Awake in Hell by @BrookeNotAshley
BrookeNotAshley write this fascinating and exciting piece which I really enjoyed reading!
Voices. That was the first thing I remembered when I woke up. The voices mumbled but my mind was too hazy to make out what they were saying. On top of that, I couldn't see. This blindingly sharp light above me held my gaze. I realized something else.
'I can't move.'
That single thought sent my mind and heart racing. Panic surged through me. I pleaded with my limbs to move, prayed that if I willed it hard enough, I could escape whatever hell I was in.
'What's going on? Where am I? Why am I here?'
Slowly, the voices became clearer. A shadowy figure leaned in towards me. It was wearing a green mask--the kind you see in hospitals. That small detail sent an icy chill through my blood. I suddenly became aware of the hard surface I lay on. I was sure my cheeks flushed as the masked figure brushed my leg, now aware that I was completely naked.
'Am I dead? I don't feel like I'm dead. I feel fully alive...Are they going to operate on me while I'm awake?'
I caught the glint of a metal object ou of the corner of my eye before I felt it, air seeping into an open cavity of my skin. Some kind of liquid ran down my side onto the table. The doctors, I assumed, sliced from the top of my torso down to my waist, stopping short of a certain part I'd rather keep. I felt the tug as they pulled my skin back to see inside.
'I'm not feeling pain. Thank God. They numbed me before they began the operation. But still, what are they operating on me for? I don't remember being ill or in need of a doctor for the past ten years. I've always been healthy so, why is this happening? Am I truly dead but merely unaware?'
Another glint of metal shone before loud cracks erupted in my ears. I felt my bones protesting and practically screaming in pain. Still, I wasn't in pain myself. Whatever the doctors gave me was enough to numb the deepest parts of my soul. Unable to even flinch, I could only stare up at that blinding light as the doctors rummaged through my body.
'What are they doing? Are they looking for something?'
It felt endless. They dug around inside me for the longest time. Finally, something different happened. I felt a snip and the doctors pulled out a long rope.
'My...intestines? Stop! I need that!'
Sweat dripped onto the table. My body began to burn as it raced to determine and fix the problem. But it couldn't. The doctors had severed my intestines and were pulling them out casually as if it wasn't a piece of human organ.
'How can they not be fazed by this?! It's official. I'm not being operated on...I'm being dissected! While I'm still alive!'
Once the doctors reached the end of my intestines, they snipped again. Tossing the rope-like organ into a metal pan, they continued digging into me. Suddenly, they paused. Leaning in towards me again, the doctor spoke.
"I understand you must be frightened but, what you are about to experience is something we haven't tried before. I hope you will produce effective results."
'They know I'm awake? Why are you doing this to me?!'
A nurse approached the side of the table with a needle. She injected liquid into what I guessed was my IV. A burning, white hot pain crept through every fiber of me. I tried desperately tried to scream, to release some of the pain that threatened to rip me apart. Slightly, my body twitched as I pleaded and pushed my body to move a little.
'If I move, even a little, the pain will subside. It will! It will! Just kill me already! Stop this torture!'
My thoughts ceased to make sense anymore as the vortex of pain ran circles through my body. That stupid white light above me merely shone steadily. My mad brain grew angry, threatening the white light and begging it to stop being so calm. Nothing made sense anymore. That was okay. The casual endless beep of a machine nearby stilled my terrified heart.
'Or perhaps, my heart just stilled?'
The last thing I remembered was that stupid, calm white light. It was so bright and nothing ever crossed my vision again. I was content now as long as that light never dimmed.
