TWENTY-SEVEN. lennon sunder and luke patterson truly connect

LENNON RESTED her hands against the wheel for a moment.

Tapping her fingers against the wheel as she began to think.

Did she mention how much he meant to her? Did she mention that she would miss him? Did she state clearly that she wouldn't forget him no matter what? Did she totally tell him that she really, really, liked him?

"What took you so long?" Carrie asked.

"I thought I forgot something, but I'm ready to go." Lennon smiled.

She continued to leave her hands on the wheel and tapped them against the wheel again.

She sighed and faced Carrie, "I left my phone in there. I'll back."

"Please hurry."

Lennon rushed back inside the garage. Her braids coming undone from earlier, Luke's jacket still resting on her forearms, and her glasses resting on top of her head.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing was inside the garage. No one, nothing. It was as of no one had been inside at all.

She didn't feel the need to be worried, nothing prompted her to be worried.

She sighed. She brushed her tongue across her teeth and ventured towards the exit.

Turning around, she caught her breath in her throat.

Lennon was scared of most things. Certain bugs, jump scares, confrontation, etcetera, etcetera. She could learn to get over things like that.

It was easy for her to lose trust in someone. She hadn't realized it at first but Caleb really did something to her.

He changed her and for the worst.

Lennon was terrified of what Caleb could do or could continue doing to her.

No one could understand no matter how hard Lennon could try and explain. No one, not even Luke could make Lennon not as scared as she was in the moment.

"Let me reintroduce myself." He smiled bright, "Caleb Covington, and you?"

He stuck his hand out waiting for her to take it.

Now, Lennon couldn't tell if she was breathing hard because she was angry or breathing hard because she was panicking.

Neither emotion was wanted she wanted to feel right now. She wanted to feel like she could tell him off and to leave her alone. She felt herself becoming worried about being alone with him and what he could do to her.

She felt her fist balled tightly and she wrapped her arms around herself.

Caleb's smile never left his face as he moved his hand back to his side.

"You know Lennon, before them, we were close and then it stopped." Caleb sighed, shrugging his shoulders, "I don't blame you. Loving someone makes you do things you never thought you would do."

With every step he took forward, she would take smaller steps back.

"You and Luke are special, you know. A ghost and a human girl. Never seen before, truly, and I mean, truly a special bond you two have. It's almost like someone picked him from the bunches and wanted him to protect you."

He was trying to make her speak. His way of doing it was pretty flawed. She was scared, terrified even. Why would she even open her mouth to speak to him?

He didn't realize how scared she was though. She didn't even realize how scared she was.

She put a lot of herself out there to tell Caleb, mind you, a person she trusted, about how she felt. Believe it or not, Lennon thought he gave her good advice.

How do you now act towards a person who you completely lost trust in and could barely look them in their eyes?

"Let me ask you something, Lennon. Once's he's gone; what are you going to do with yourself? Your soulmate is gone and you're back to square one. Feeling like you're alone."

She could've sworn that words left her mouth, but they didn't. Lennon still stood her shaky ground, fist balled, arms wrapped around herself, and dead silent. Letting Caleb say whatever he wanted to her and nothing was stopping him.

"Life goes on. At least, your life goes on. Lennon, I'm only trying to help. Luke is a ghost and you're... you are special. I mean, you can see me. I'm nothing to you now."

He wasn't wrong. At this point, any chance of salvaging what once was, was deemed impossible.

He could keep twisting her mind and thoughts but nothing was going to forget what he did to her. What he did to just get some ghost to play in a band.

To Lennon, Caleb Covington was nothing to her. Expect, he was. He was something and it terrified her.

"Just a thought. Just in case you have another run-in with someone new."

With that, he was gone.

Lennon's hands balled into fists as she let her arms drop to her sides and let out a giant breath she hadn't realized she was holding.

She shut her eyes for a moment to try and collect herself. Her heart felt like it going to break from her chest.

She rested her back against the grand piano and began muttering nonsense to herself to try and calm herself down.

She soon felt two hands holding her upper arms and she instantly became tense.

Carrie let go once she realized the state Lennon was in.

In Carrie's eyes, Lennon was just fine literally minutes ago. She didn't know what could've caused Lennon to be in a state of panic in a matter of minutes.

Carrie had seen her father go through a state of panic before and she knew how to talk him down from it, but Lennon was different than her father.

Lennon held her eyes shut and stopped muttering. She took one final deep breath in before opening her eyes.

"I always thought Casper was a good movie." Carrie said, "I hadn't really bothered to see it before I met you and my favorite character is the evil blond lady. Do you know her name?"

Carrie watched with careful eyes as Lennon's eyes burned with tears in them. She could hear Lennon breathy heaving through her nose.

"It's like on the tip of my tongue." Carrie said softly.

"Carr... Carrigan."

Carrie nodded, "Mhmm. I like Carrigan. She reminds me a lot of myself." She joked, "What about you? Who's your favorite character?"

Lennon swallowed, "Kat. I... I like her a lot."

"She reminds me of you sometimes."

"I also... I also really like Casper."

Carrie smiled, "I've should've known."

Lennon nodded slightly, her breathing not as deep as what it once was.

"I remember looking at the movie and I thought it was so dumb because my best friend liked it, I watched it. Then I realized I was watching the wrong one." Carrie confessed.

Lennon let out a small laugh through the nose.

"You're doing good, Lennon."

She took one final deep breath and looked at Carrie.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize. It happens."

Lennon took one hand and wiped the sides of her face. She held one hand over her eye, another deep breath escaping.

"I'm okay."

Carrie nodded, "Do you still wanna go? I'm such Julie would understand if you didn't."

"A drive could help. I can't drive though."

"It's fine." Carrie smiled, "Are you sure you're okay before we leave?"

Lennon nodded, "I'm okay."

Carrie gave one final nod Lennon's way, before resting a hand on Lennon's back and guiding the both of them to Lennon's car.

Soon, they arrived at the Orpheum. It wasn't packed just yet but it was a sold-out show. It was bound to be full sooner it later.

Carrie and Lennon sat in the car for a moment.

"How'd you know how to do that?" Lennon asked.

"My dad sees a therapist. I've learned a few things."

"Does it help?" Lennon asked, "Seeing a therapist?"

"It's different for everyone." Carrie answered, "People see therapists for different reasons."

"My dad tried to make see a therapist when my mom died." Lennon said, "I said no at first, but then I started crying in my sleep so I just went."

"Did it help?"

Lennon nodded, "I think so. I just one day stopped going, but I remember a lot of things from therapy, like talking to my the private room."

Carrie watched as Lennon held her hands together and her thumb rubbing against the palm of it.

Lennon brushed a few loose hairs behind her ear, "I can't thank you enough for what you did back at Julie's."

"You don't have to thank me at all."

Lennon held a small smile as she leaned over and hugged Carrie.

Pulling apart after a minute, Carrie smiled at Lennon, "Ready to head inside?"

Lennon nodded and unbuckled her seatbelt, waiting for Carrie to follow her actions.

Lennon sent Carrie one last smile before heading towards the back of the Orpheum.

She watched as Lennon showed the security her badge and allowed her inside. Once out of sight, Carrie made her way in through the front entrance.

IT HAD grown dark out and just as expected plenty of people came to the Orpheum that night.

Lennon was focused on braiding three tiny braids in Julie's hair as Julie kept reapply lipgloss.

Julie sat the tube down for what felt like the twentieth time and shifted her eyes up towards Lennon.

"Why do you like doing my hair?"

Lennon shrugged her shoulders, "I don't know. I use to do my mom's hair lot. Whether it was dying it or braiding it. It was falling again anyway, so she just let me do it."

Julie felt a small smile grow on her face as Lennon made the final braid on her hair, threading the blue string through the braid.

"My dad tried growing his hair out but, I liked doing her hair more."

She ran her fingers through Julie's hair to get any other knots and such out of her hair before Julie picked up the tube of lipgloss again.

Julie shifted her eyes towards Lennon's wrist. She furrowed her brows and only stared.

The stamp on her arm had faded. Lennon hadn't realized it, but it was definitely not as pigmented as it used to be.

Julie on the other hand hadn't even realized Lennon had the stamp in the first place.

She didn't know how long she's had it or what it did to her, but knowing how it affected the guys, she could only assume the worse.

Lennon's sleeve fell and covered the stamp as she removed her hand from Julie's hair.

"Done." She smiled softly.

Julie paused for a moment as she looked at herself in the mirror.

"Thanks, Lennon." She smiled, "For the record, I really like when you do my hair.

Lennon held her hands together and held a smile on her face. She nodded slightly as a sign of appreciation.

Soon, the door opened and Flynn along with a backstage man walked inside the dressing room.

"Holograms are good to go, boss." Flynn smiled.

"Best roadie ever."

"I'll be back in a few minutes to walk you to the stage."

Julie thanked him and he made his way out.

"You see this backstage pass?" Flynn asked, "I had sushi with Ryan Ross!"

"Good for you. I threw up in the car on the way here."

"And you still look amazing." Flynn complimented, "I made friends with the tech crew. You're gonna love what we have planned. The guys are here, right?"

"I haven't seen them."

"Wait. You don't think they changed their minds and took Caleb's offer, do you?"

"It was the last thing they wanted." Lennon answered.

Julie quickly glanced over at Lennon

"You're gonna kill it." Flynn reassured, "We should get some snacks."

As Julie and Flynn sat on the couch, Lennon waited behind still holding her hands together.

"Lennon, you okay?"

She nodded, not bothering to figure out who ask the question, and joined the two on the couch.

They were fine. The guys were gonna be fine and Lennon had to keep telling herself that.

WHAT FELT like hours had only been a few minutes when another knock hit the door; the backstage man telling Julie that it was time for her to go.

"Just a second." Julie replied.

She stepped away from the vanity and towards the two girls sitting on the couch.

"Somethings wrong. The boys were getting those jolts pretty bad as I was leaving." Julie said, "And they wouldn't stand me up again. They must have run out of time."

Lennon sat near Flynn, still holding her own hands as the sounds of a guitar running through her head. Not truly knowing if it was him or just the Orpheum itself.

"I'm so sorry, Jules."

"They didn't cross over. They're gone. And I didn't even get to say goodbye."

Hypothetically, if they were truly gone, what was Lennon supposed to do?

Looking down at her arm, the stamp still stood. She brushed her hand over it and it still stuck.

She hadn't notice Julie out of the room and Flynn following out after her.

She sighed. Standing from her spot and headed out into the audience of the packed place.

She finally found where Carrie was sitting, her father sitting directly beside her.

Lennon held a tight smile and sent Carrie's father a small.

"Can we talk?"

If ( hypothetically ) Luke was forever gone and Lennon never got the opportunity to tell him how she felt, she wasn't gonna let another person slip away.

Carrie furrowed her brows, nodding slowly, and followed Lennon towards a quieter place of the Orpheum.

Lennon was still somewhat shaken up by what had happened earlier and still kept her hands to herself.

Carrie and Lennon had gotten very close. Closer than what Lennon thought and closer than what Carrie had expected.

"This probably isn't the best time to tell you how I truly feel about you but I think I just lost a very important to me and I didn't get to tell them how I felt, so I'm this doing now because... you are very important to me."

Carrie turned her head slightly to the right, "You're not gonna say you hate me now, are you?" She asked, "Because that would be embarrassing."

"No." Lennon answered, "Uh, the opposite actually." She smiled.

She sighed before continuing, "My mom was my best friend and I never got to say goodbye or how much I loved her. Now, my soulmate and I probably aren't gonna be... talking for a while and I never really told him how I felt and I know I'll regret that for a long time."

Carrie furrowed her brows, but she didn't bother to interrupt her.

"All of that to say that I don't want to keep losing people and not telling them how I feel. So, Carrie, I want to tell you that regardless that if we're friends for years on end, that I love you and that I care about you a lot, and what you did for me today is something I'll be forever grateful for."

Carrie held a tight smile. She was still very wary of Lennon's state from before. She stuck her arms out, subtly asking for the okay.

Lennon smiled back and pulled Carrie into an embrace.

"I love you too."

"Good." She laughed, "It would be embarrassing if you didn't."

Lennon pulled from the embrace first and looked back down at her arm.

The stamp, while slightly faded, was still on her arm. Burning in the spot every now and then.

She brushed her thumb over it as Carrie began speaking to her.

"Do you want it off?"

Lennon quickly glanced up before looking back down at her arm, "Yeah, but I don't think it's coming off anytime soon."

Carrie grabbed Lennon's arm, taking a wet-wipe from her bag, and rubbed it against her arm.

Lennon watched as the ink on her arm had transferred to the wipe. Just like that, the stamp was gone.

This could mean many different things to Lennon. It could mean that the guys were actually gone or it could mean that she could've simply wiped away the stamp long ago.

She (as much as she wanted to) didn't think the second option was plausible.

She sighed as she moved her eyes from her arm to Carrie. A small smile on her face.

"Thank you."

SOON JULIE had made her way on stage.

Flynn and Lennon both backstage as Julie spoke about how she was detecting her performance to her mother and the guys.

She placed the microphone back into the holder and took a deep breath before playing.

The sounds of drums were faint, but became louder and louder and soon both Reggie and Alex appeared on stage.

No Luke in tow.

Flynn quickly turned around and faced Lennon.

"You have to bring him back."

Lennon quickly shook her head, "I don't think that's how it works."

"You and Julie are obviously connected to all of them somehow someway, but you and Luke are soulmates. There's not going to be a connection strong than that."

Flynn grabbed a microphone from one of the lonely speakers from backstage.

"It doesn't hurt to try." Flynn said.

Lennon grabbed the microphone from Flynn, holding it with both of her hands. She stood a little closer to the stage, still out of view for the crowd.

Flynn could tell Lennon was nervous. She approached her from behind and held her shoulder.

Lennon instantly felt her shoulders get tense and quickly tried to relax knowing that it was just Flynn.

"You've got this."

She closed her eyes as she held the microphone close to her mouth, taking a deep breath, and tried calming her nerves down by talking to her.

From the corner of her eye, Carrie saw Lennon and Flynn with Flynn holding on to Lennon's shoulders and a microphone in hand.

She furrowed her brows and watched her friend from the corner of the stage.

Lennon could hear the sounds of his guitar and that was her sign to start singing.

"And it's one, two, three, four times."

Every time he would appear on stage, he would just as quickly flicker out.

"That I'll try for one more night."

Julie, Alex, and Reggie looking to their right, seeing Lennon singing into the microphone and back to their left to see Luke flashing on and off stage.

"Light a fire in my eyes."

His voice rang loud throughout the venue. An uproar of applause and cheers as Luke finally appeared on stage.

Lennon held a small smile on her face, holding the microphone close as Luke looked at her briefly and began singing with the band.

Reggie finally got to hear Lennon sing.

Soon the song came rolling to an end and all four stood at the edge of the stage. Luke took one final glance back at Lennon.

She held a tight lip smile and waved at him. Whether it was a sign of goodbye, see you later, hear you later, whatever it meant, he sent her a small smile back before facing the crowd before him, bowing with the band and disappearing from the stage along with Alex and Reggie, leaving Julie alone.

LENNON HAD made it home. She didn't bother hanging out with Julie or Carrie after the venue.

She did manage to convince Carrie that she was okay to drive home alone.

Lennon opened the front door and ventured upstairs to her dads' room, knocking on the door softly until she heard the sounds of him talking. She opened the door and saw as he sat at the small desk in his room.

He turned his chair around and faced her. A smile placed on his face, "How was it?" He asked.

She stood at the doorframe, her weight shifted to one side, "It was good. Dabbled in some... singing tonight."

"You didn't?"

"But I did." She smiled.

"I totally would've gone if I knew you were gonna do all that."

"Just helping a friend."

"Must be one hell of a friend to make you sing in front of a crowd like that."

She nodded, "He's something special."

He watched as her demeanor changed, "Everything okay?"

Lennon drew closer into the room and sat in the chest in front of her father's vacant bed, "I... had a panic attack today."

"Why didn't you call me?"

"I left my phone somewhere, but Carrie was there and she helped me."

"Are you okay?" He asked.

"I wasn't then but am now." She answered, "But, I think it's best if I go and see a therapist."

Her father nodded, "I can get that set up."

Lennon held a tight smile as she stood, hugging her father who sat in the chair. Her cheek resting on top of his head, "Thank you."

The two of them stayed like that for a minute or so before she declared that she should probably hit the hay for tonight.

"Len," He called, "You left your movie playing. I didn't want to go in there and stop it."

She furrowed her brows and sent a nod his way before heading to her room.

Lennon slowly opened her bedroom door. She didn't remember leaving the movie on, but she's done it before, so it wouldn't shock her.

The movie always started on its own if it was left on the main menu too long. So, it really didn't shock her when she looked at the scene playing before her.

"Can I keep you?"

She was so focused on the movie. Most likely to take away from never seeing her soulmate again, but regardless she was focused on it.

"Can I keep you?" She heard in her ear.

She held hands over her face as she shouted.

"That was stupid, I'm sorry." He apologized, "You know I thought it would be funny, not funny in a joking way, just- sorry."

Luke reached out, grabbing her forearms gently. Her hands still rested on her face and he felt her tense up in his touch.

He moved her hands from her face and looked down at her. Her eyes still shut tight.

"Lennon?"

She opened her eyes slowly and flickered them towards him.

She let herself ease up and stared back up at him.

"Hey." He smiled.

"What are you doing here?"

Luke smile slightly, "You know you've got a great voice and you used it to help me tonight. I told you, you were talented."

Lennon quickly shook her head, "I'm not doing this with you. Not- not right now." She balled her fist hitting his chest, "You need to go."

He could tell that she was in some type of distress, just like Julie, and at the previous moment so was he. He, along with Alex and Reggie, poofed into the garage earlier he didn't think he was gonna see Lennon again, let alone touch her. Something she had failed to realize that she could do.

He let go of her forearms and rested his hands on her face, pulled her face closer to his. Her cheeks slightly pushed up.

"I'm fine." He whispered, "You're fine. We're fine."

"I just... I don't understand. Why didn't you cross over?"

"I don't know why we didn't cross over. All I know is that Caleb's stamp is gone, we could all hug Julie, and Reggie was nonstop talking about how talented you are." He smiled, "Can we talk about that?"

Lennon knew Luke was trying to calm her nerves. She took a deep breath before nodding.

"Are you okay?" He asked.

"I should be asking if you're okay." She smiled softly.

Luke returned the smile before backing away from her. He did a small spin and held his hands out slightly.

"I'm fine and if I knew any other words for fine I would tell you." He said, "I'm here and I'm with you. That's what matters right now."

"Then yeah. I'm fine." She answered, "I'm... I'll be fine. Today, was a lot for me, but I'll be fine."

He quickly glanced around her body for any sign of injury and couldn't spot anything. He nodded in response.

"I didn't mean to scare you earlier."

Lennon let out a small laugh and wandered over to her laptop to shut it, "I know. Why'd you do it?"

"Because every time I come over and you're watching that movie, he's always in her ear asking can he keep her. So, I didn't and it wasn't as romantic as I thought it would be." Luke answered.

"I always thought it was weird that he asked her that because-"

"Because if someone asked you that you would be freaked out."

Lennon tilted her head slightly and bit her lip, "Yeah. How'd you know that?"

"You told me in a dream."

"Well, I wasn't wrong."

The two of them shared a laugh. The only light shining in the room was from the window.

Lennon turned slightly to close the curtains and turn on a lamp, but she felt Luke tugging at her hand.

Though she tensed, it wasn't because she was scared, it was because it had settled in that the two of them could touch again.

"Hey." Luke smiled, pulling Lennon close to him. "I love you."

Lennon's chest tightened. Her cheeks heating up as she and Luke stared at each other.

She figured saying I love you would be different hearing or song to Luke because they were soulmates.

"I've made you nervous."

"Yeah, but a good nervous I guess." She whispered, "You don't have to ask."

"It would be informal if I didn't."

"Is this Luke Patterson because when has he ever cared about being formal?"

"Your taking jabs at my heart, Lennon."

As she let out a breathy laugh Luke lowers his lips to her. At first, it's only a brush of lips, then a press against hers.

Soft and gentle. Both of them are hesitant to deepen the kiss so their lips only press against each other tenderly.

His hand reaches for hers, lacing their fingers together.

When she pulled away he was smirking and she knew he was about to be annoying again.

She held a tight smile, taking her fist and hitting his chest.

"You don't know what to do with yourself, do you?" He asked.

She shook her slowly and rested it on his chest. The small smile never leaving her face.

"I love you too, by the way." She muttered against his chest.

Luke smiled, wrapping his arms around her and resting his head on his chin on top of her head.

Lennon and Luke were golden.

For now anyway.

THE NEXT day, Lennon found herself in the kitchen, her head resting against the island as her legs swung slightly back and forth. The movie playing in front of her as she wrote songs down in her journal.

Lennon had been with the guys the majority of the day as Reggie really wanted to praise her in person.

Smiling at the thought as the couple on-screen sang around the piano.

Luke had appeared from behind, holding a piece of paper in his hand. Something he'd been working on for a while and wanted to show her.

He looked up before speaking, seeing his girlfriend? A girl who he really cared about? At the island writing something down.

"What are you doing?" He asked.

"Making a new playlist."

Luke approached the counter, watching the very unfamiliar movie as Lennon followed his eyes, watching the movie.

TOP 100 PLUS SONGS MY BOYFR*END? AND I LIKE
number fifty-seven: you are the music in me
favorite line: "we got the power to say what we feel. connected and real."

She lifted her head from the counter and spun her chair around.

"What's that?" She asked.

He slowly moved his eyes from the movie and on to her, "I wanted to show you something."

The relationship between Luke and Lennon hadn't changed. She was still a little bit awkward and he was a little bit cocky, but they worked. They knew that and they didn't need anyone else to tell them otherwise.

But on the other hand, with Luke thinking everything with fine and Lennon still very wary of her surroundings, they never truly knew who or what was out there to get them.

Because no matter what someone out there wasn't going to like someone else.

Caleb Covington wasn't done and had no plans to stop.
