Chapter Seven
It had been a week since the news, and Enid hadn't handled it well. She said everything was her fault, about how she got pregnant in the first place knowing it wouldn't work out. But somehow Maggie had survived it. She wanted to survive it, too.
Her stomach had healed a little, but her leg was still in the need of some serious healing. The first steps she took were only able because of Carl, who helped her walk around.
Enid wanted to tell the rest of the group about the miscarriage, but Carl didn't want anyone to know. He didn't want there to be anything else to make anyone have grief. Especially with the Ron burden still on his shoulders. He hadn't told Enid yet, but one day she brought it up.
They were sitting on her bed, just talking to each other with small words.
"Did Ron go back to Alexandria?" She asked. There was anger in her tone, but her eyes sparkled for the answer.
"I... I don't know. I haven't seen him around much," Carl said shrugging, knowing he was lying. "Why?"
"I don't know. He just seemed so.... angry with me, ya know? I don't like him, but I should at least say sorry." Enid said.
"Sorry? Sorry for what? You didn't do anything to him!" Carl said, then mumbled, "If anyone I should be saying sorry."
"Why's that?" Enid asked, her weak voice turning into a soft whisper as she laid her head on Carl's shoulder.
"I dunno. I was a jerk, I guess." Carl said, not even thinking about bringing up how he killed Ron only a week ago.
"Hey, you weren't a jerk," Enid said placidly. "If anyone, I was the jerk."
"How's that?" Carl asked.
"I knew I wasn't ready to have a kid. You weren't ready. We both weren't ready. This is a hell of a world we're living in, huh?" Enid said, and Carl nodded. "I should never have had sex with you...." she whispered.
There was a small silence as Enid snuggled closer to Carl and wrapped her arm and his.
"I'm sorry..." she said.
"D.. don't apologize. I... I wanted this baby." Carl said.
"You did?"
"Yeah. I was excited. I was going to apologize, but then Ron shot you-" Carl covered his mouth automatically, and Enid slid off his side.
Her eyes met his, they were filled of concern and hatred.
"He what?!"
"He shot you," Carl said, feeling uncomfortable for bringing it up.
"It's his fault....? He killed the baby?"
"He did."
"That son of a bitch!" Enid screamed, trying to get up from the bed but falling to the floor. Tears escaped her eyes as she managed to stand, her grip on the nightstand.
Carl ran to her and tried to help her walk, but she denied him.
"I'm going to kill him." She said.
"Enid, no! Please...... don't go out there." Carl said, knowing he would have to admit soon.
"Why? I can handle myself!"
"Enid..... you don't have to kill him. He's already dead."
"What do you mean....?"
"I killed him..." Carl whispered. "I killed him and I left him. I'm sorry."
Enid didn't feel grieve, she wasn't upset any longer. She felt happy in some sort of way, but she couldn't tell how nor why.
"Carl...."
"Please don't be mad, Enid. I did it for us." Carl said, his eyes still locked in Enid's.
"It's... it's okay." Enid said. "Can you help me to the bed?"
Carl paused. He rushed over to her direction and lifted her off her feet. Pain rose in her stomach but she let out a chuckle, despite the pain she was in, he was so nice to her.
She was sat down, and that's when burning pain came again.
"Ow, shit! Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!" She cried, holding her stomach tightly.
"Enid? What's wrong?!" Carl asked.
"Contractions..." Enid whispered through pain. "Carl, I'm having contractions!"

Hope you all enjoyed this chapter! I wanted a lot of sweet and gentle(ish) dialogue from Carl and Enid because we haven't got much yet. Anyway, I feel like this story is too predictable, and I want to change things up. I don't want it to be too predictable because I want some surprises here and there! Hope this surprise was big enough! (That sounded so wrong in so many ways) XD
