TEN. at that moment she slipped my mind
THE HOLLYWOOD Ghost Club was not what the three had expected when walking inside.
People everywhere, dancing, talking, doing anything they wanted. Well dressed people all around.
"I don't know about this." Reggie sighed.
"Well, if you get scared, you... you can always hide behind me. I'll be hiding behind Luke." Alex said.
"You guys need to grow up, okay? We're gonna get back at Bobby. He needs to pay for what he did to us."
Alex faced Reggie, "I'm still gonna hide behind him."
Willie, Alex's friend/crush/something, had poofed in beside Luke, a smile placed on his face.
"We're all good."
"Oh, uh, cool." Alex stuttered, "Hey, just so you know, we have, like an hour, because we got a gig with Julie."
"No worries. Let's go."
All around well dressed people. The three boys obviously not prepared for the extravagant hours ahead of them. They could only take in the scenery as two people walked through them.
"Whoa! I thought these people were all going to be ghosts." Reggie said.
"These are all lifers." Willie smiled.
"Oh, uh, lifers are actually-"
"Alive people. I was listening."
"But this is a very exclusive crowd." Willie explained, "Everybody here has, uh, paid a lot to get a sneak peek at the afterlife."
"I always knew rich people did weird stuff like this."
A man wearing a white suit approached them, guiding them to a table as true show was getting ready to start.
"Okay. So who's gonna make us visible so we can confront our old bandmate?" Luke asked.
"Oh no, no. None of these lifers have the power to do that." Willie explained. The sounds of the music becoming more lively, "Oh, but here comes the ghost who does."
"Ladies and gentlemen, back from the dead by popular demand, please welcome Caleb Covington!"
"Welcome, to the party of your dreams!" Caleb smiled, "From the Egyptians to the Druids, to the person sitting next to you, we've all wondered, "Where do we go when that final light is snuffed out?" Allow me to show you."
They couldn't deny it, Caleb Covington was talented. The show itself, very flashy, colorful, everyone dancing around, like magic.
"This is so cool." Reggie smiled.
"Man, dude, I knew I recognized him. He's the guy that bumped into me outside the Orpheum." Alex said.
"Wait. Isn't he that magician dude that died a horrible death doing a trick?" Reggie asked.
"Yeah, I wouldn't really bring that up when we meet him."
"Yeah, but you should come back when he shows one of his movies." Willie said, "I mean, for Titanic, he literally floods the entire place. I mean, the guy has got skills."
"All right, but he can wave his arms and make ghosts visible to lifers?" Luke asked.
"Told you, the guy's got skills."
"So, where'd he go?" Reggie quickly turned around, "Oh wow! Found him!"
"Hello, boys. Caleb Covington. Welcome to the Hollywood Ghost Club. Enjoying the show?"
"Yo, that was... I mean... Did you... Like..." Luke stuttered out.
"I know."
"This is Alex, Luke, and Reggie."
"Yeah, it's really nice to meet you." Alex smiled.
"The pleasure is mine. Nothing warms my heart more than sharing this magic with new friends. Please sit. Sit."
"Uh, thank you for the invite."
"Of course. Of course. Now, my friend Willie tells me that you boys have some magic of your own."
Alex sat in disbelief, "Well... Willie and I? I mean, I wouldn't really call it magic, but, I mean..."
"Oh no, he means your ghost abilities. You know, like, to be seen by everybody when you play with Julie."
"No, totally. Right. No. 'Cause when you said it, I was like, "Is that what he said?" 'Cause..."
"Yeah, but we can't really, uh, wave out arms and do all this magic stuff." Luke explained.
"Well, I've had some practice. Our gifts are so rare, so special. It's not often I come across other spirits who possess similar talents. It's no surprise we found each other."
"Yeah, that definitely..."
"If you'll forgive me, fellas, I gotta go pay the bills, if you know what I'm saying. I'll be back later it chat."
"I love that dude. Please tell me this party's never gonna end." Reggie smiled.
And for them, it felt like it wasn't.
LUKE STOOD with his arms crossed as he listened to Reggie and the other guest talk about Star Wars. Something that Luke let Reggie talk him into watching, a guilty pleasure growing from it.
Reggie left in a huff as he discovered that Han Solo had died in the time that eight movies had been made.
Luke drew his attention back to Willie and Alex. He watched as Willie left from the table, Alex's eyes following him as he left.
"Oh, you got a crush on Willie." Luke smiled.
"What?" Alex questioned, "No. No, man, no. We're just..."
"Alex, I'm happy for you."
"You guys are not gonna believe this, but someone just told me they added a character named Jar Jar." Reggie said in distress, "What's a Jar Jar?"
Caleb Covington, a man with the charming smile approached them, "I take it you boys are enjoying yourselves?"
"Yeah, I mean, you'd have to be insane to have a bad time here." Luke answered.
"Well, entertainment is our specialty. So now, I understand there's something I can help you with."
"Yeah, we hope so. There's an old buddy of ours who ripped us off big time, and we wanna make things right." Reggie explained.
"We wanna look him in the eyes and make him admit what he did to us." Luke added.
"So if you could make us visible, that would be perfect." Alex said.
Caleb looked between the three of them, "Well, sure, I could do that, but we're at a party. Why focus on those who have wronged us when we're among friends? Now, I understand that the three of you are talented musician. I doubt... your dream is to settle the score. No, your dreams are bigger than that! You're like me, born to preform your music in front of sold-out crowds. Please sit. What if I were to tell you, that with a wave of my hand, you could share the spotlight with me... and join my house band?"
"We... we already have a band." Luke said.
"Yes. Yes. But when you're done preforming, you disappear. You cease to exist. No bows, no... no soaking up the applause. No real connection with the audience. Yeah? Here the audience knows what you are, and more importantly, they know how special you are."
"Well, it could be cool to play here." Luke smiled softly.
"Oh, it- it's not just here. We party like this all over the world. Tonight, Hollywood. Tomorrow, Paris. It is... all of your dream come true... forever."
Convincing enough to say the least. Neither Alex, Luke, or Reggie saying anything after.
"Willie mentioned another girl... Lennon."
Luke quickly glanced at Alex. Of course Alex mentioned Lennon, but obviously, never had any bad intentions with it.
Willie had never heard of anyone singing in anyone's head before, so of course with him being curious, he went to Caleb.
Nothing could shock the old man anymore, until this. Not only could this ghost be seen when he was playing with Julie and be seen by Julie twenty-four seven, but he could be seen all the time by Lennon, he could be heard by Lennon in her head and just by singing.
Caleb had only ever heard this story from other ghosts. A ghost having a ghost soulmate. He knew this story because it was his story. Then it wasn't. You would think he would stop doing magic to still be with his soulmate.
Luke quickly looked back at Caleb. He didn't know if he could be any help with this. Caleb had been drawing them in with performing at the ghost club and not with the Trevor situation. He ( and rightfully so ) thought this was a waste of time.
"Uh, yeah. But-"
"You know, your case is special, Luke. Having a soulmate can be fun, but do you think-"
Luke sat back in his chair, "Soulmate?"
Caleb hadn't seen anyone so confused before. Did he not know?
"Yes." Caleb replied, "You and Lennon are soulmates. Connected through music. The fact that you're a ghost and your soulmate is, what I assume, is living, is what makes this special. You're telling me you didn't know? You didn't know that she was your soulmate?"
Luke could only shake his head. He wasn't upset with the news, but he knew this wasn't the best news.
What was Lennon supposed to do? What was he supposed to do? Lennon was a living, breathing, human being, and here he was, dead, a ghost.
That could answer some of his questions. Why he had grown so close to her. Why he wanted to touch her. Why he was always around her.
That also didn't answer some of his questions. Why couldn't he touch her? If they were soulmates, how come he was dead and she was living? How come he could hear her from a different timeline?
Alex and Reggie could only stare at Luke. He visually looked like he was about to explode. They knew he was questioning everything right now. They could see it on his face.
"If my instrument is connected to my soul and I can touch it. How come I can't touch Lennon and she's my soulmate?"
Caleb had answers, but not all questions had a solid answer. He could tell Luke anything and he would probably believe it. Caleb met his soulmate when he was alive and died watching them grow. Watching them move on. Watching them grow out of love with him and in love with another.
Was he going to let Luke Patterson get his "happy ending"? If he wanted this band to play at the ghost club, he wasn't.
"Who knows." Caleb answered, "I have only see this happen with other ghosts. You and Lennon are special."
"Okay, okay. But that doesn't-"
Luke was flustered. He, at this very moment, needed answers. A thousand and one questions now running through his brain. He was in states of confusion, happiness, and soon distress if his questions didn't receive answers.
Caleb stood from his chair. He knew what he was doing with Luke now, he just needed time.
"You boys should try the sliders. They're to die for."
"W-W-We can eat?" Reggie asked.
"Here you can."
With a snap of his fingers, plates stack with food landed in front of them. This might draw them in.
Caleb probably should've waited to tell Luke about Lennon because, yes, the food was something Luke could die to have again, but Luke wasn't going to leave Lennon now, but Caleb knew that.
HOURS. HOURS had gone by and the boys were still stuffing their faces with whatever food was sitting in front of them.
More dancing, more singing, more food, more everything. They were having the time of their lives.
Luke, now dancing with one of the twins. A bright smile of his face as the dancer spun into him. He finally broke free from her as his eyes landed on the clock.
"Twelve? How... how'd that happen?" He questioned. The dancer trying to pull him back in, he gently held her arm, "I'm sorry."
He faced Reggie, who was just as lost in the dance with the twin as he was.
"Dude, we lost track of time..."
"Not right now, man."
Luke lifted Reggie from his waist, pulling him away from the dancer, "Reggie!"
"Hey, what the..."
"We were supposed to be at Julie's school at nine."
"Oh shoot. That's right. Maybe we can still make it. Where's Alex? Alex, we forgot..."
"Up here."
The two of them looking up, the two of them saw him swinging back and forth on one of the rings.
Alex poofed down. The three of them rushing towards the exist, only to be stopped by Caleb.
"Gentlemen, what's the rush? The party's just getting started, and you have an eternity, after all."
"You know that girl that can see us? We sort of bailed on her." Reggie explained, "There's this dance at her school, and her friend Flynn is a super cool DJ, like, and Lennon-"
Alex cut him off, "I don't think he has an eternity to hear the story."
"Basically, we're late for a gig." Luke said.
"But what about my offer?"
"It's very cool of you, Mr. Covington, but like I said, we already have a-"
"A band of your own. I understand. If you ever wanna come back and fix that little problem with your friend, the Hollywood Ghost Club is always open."
"Yeah, man, we'd love to come back." Luke smiled.
"Ah! Music to my ears."
Shaking each of their hands. The boys felt a burning sensation on their wrist.
"Oh, it's just a little club stamp. Until next time."
It was obvious to Caleb that they weren't going to join his band anytime soon. So the next best option was to go for someone who would allow at least one of them to consider to do so.
