Chapter Eighteen

Carl walked into the room only moments later, afraid of the answers he would here. But when he looked, Enid wasn't there.

He felt a sharp twist in his stomach as he looked left to right, left to right, over and over again. Until he spotted light coming from the right side of the room. He moved the vines caking over, and revealing a small window that was open. His heart sank.

Step. Step. Step. Step. Enid's boots slammed against the ground, rain poured down on her face but she could care less. The wind was strong, blowing the water into her eyes and nose. But she kept moving swiftly. She had to reach them. She had to reach the Saviors.

Enid came to a stop at a tree, with the words written: JSS. She sighed, and slowly touched her fingers to the scratched bark, rowing her fingers over it carefully. Then she took off running through the woods, leaving the letters alone in the cold breeze.

"Where could she have gone?" Rick asked, while looking at everyone else. They looked extremely uninterested in engaging in the conversation. All except Sasha, who had this warm, fierce look in her eyes.

"We mentioned the Saviors," she said. "Enid said she knew about them. Maybe she's trying to escape from them? Maybe that's why she came to Alexandria?"

"No, it couldn't be," Carl said. "Enid came to Alexandria almost a year ago. The Saviors weren't around then."

"They weren't around us," Rosita said, her arms folded. "Who knows about all the other people out there?"

Carl's eyes widened in fear. "What if..."

"Don't say it," Rick said, knowing the words next to come.

"What if Enid was part of the Saviors?"

Enid knocked on what seemed to be the front door, and what she had remembered herself going through sometimes.

The door slammed open.

"Well, well. Who do we have here? Little Enid, back from the graves. We thought you died long ago." A girl said. She had rough, dark skin and bright blonde hair that was all shaved off except a couple strands on the right.

"Where is Negan?" Enid demanded harshly, causing the woman to step back. "I have no time for games, Cassandra."

Cassandra grinned. "Where he always is."

Enid nodded and stepped inside, she was expecting less of a warm welcome. Even though she felt bad for denying the comfort from Cassandra, who she highly liked back then, she had to. She had to find Negan. She had to find him and set things right.

"We'll split up," Rick demanded, making sure everyone agreed. "Eugene, Eric, you two will stay here. We'll need you both in case the Saviors come. You two can handle yourselves, right?"

"Yes," Eric said, but Eugene froze.

"Okay. Rosita, Daryl, Aaron, you three-"

"Rick!" A voice boomed, all heads turned to face Aaron. "Rick, we're not doing this."

"She's a little girl out there." Rick said, getting his face up in Aaron's. "Aaron, you're a good guy. You know what's right."

"How is she going to help the team at all? What has she done for us?" Aaron asked, his eyes meeting Eric's. They were full of fear.

"She's just a damn kid," Daryl said. "A damn kid that we're going to find." A thought struck through Daryl as he spoke, one reminding him of Sophia. Sophia, Carol's young daughter who had run away in the woods and gotten bit by a Walker. Rick nodded.

If only Carol were here to help, she would be the same way as Daryl. Think about Sophia. Even though Sophia was four years younger than Enid, and didn't have a boyfriend and a baby, she was still a child.

"She can't handle herself out there," Carl said as he handed Eric the baby, Lori. "I'm going."

Rick nodded. "Let's go."
