Chapter Sixteen
The Hilltop. Ruined. People were scattering around, grabbing things and running in all directions.
"Carl?" Enid called out, Lori in her arms.
The ground shook again, and Enid toppled over, Lori still in her grasp. Lori fell into the dirt while Enid steadied herself. Enid let out a scream as Enid picked her back up.
"Carl?!" She called again, seeing no one familiar. Finally, she saw Rick running towards her. Anxiety was filling her. "Where's Carl?"
"You have to come with me," Rick said, taking Lori into his arms. "Come on."
"Where's Carl? Is he okay?" Enid asked, standing in the same spot. Not wanting to move.
"Enid, I said come on! I've got Lori. Let's go." Rick demanded harshly, still settling to the name Lori.
"If Carl isn't there, then what's the point? What's the purpose of going to hide out if my own boyfriend, father of the baby, isn't there?" Enid cried, her head bobbing with thoughts.
"Carl is fine," Rick said after licking his teeth. "Now follow me."
And the two ran as the ground shook beneath them fiercely, pants for breath were heard, people turning, dying, being killed. Enid was about to approach the small building that Rick was leading her to, when suddenly, it felt like the world paused. She watched as Rick opened the door and handed the baby to someone, he turned back out to help her.
Enid looked to her left and saw a heard of Walkers coming towards her.
"Is this all?" Enid whispered.
"Enid, come on! Carl's here! Come on." Rick said, directing Enid towards the building. "They are going to kill you, come on!"
"It's Walkers..." Enid whispered solemnly.
Soon, Carl was at the doorstep. He felt water droplets scan his face, and soon they were pouring. Growling noises were coming faster.
Enid only stood in the middle of it all, letting the wind scratch her skin barely and rip its way through her hair. Her lips pierced, her heart full of decision and determination.
"Carl, I don't want to be here."
"What?" Carl asked, his heart skipping a beat.
"I don't want to do this anymore." Enid said.
"You have a baby!"
"Lori? She's yours, Carl." Enid said, her eyes falling. "She's all yours now. Full custody. Aren't you happy?"
"Enid! I will never be happy in this world without you!"
Enid's eyes became bleak as she watched the walkers nearing her, she turned to face Carl and gripped a knife in her hand.
"B... but I don't know how to face it," she said, rain pouring onto her skin. "How to face the world."
"No one does!" Carl said.
Enid frowned.
"But look at us!" Carl said, and Enid's eyes opened in fear. "Look! It's been seven years, but guess what? We're here! We made it this far! We made it in a world where humans turn into monsterous cannibals and eat each other! Kill each other! Love the flesh of each! But look right here, right now! You can become one of those, or come with me. Join us. In being survivors. Because you made it this far for a reason, Enid. We made it this far."
Enid's heart skipped a beat as the Walkers were only feet away. She clutched the knife, and leaped forward into Carl's arms, who fell back onto the floor. Rick shut the door.
Enid grabbed onto Carl and took him in for a big hug, millions of sobs exhaling from her throat as she struggled to remain calm as her grasp tightened every second. Every second the sobs became louder.
Carl hugged her back and made sure the grasp was tight enough to reassure her everything was okay.
But in reality, what the hell had just happened?
