Chapter Twenty-Three

Enid ran through the woods, her heart beating against her chest wildly. Her feet couldn't handle this much longer, but she had to keep moving. She had to protect herself, and more importantly, Lori.

Lori snuggled against Enid's chest as Enid rushed through the woods. The sun beat down on her harshly, but that didn't stop her. Her legs brushed twigs and rocks as she heard a loud, voice behind her.

And at that moment, Enid ran faster than she had in her whole life. Because she knew Negan was following her, and she wasn't going to be dead today.

Her legs were weak and fragile, and right as she thought she was doing okay, she tumbled to the ground, her baby in her arms. Thankfully Enid landed sideways and didn't land on the baby. But Lori had had enough running, and she bursted out in tears, clinging on to her mother.

Enid felt a sharp pain in her leg and looked to her left, a rock was shoved directly into her skin and out the other side. She almost screamed, but she managed to let out a small whimper as she grasped Lori in her hands. And all she could do was lay there, because her leg wouldn't budge. Her whole body felt numb, and as her baby balled and screamed, Enid fell into a darkness of quiet.

"Enid? ENID?!"

Enid felt herself being shaken, arms around her tightly. Her eyes jolted open, and she spatted to gasp for air. Leaves crumbled in her hair as Carl held her tightly.

"C-Carl?" She gasped. "Where's Lori?!"

In the middle of the forest, Carl begin to sob. He grasped onto Enid tightly, his palms curling on her skin.

"Where is she?" Enid shouted, looking around her. Carl's arms got in the way, and she could barely see with the panic causing blinding tears in her eyes.

"He took her..." Carl whispered, his lips quivering. "He's gone and he took her."

Enid's mind went blank. Her heart beat sped up, and she clenched her hands into fists. She stood up, ignoring the pain shooting through her body. Carl stood slowly, looking into her eyes.

"Why the hell does he just come after us?" Carl mumbled, looking away.

As a single tear fell down Enid's cheek, she begin to walk. Wind blew her hair behind her, and her legs ached. But she wasn't going home without her baby. And neither was Carl, who followed her closely behind. And the truth was, Enid had never felt this way before. Because for once in her life, she felt powerful. The anger and sorrow mixed up inside her made something no one thought she could become. And with that, her footsteps never stopped.

Along the way, Carl saw figures from a distance. He made Enid duck behind a bush.

"We have no weapons," he whispered. "If they find us, we're dead."

Enid said nothing but nodded. Then, the figures moved towards her.

Carl made out a crossbow shape, and stood from the bush. There was Daryl, Rick, Sasha, and Aaron  were spotted. Carl pulled Enid out of the bush and rushed over to them.

"They took Lori," he said. "We're going to the Saviors. We're going to find her."

Rick processed this while staring into the eyes of Carl, and after moments, he only nodded his head with a small smile.

"Carl, you're a great father," He said, and Carl's heart brightened just one bit. "Daryl has found a stash of weapons over by the tunko trees," he explained as they began to run. "There's a lot of Saviors, you know that, don't you Carl?"

Carl nodded. "Hell yeah. But I feel like we can take them. I feel ready. I feel..."

"Powerful." Enid spoke for the first time in almost an hour. Carl looked back and smiled. Enid smiled back wistfully.

"The tunko trees are about a mile away, they're close to the Saviors place," Daryl said. "There's guns, crossbows--"

"And why are you telling us this now?" Enid asked bluntly.

"We've only been sneaking a few guns, Carl." Rick said. "If we took the whole stash, the Saviors would easily find out. They'd blame it on us, even if they did trade with other people. But if we can hurry over there with guns and bows, then they won't have time to look for them."

"We need a subtle plan," Sasha said. "And I think I have one."

"Let's hear it," Rick said as they were close to the trunko trees.

As Sasha explained each movement and skill carefully, and as everyone arrived at the trunko trees and met up with some Hilltop members, there were at least twenty three of them. Twenty three against a hundered. But they all grabbed weapons, and as they marched to the Saviors, Enid knew that this would be her day.

Her day she would finally be laid to rest.

But also, the day where Carl would get to have full custody over the baby.

The day she would see her baby for the last time.

They day she would die.

The day she would kill Negan.
