of scenery is the best thing for me right now." Kate said.
"You can pick a city after the official Justice League induction ceremony in Washington DC tomorrow. And after that, I'm gonna need to do some recruiting, since with Selina on leave to be a full time parent to Damien, Dick in Bludhaven, Helena's off at college and now Kate is leaving the nest too. Tim and Stephanie are great, but we need more help." Bruce said, since Helena had hung up her mask when she'd graduated, saying that while she'd loved being Huntress, she wanted some normalcy in her life, which Bruce had respected.
"I think I know someone who might be useful." Stephanie said.
