Chapter Twenty-One

The pair of eyes opened slowly, but steady. It was like nothing before. A pale face, feeling out of breath. The hand reached the chest, where the human felt her heart pounding. She almost jumped up, but was unable to feeling shock. She grasped onto a tree and used it to steady her as she stood, feeling nauseous as ever. Her eyes were bleak, and she let out a loud sob as tears rushed down her cheeks. Her hands shook as she grabbed onto her face and fell back to the ground, still crying.

Carl ran through the woods. He wanted nothing more to do with the Saviors. He was ready to kill them, and he was ready now.

But there was one thing he had to do first.

His walking stopped as he was close to approaching the tree he found Enid near, a flower clasped gently in his palm. He held back tears as he began to walk towards the tree. He heard loud sobs.

Carl peered over the tree, to find Enid. She was sobbing her heart out, tears rushing down her cheeks into her palms.
In shock, Carl ran to Enid and wrapped is arms around her, fearing to ever let go. He held her in his strong arms, and after moments, he felt her grasp against his.

"Enid?" He whispered. "What the hell happened? I thought you..."

"I don't.... I don't know," Enid tried to say, but it came out in sobs and she couldn't stop crying. "I was somewhere.... but I don't remember..... I was happy, I...."

"Shh, you don't have to explain." Carl said, grabbing her wrist and taking their grasp apart. "Come here," he said as he lifted her arm around his shoulder. He saw the large wound in her stomach and winced. "Does that hurt?"

"Does what hurt?" Enid asked, looking down. Then the pain came again. She held her breath and nodded.

"Then let's hurry." Carl said, helping her walk faster.

Carl quickly climbed back through the window, helping Enid as best he could. He sat her down on the bed, and all Enid would do was cry. That's all she was able to do. For the fact that she had died, hadn't she?

"Carl, I'm dead right now..." she whispered between sobs, the words muffled by her hands covering her face.

"No, Enid. You're not." Carl said, his voice shaking as he rushed to her and carefully put his arms around her. He squeezed her to his chest, but rather than sobbing, it was just quiet sniffles now.

"Lori's okay?"

"Lori's fine. But are you okay?"

"No." Enid said plainly, tears building up again. "I was dead. Wasn't I? I felt so... so breathless, so empty... so hollow. I don't understand...."

"I don't either," Carl said, squeezing his arms tighter. "But we can't worry about that. What matters is your here now, somehow."

"Why didn't I come back as a Walker?" Enid asked, and Carl's grip loosened a bit.

Carl bit his lip, and watched as Enid's eyes, full of confusion and bewildered thoughts, opened brightly to him for answers. He could only shrug, for he truly didn't know.

"That doesn't matter," he said. "You're here. We're here, remember that."

Enid felt her stomach churn, and suddenly, she felt blood rushing through her veins. She lifted her hand to her chest, feeling a steady, soft heartbeat that comforted her more than ever. She leaned back onto Carl's chest, and soon they were laying down on the bed, Enid's head still placed in the same position.

"I'm scared," she whispered.

"Why?" Carl whispered back.

"I think I'm still dead," Enid said.

"Is there a heartbeat in there?" Carl asked, and Enid only nodded. "Then you're alive."

"For a reason....." Enid said, thoughts buzzing through her mind as tears came again.

I'm so sorry! I must've killed you guys back there! The truth is, I was actually going to make that the last chapter... but you guys seem to like this story so much that I came up with a new plot for the future! So, I couldn't continue without Enid, so I had to make a reason for that as well. It's probably really confusing, because, well, you don't know the reason why. It's a long story... that you may get to here shortly.

P.S. Sorry for killing you.
