TWENTY-FOUR. the long awaited father-daughter talk
FRUSTRATION WAS on the top of Lennon's mind.
She just had the opportunity to touch her soulmate and somehow that very sweet, sentimental moment slipped through her hands.
The first touch was something she wouldn't forget. Luke was cold. She remembered that.
She meant what she said. She wasn't angry. She was upset at the circumstances that she was put in. That, no matter the outcome, she was gonna lose an important person, an important group of people.
Though not seen, let alone talked about, she was also close with Alex and Reggie. They talked, they had their moments, they've gotten close.
She was gonna lose them also.
Lennon opened the door of her home. Her back pressed against the door, looking around, no sign of her father being there at all.
She sighed, "Universe, for once, if you choose to be on my side, please, just this one time, please don't let him not hear me."
Lennon's mother had bought a baby grand piano some odd years ago. It hadn't been touched in a year.
Lennon slowly sat down at the piano looking down at the keys. She was hesitant as her fingers touched the keys. She was nervous.
Lennon didn't hate singing. She just didn't sing as often as others and didn't see that being a career that she wanted to pursue. It was a hobby.
Lennon let out one last sigh and rested her hands on the keys.

Lennon didn't remember how loud the piano was, but everything felt natural. The singing on the other hand was different. She hasn't confidently sung in, what felt like forever.
"So, take a look at me now. Well, there's just an empty space." She said softly.
Yeah, she had that moment with Luke, but she wasn't confident in herself then and she definitely didn't have that confidence now that she was alone.
She suddenly stopped as she heard something fall from behind her.
She swiftly turned and saw her father standing there.
He picked whatever he had dropped on the ground and placed it back in its original spot.
Lennon watched his movements carefully and he soon sat down beside her.
He didn't speak. He just sat there and waited for whatever move Lennon was going to make.
She took another deep breath before playing the instrument again.
Lennon felt fine playing any instrument... it was the singing that was hard for her to do. It would have to be a do or die situation for her to belt anything out.
Her mother sang around the house all the time. She never thought about singing seriously after Lennon was born, but her mother way back when would've done anything to be in the spotlight. She was for a while. She had a band and everything, but as time went on, her mother put Lennon before anything.
Her father watched as Lennon easily played the piano. It was like nothing had changed. Like she hadn't stopped playing a year ago.
Her voice didn't go above a whisper as softly sang the lyrics to herself.
"It's the chance I've got to take." She finished, the piano still being played.
She let her fingers gently rest on the keys and the last key rang throughout the house.
Lennon let out a breath and rested her head on her father's shoulder. The two of them sat in a comfortable silence.
"She would've loved that."
Lennon let her eyes flicker up at her father and back down at her hands.
"I know." She said, "I can, uh, talk to you about something?"
Lennon was tired of keeping things from her father. She needed someone, literally anyone to talk to.
"Anything."
Lennon sat up and began playing with the hair tie on her wrist.
"So, I have been... watching this documentary on this girl and she has this soulmate and... it's a very complicated story."
"How complicated is complicated?"
"It's so complicated that her own dad didn't know what was going on." She explained, "She said she was scared of the impossible because that's all her story is... impossible."
"Doesn't seem that impossible."
Lennon closed her eyes for a moment. She didn't know how this whole conversation was gonna go, but at this point, she was in too deep.
"How? Because to me, that would be a very hard relationship to keep up with."
"How?"
Lennon sighed, "How could it not? I mean, that girl is struggling. First, she finds out that she has this soulmate that hears her singing, they meet, they have a great time, but she didn't tell him that they're soulmates and maybe that was a mistake." She explained, "She gets jealous of the relationship he has with someone else and she shouldn't be, but her feelings, you know? He now knows they're soulmates and is fine with it, then the girl starts to feel this wave of sickness, and finally... I paused the documentary cause I was getting sad."
Her father nodded, "She's really going through it, huh?"
"I think so."
"Does she get better?"
Lennon shrugged her shoulders, "I don't know. I stopped it before I could find out."
"I want to know why she's so worried. If she knows they're soulmates and he seems fine with it, what's the big deal?"
He's a ghost. That's the big deal. If Lennon could just say Luke was a ghost without people looking at her like she was crazy then she would be golden.
"He's not here, in a sense." Lennon said, "It's like he can't touch her, no matter how hard he tries."
"Oh, okay. Is it because he's far away?"
She let out a breathy laugh, "He's so far away. Switzerland."
"Mhm, yeah. That's far." He joked, "I still don't see any issues. If they're happy, then what's the issue? Touch isn't the only way you can show you love someone, you know? Yeah, love languages yadda yadda, but honestly I think that if you know that you love them, screw the love language."
"I don't know what love like that is. I know I love you and mom. I even love Carrie, but love like that... I don't know it. I don't know what to feel."
"You? Thought this was about a girl in a documentary."
"Me? Ah, no, not I." Lennon drew a smile, an almost too wide of a smile on her face, "That last thing I said, not me. That's the girl in the documentary. I- I've been caught in my lie."
Her father clasped his hands together as he watched Lennon unfold in front of him. The documentary lie slipping further and further away from her.
"What? Couldn't tell this was about you." He smiled, "You, my Lennon, in love, no! She too young! She's still the baby lemon on the tree."
"You're right. Baby lemon on the tree knows nothing."
Baby lemon on a tree was an ongoing thing. A joke to make Lennon feel more comfortable in a situation. Whether people called her lemon on accident or on purpose, she knew when her father used it, it was to let her know that she had nothing to worry about.
"That girl, in the documentary, of course, shouldn't have to worry about love just yet." Her father said, "She also shouldn't worry about her soulmate finding someone new."
"Why?"
"Because if he cares about her, she would know. Does she know?"
Lennon knew Luke cared about her. That he would do anything to make sure she was okay.
"She knows, but she's still scared."
"That's normal. Love, or liking someone more than normal, is scary, but it's a wonderful thing. You're right. I love you and I love your mother. Two people with an equal amount of importance. Loving your mother was scary."
Lennon furrowed her brows, "Why was loving her scary?"
"I've never experienced it." He answered, "Yeah, I dated people before your mom, but she was her and I, for a lack of better words, was a loser. I only dated in my circle, but your mom was out of this world and out of my league. I needed to step out of my comfort zone to even look her way. I fell for her fast, and that's okay, to like people fast because that's life, Lennon. You know, yolo and all that other slang."
Lennon rolled her eyes with a smile.
"I mean it, whoever that girl's soulmate is, is lucky. That baby lemon in a tree is a good person, a great person. He's lucky. You gotta realize that, Lennon." Her father said, "You're an amazing person to be around. You are always gonna be you. That girl who is shy, speaks when spoken to, and plays the piano like a damn mad man. Lennon, whoever this soulmate is, is lucky to have you."
Lennon held a small smile, "How'd you know when you loved her?"
He didn't have to think about it.
"She kissed me in front of everyone at school. I was like you and really shy. I didn't know if I could hold her hand or even tell she looked pretty without sweating." He said, "But she never made fun of me for it. She never... pushed me to do things I wasn't ready for. She made me feel good about everything I did. I remember when she tried teaching me how to play the big guitar."
Lennon held a tip lip, "They're all... pretty big."
"The one I bought you on your birthday."
"The acoustic?"
"That." He smiled, "And I sucked. And still, to this day, suck. She never gave up on me though. She said, "It's just you and me. Just like it's always been." That was when I knew I really, truly loved her. She made me feel like I was being me."
If it wasn't for Luke, Lennon wouldn't be sitting here with her father right now. Luke changed Lennon for the better. She wasn't a bad person before, but because of him, she stretched her horizons out.
She made new friends, she befriended people she never thought would talk to her, she fell for someone who made her feel like herself.
"I know that girl in the documentary wishes she would've said something earlier, but she didn't have all the answers and she still doesn't, but she figuring it out." Lennon said.
"Didn't you say you haven't finished it?"
She nodded, "Then her story isn't over. She has time to figure things out." He said.
"You're right."
"When am I ever wrong?"
"Mmm, you see how you made a very sweet and sentimental moment between a father and daughter turn very cocky very fast?" Lennon smiled, "Thank you for listening, by the way."
"Thank you for talking to me. It must get really boring listening to me talk about my job. Who wants to hear about a bouncer?"
"I do. If I didn't I wouldn't be sitting here, now would I?"
He smiled and kissed the top of her head, "Love you, kid."
"Love you, too."
"Speaking of work, I've gotta go. You'll be all right by yourself?"
"Yeah, I'll be fine, besides I think someone is gonna call me soon."
"Oh, yeah." He smiled, "I'm gonna meet him. Switzerland or not."
Lennon nodded, "And you will. I promise."
He gave Lennon one last smile before heading out the door.
She sighed and gently played a random tune on the piano.
"You know, I think you should knock before you enter a room."
She looked over her shoulder and saw Luke standing there.
"I know. I'm sorry. I just- I heard you-"
"I know." She softly smiled, "The universe has not been the greatest to us today."
She turned and began playing the piano again. The sounds of "Great" began to play throughout the room.
"You learned it?" Luke asked.
"Yeah, I know flaked on the last couple of performances, so I thought it was only right to learn them."
"That wasn't your fault."
"I know that now, but still. I like your songs, so why not learn them."
Luke smiled softly as he took a seat beside Lennon. The song still being played by the girl.
"How much of the conversation did you hear?" She asked.
"I left after you stopped playing. I didn't want to snoop in a private conversation."
"Boundaries." Lennon smiled, "I'm glad you learned them."
She paused on the piano playing to face him.
"I assume you've figured out a way to cross over."
Luke nodded, "We're gonna play the Orpheum. Julie said she would explain the plan to you."
"Why don't you just explain-"
"Because right now... I don't wanna worry about crossing over. I just... I just wanna be with you."

"You've rendered me speechless, good job." She smiled.
Luke smiled down at her as she began playing "Great" again on the piano.
"Lennon?"
She hummed in response, not taking her eyes away from the keys on the piano.
"I would do... anything to kiss you right now."
She was shocked, to say the least. Her fingers pressing the keys harder than what she had meant to.
Luke noticed as she took her hand away from the keys, her smile began to grow on her face. He knew he put her in a position of awkwardness.
It was the awkwardness in which she grew flustered and didn't know what to exactly say.
"Are you flirting with me right now?"
"Is it working?"
"I don't know. I've never been flirted with before and if I have, I've never noticed."
Lennon looked down in between them. Her hand sitting right through his.
"Tell me about the dreams we share. I would like to know what we've done there."
Luke shrugged his shoulders, "They're not much different than what we're doing right now. We talk there like we do here. The only difference is that we can touch there, but if we do one of us would wake up soon."
"Have we done anything else besides just talk?"
"No, but it's sometimes hard to tell what's real and what's a dream. Like today."
Lennon nodded. Her father was right, there shouldn't be any issues between Lennon and Luke. They were soulmates for a reason. No matter if it was a platonic relationship or something more. Stupid cupid made the two of them soulmates for a reason.
"Luke?"
"Lennon?"
She smiled slightly, "I would do anything... to kiss you right now."
"Are you flirting with me right now, Sunder?"
"I take it back."
Luke let out a breathy laugh and smiled.
But he meant what he said, and so did Lennon.
They would do anything to be with each other.
Even if Luke had to go away to make it happen.
