TWENTY-TWO. lennon sunder and emily patterson
LENNON AND Julie sat in Lennon's car as Julie explained her idea.
"I don't know, Julie."
"I mean, I think his mom would like it."
"I know his mom would love it, but I just think we should ask Luke if that's what he wants."
Julie fell back into the passenger seat.
Lennon held a tight lip with one hand on the steering wheel. She knew where Julie was coming from and she knew that Julie meant no harm in what she had planned.
It fell silent and Lennon began to wonder. If she went with Julie she would have to meet Luke's parents. She never thought about meeting his parents. The one time she chose to spy on him was enough. She didn't have any doubts that they were horrible people, she thought the exact opposite actually. His parents seemed like nice people. She just didn't want to have the soulmate thing weighing down on her shoulders if she chose to go through with Julie's plan.
"I'm not saying it's a bad idea. I just... I don't know. Are you sure this is the best idea?"
"Yes. Do you know how happy his mom would be just to get anything from Luke again?"
Lennon sighed, "Fine."
She put the key in the ignition and started her car.
"We're going right now?" Julie asked.
"If you need to make any stops we can go there."
Lennon's nerves were already getting to her. If Julie didn't notice it now she would when they arrived.
With a sigh and a nod, Julie buckled her seatbelt.
To the Patterson's house they go.
THE TWO girls looked out at the house in front of them. Neither one of them ready to get out of the car.
"It's not gonna be awkward." Julie said.
"Right."
Julie looked over at Lennon who was playing with the sleeves of Luke's shirt. She had recognized that it was his as he wore it the other day.
"This is different for you isn't it?" Julie asked.
"Sorta."
Julie hadn't put much thought into Lennon meeting Luke's parents officially. She couldn't imagine what Lennon was thinking.
"Why are you nervous?"
Lennon looked over at Julie, "This isn't exactly how I imagined meeting my dead soulmate's parents. I never thought about it actually."
"You know, I'll never understand the connection you and Luke have, but I do know that Luke would love if you met his parents."
Lennon turned the car off and held her keys in her hand. The Patterson's seemed like nice people. Though Lennon couldn't imagine losing a son ( I mean, she was sixteen ), but she could imagine losing someone she cared about the most.
"I'll meet you up there."
Julie held a tight lip as she nodded and exited the car.
Lennon sighed and pulled Luke's shirt off. If she was nervous to look his parents in the eye, she knew that she couldn't go in there wearing his clothes.
She stepped out of her car and before she shut the door, she opened the glove compartment and grabbed the CD she found that morning.
She shut the car door and headed up the driveway. Luke and Julie coming more into view.
"You too?" Luke asked.
"She needed a ride?" Lennon half-smiled.
Luke looked down at the CD in her hands.
"We were worried."
"You don't have to be."
"You're not alone in this, you know? We know how hard it is when you want to speak to someone you love and can't." Lennon said.
"I don't even know what I'd say to her, even if she could hear me."
"Yes, you do."
"You've already said it." Julie added.
Luke looked between the two of them before slowly pressing on the doorbell.
It didn't take long for the door to open with Luke's father standing on the other side.
"Hello. Can I help you?"
"Hi. Uh, I'm Lennon and this is Julie. We... we believe that you had a son named Luke?"
"Yes, that's right. And you are again?"
"Uh, Lennon Sunder and Julie Molina." Lennon answered, "Your son's band use to play in Julie's family garage?"
"I... I came across this song that he wrote and figured you might be interested?" Julie said.
"Um, well, yes. Uh, please... please come in. I'm Mitch." He stuttered.
He stepped to the side to allow them inside, both greeting him in an almost whisper.
"Can I, um, get you something?"
Once again, in almost a whisper, each girl told him that they were fine.
The two of them walked further into the house. Julie stopped at a picture frame that neared the entrance.
She nudged Lennon's side. Looking, down Lennon smiled at the baby picture of Luke.
"Is this your son?" Julie asked.
"Yeah, that's Luke." Mitch answered, "When he was two."
"Do you have any other children?"
"No."
"Did I hear the doorbell?"
Emily Patterson had a nice smile. Lennon could she the utter adoration for Mitch.
"Hi, hon. Um, this is Lennon and Julie."
She looked over at the two girls. Her focus on Lennon longer than Julie. Something that didn't go past Lennon at all.
"Hello, Lennon, Julie." Emily smiled, "Oh, that's a beautiful sweater."
Julie sent her a small smile and looked down at her sweater.
"Thanks. It's my mom's."
"Julie lives in the house where Luke and the band rehearsed. She was just telling me she found a song that Luke wrote."
"It's a song about a girl named Emily?"
"I'm Emily."
"Then I think your son may have written this song for you."
Julie handed the sheet of paper to Emily as she read it over with Mitch.
Lennon fluttered her eyes shut as the sound of Luke singing filled her head.
She couldn't tell you how this whole "soulmate singing in head" thing worked. She didn't know if he was singing aloud or singing solely in his own mind. Regardless, Lennon could hear it.
She held one of her hands behind her back. Though she couldn't touch her soulmate ( an issues that shouldn't be an issue ) she could "feel" him, you know?
The best way that Lennon could explain it was that it was like putting her hand near a fan. She felt the wind blowing from the fan but she couldn't hold it.
That, to her, is what it felt like "touching" Luke.
So, with her eyes still shut and her one hand behind her back. She waited for a least some type of feeling, touch, whatever you wanted to call it.
She didn't know the story of what happened with Luke and his mother that night he left, she didn't know what the final straw was, and she didn't know how Luke truly felt until she saw him blowing out the candles on his birthday cake.
Lennon wasn't the type to push people into talking about something they weren't ready for. She found herself in situations like that and it sucked. She kept a lot to herself.
She wasn't going to be the one to push Luke to talk about his family life if that was something he wasn't ready for.
She finally "felt" him go through her which caused her to flutter her eyes open to see the Patterson's with tears running down their face.
Emily looked up at the two girls, their faces mirroring the same tear stains as their own.
"Thank you." She smiled.
"Um... You... you have no idea..."
"I write music in the same room that he did, and I can tell you it is a magical, happy place."
Emily smiled as she rested herself against Mitch.
"We know he was only seventeen..." Lennon started, "But he lived doing the one thing he was born to do. Not many people find that, but did. He was lucky."
Luke took a couple of steps away from Lennon and leave the house entirely.
"It was so nice to meet you both." Emily smiled.
The two of them returned it.
As they made their way towards the exit; Emily took a step forward.
"Lennon?"
At the call of her name both her and Julie turned.
"May I speak with you?"
Lennon quickly looked over at Julie and headed her keys off to her.
This is where she began to grow nervous. She hadn't expected anytime to talk about anything alone with his parents, let alone his mother who was just crying about a song he had written for her.
Emily led Lennon towards the kitchen. Each of them taking a seat on the opposite ends of the table.
Emily could practically see the nerves come off of Lennon's body. She held her reassuring smile as she pointed to the CD in her hands.
"What's that?"
Lennon looked down. She had completely forgotten about the CD.
"Um, this CD was at my house, and I couldn't explain why, but it was there for a reason." Lennon answered, "This CD has a recorded version of Luke singing that song for you."
Lennon leaned forward as she handed Emily the CD, "He was very talented."
Emily smiled and gave her a small nod.
"When I was reading that song, it was like he was here." Emily explained, "It's like sometimes I can hear him singing."
Lennon nodded, "I understand. I, sometimes feel like I can hear my mom. So, I understand wholeheartedly."
Emily sat the CD down in front of her. She brought her hands together and smiled at Lennon.
"Do you know how special you are?"
Lennon let out a breathy laugh, "In the sense of?"
"Luke and I might've not had the strongest bond when... when his time came, but, I always know my son." She answered, "He might not be with us now, but when he wasn't with us... he was always with you."
Lennon sighed. She hadn't expected for this conversation to steer this way, or to start at all if she was being honest.
"It wasn't just you and Luke." Emily said, "Mitch and I went through it too. It wasn't singing, but we know Luke was eventually going to start hearing or seeing someone. That, someone, was you."
"How'd you know it was me?"
"A soulmate isn't just a person you'll see yourself romantically involved with. Your soulmate can be your best friend, your sisters, brothers, parents, anyone. I know it's you because my mother's intuition is just the best. Luke was lucky to be able to hear you when he could."
Lennon gave her a small nod and a smile, "I meant what I said. Luke was insanely talented."
"Thank you, for bringing this to me. It's nice to hear his voice again."
"Trust me, I know."
