After The Regeneration
Barbara Gordon, in her Batgirl suit, was walking to the Clocktower. She was on her phone, trying to reach out to Bruce. She was on the verge of tears. A minute later, Batman picked up the phone and said, "Batman here." Barbara breathed in and asked, "Bruce? Can you please come over to the Clocktower? I need to speak to you." Batman could tell there was a form of distress in Barbara's voice. He hadn't heard that type of distress since the time he visited her in the hospital during her paralysis and Jim had been kidnapped by The Joker. There was even a hint of guilt in her voice. "I'm busy stopping Zsasz," said Batman, "but when I'm done, I'll meet you at The Clocktower soon. I promise." Barbara sniffled and said, "alright. I'll see you soon. You know what room I'm in." She then hung up and went into the Clocktower. There were still traces of Doctor Woof's blood on her gloves and the rest of her suit. Her gloves were also bloody from punching Joker. Barbara then took the stairs to where her room was. When she became Oracle, Bruce let her live in the Clocktower because of how convenient the technology was for her. She still liked to live there. Once she got inside, Barbara took off her cowl, dropping it on the floor. It was so hard not to cry right now. 30 minutes later, Batman came in to her floor. "Barbara? Are you okay?" Batman asked, turning off his voice enhancer. He noticed the blood. Barbara looked at Batman, and then she hugged him tightly, bursting into tears. Batman looked at her sadly. He hadn't seen her this devastated since Jason died. "Joker..." Barbara said through the sobs, "he stalked me and Dr. Woof... I was afraid of what he was going to do to me... Dr. Woof bit him, and then Joker stabbed him constantly... There was so much blood... The stabs were so fatal... He died and then he regenerated..." She continued to cry as Batman hugged her. He studied the anatomy of Time Lords, and knew what would happen if a Time Lord suffered a wound that was fatal, their body would regenerate into something else. It was almost like death. "Barbara, I'm so sorry..." Batman said, "I know he meant a lot to you as a friend. Listen to me... This isn't your fault..."
"But it is my fault Bruce!" Barbara protested, "I shouldn't have let my fears of the Joker get the better of me! If I had just taken Joker out before he stabbed Doctor Woof and had not gotten into fight or flight mode, maybe he would still be alive and wouldn't have regenerated into a Scotty! I could have done something, but I let my personal demons get in the way, and Dr. Woof had to suffer for it!" Barbara was trying her best not to hyperventilate. "Some things are beyond our control," said Batman, "but you shouldn't blame yourself Barbara. You should at least take comfort in the fact that Doctor Woof didn't die alone, and that he was surrounded by people who genuinely cared for him, including you. And there will still be part of him that will never leave you." He gently wiped her tears. Barbara smiled a little, taking comfort in Bruce's words. "I can promise you this much Barbara," said Bruce, "if Joker ever tries to harm you again, I will not hesitate to kill him." And that was a promise Bruce intended to keep, for Barbara and her friend Dr. Woof.
