FIVE. do i make you nervous

LENNON NEVER went to her father for advice. She did when it was a last resort but she never really asked him for help. She pretty much relied on the internet and whatever her mother had brought up in years prior.

It wasn't like Lennon could tell her dad about having a soulmate or the fact that he was dead. Even if she wanted to, she didn't know how to.

Overlooking that, Lennon had gotten home from school. Her dad sitting in the kitchen, his laptop opened and, from the looks of it, was working.

"Hey." Her father smiled.

Lennon smiled his way and opened the refrigerator to grab a snack and soon as she shut it, Luke stood there smiling down at her, causing her to slightly jump, that movement not going past her father.

"Everything all right?"

She quickly recovered and faced her father, "Yeah, just got the chills."

She stood on the other side of the island, Luke following her steps as the two of them propped their arms against it.

"How was school?" Her father asked.

Luke continued to smile, "Yeah, how was school?"

Lennon held a tight smile and glanced up at Luke, "It's was good, you know, as good as school can get."

"Well, that's great to hear." Her father replied, "Anything else going on?"

"Yeah, tell him about me yet?" Luke asked, "Bet that's a conversation... imagine it. You telling your dad about how you've finally met the voice in your head."

"Other than the headache I'm getting and the chemistry homework I have to do. Nothing exciting has happened." Lennon answered.

Luke pouted, "I think I'm an exciting person."

"Right. Study, study, study. Get to it. I'll be down here for a while before heading out for tonight."

Lennon nodded, "Have fun with your stuff."

"Right back at 'cha."

Lennon grabbed her snack from the table and headed upstairs. Luke following behind her.

The two of them entered her room and she threw her bag on the ground.

"Boundaries." She said.

"You want to talk about boundaries?" Luke questioned, "You've been invading my head for months."

"Yeah, and you've been singing in my head since the start of the morning. I've got school you know? Where I'm supposed to listening to the teachers and seeing if I know the answers to the questions, but the only thing I can focus on is you singing."

"It's okay if you're thinking about me." Luke replied.

Lennon rolled her eyes, but he wasn't wrong. She had, and probably always, thought about Luke even before she knew who he was and now with him in her life ( for as long as that may be ) and her knowing about "love language" she honestly didn't know what to truly do with herself.

She opened her backpack to grab her homework.

"Is that all you ever do?" Luke asked, "Homework?"

"I mean, I go to school and I don't too many after school activities... so, yeah. It's all I do."

"I didn't come all the way here to watch you do homework. I came because we, for one, need to figure this singing in heads thing out, and two, do you know how to write a song?"

"Why would I know how to write a song?"

"Are you not in the music program at school like Julie?"

"Yes, but that doesn't mean I know how to write a song? Why are you asking?"

Luke sighed, "They won't let Julie back into the music program, so I thought I would give her this song to show them that they made a mistake."

Lennon took the paper from him and on top was the word, Bright. She read it over and smiled.

"It sounds good. I don't understand why you need me for anything."

Luke looked around her room. He finally found the objects he was looking for and sat on her bed with them.

"Just play it with me. I just want to make sure it makes sense before I give it to her." He held her ukulele in his hands and pushed the keyboard closer to her, "Plus this gives us the chance to actually hear each other sing without that weird echo."

You know those Youtube videos where you could look up any song and add the words "empty area" behind it... that's what it sounded like to the both of them.

Lennon sighed before joining Luke on her bed.

Before either one of them could start, the door creaked open. Luke quickly dropped the ukulele and her father stepped inside.

"Hey, didn't mean to bother you-"

"You're fine." She reassured.

He softly smiled, "I was just wondering if you had work later on?"

"No. I work this weekend."

"Good to know... I'll leave you to it."

Lennon watched his every step as he shut the door and made his way back downstairs.

"You have a job?" Luke asked.

"Yeah, I work at this coffee shop. They have these music nights every so often, so, it's an experience."

Lennon pulled the keyboard closer to her and waited for Luke to start, as she didn't know the melody.

Once she heard it she got into the groove of playing it on the keyboard.

"Okay, now add the vocals."

That's when she pressed harder on the keys before pulling her hands away. She held a tight smile on her face and looked up at him.

"Why'd you stop?" He asked, "Do I make you nervous?"

She sighed, "No."

Yes.

"Look, it's just you and me. That's how it's been for months, right? Just you, me, and the music. Just like it's always been. The only difference is that we can see each other. You're talented Lennon. I know that."

She took one last glance at Luke before restarting the song, actually preparing herself to sing the words.

"Sometimes I think I'm falling down. I wanna cry, I'm calling out. For one more try to feel alive."

Luke smiled as she sang. Definitely different than hearing it in his head all the time. Definitely different than him having to imagine the girl who's voice now had a face. A good different.

They soon concluded the song. Luke put the ukulele down and went in to shake Lennon's shoulders and praise her, but quickly put his hands back down as he remembered that he couldn't touch her.

"See! Talented!" He smiled, "You just gotta believe in yourself."

She softly smiled back and grabbed the two instruments and put them back in their original spots.

"As fun as that was, I'm pretty sure you'll be wanting to give this to Julie before nightfall." She said.

Luke took the paper from her, "I'll be back."

"For?"

"Does there need to be a reason?"

The answer: no. She liked being with Luke, even if it had only been, truly, a day, but, I guess that what having a soulmate does to you.

"No, but I have homework to do and you have to practice this song with Julie. Plus it will give me time to figure out this whole singing in head thing. So poof."

One last smirk, Luke poofed from her room and she sighed. She grabbed her book from her shelf and sat down at her desk.

It didn't talk long for the singing from Luke to start. Not like they could help it, but also not like she didn't mind it.

NIGHTFALL HAD finally come and Lennon still had her textbook opened, the movie playing on her laptop, and her eyes shut as she tried to come up with the answer to the last question.

It had been a long day for her. Her father had been gone for a couple of hours and the only sounds were of her laptop playing a movie.

Luke had poofed back into her room. As he said, "I'll be back.". He wanted to know more about the girl who's been with him for months/years and now that he had the opportunity to see her, that's all he wanted to do.

He approached her and looked down at her. She appeared to be asleep as the movie in front of her went on.

The same movie, nothing different and it didn't shock him. Especially since she said it brought her comfort.

"Kat? Can I keep you?"

Luke scrunched his nose at the sight of the movie in front of him. He hadn't seen it since dying, but he knew it well enough to remember the plot of the movie.

He watched the movie closely. As Casper placed a gentle kiss on Kat's cheek. To Kat, it probably felt like cold air brushing against her cheek. To Casper, it was so much more than a kiss. His first crush that hadn't been so scared of him. A girl who was willing to be with him, friend or something more. Regardless if it was a kiss on the cheek or the lips. Casper genuinely liked Kat. He was a ghost and he found his "soulmate".

He looked back down at Lennon before squatting down beside her.

"Lenny." He whispered.

She slowly opened her eyes and looked down.

"Maybe you should get some sleep." Luke said.

"What time is it?"

He shrugged his shoulders, "Time means nothing to me now."

She took in a breath before getting up and grabbing her phone from her bed. The time, eleven fifty-six. She rubbed her eyes and made her way back to her desk. Turning the movie off and shutting her textbook. The unanswered question would have to remain that way until she woke up.

"Did you ever find anything about this singing thing?" He asked.

"No, but tomorrow I can talk to Julie and see if we can come up with some idea about what's going on." She replied, "We're connected, but the real question is why."

The real question was: Why isn't Lennon telling Luke the truth?"

"Okay. I mean, I'm connected to my guitar, so maybe it's like you're attached to my soul or something."

Guess that's why they call it soulmates. What Luke was saying made sense. Yes, they were connected and if he was able to play with his band because of their instruments being attached to them then Lennon had to be connected to his soul.

But Lennon knew this. Lennon knew her and Luke were attached because they were soulmates. She wanted more answers for herself. One of those being why her soulmate just so happened to be dead.

"You can touch those though, you can't touch me."

Luke held a tight lip. She was right. He could pick up and play his instruments with ease. Last time he tried to touch Lennon, he was shocked... quite literally.

"Doesn't hurt to try again does it?"

He could see how reluctant she'd become but she slowly held her hand out.

He slowly approached her and just like before, his hand went completely through hers, without the shock.

"I'm sorry."

He softly smiled, "Why are you apologizing?"

"I wouldn't know what it was like not being able to touch a person. Like, I know you at least want to high-five someone."

It made more sense to Lennon that her love language was touch. At that moment it didn't surprise her. She wanted to touch him, just as much as he wanted to touch her.

"Yeah." He answered, "I can high-five Alex and Reggie if I really wanted to."

Lennon nodded in response, "You should come by the studio sometime. Get to know them better." Luke said.

"Sure. Tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow."

It grew silent between the two of them. Until it wasn't.

"Why are you singing, but not out loud?" She asked.

"Is it loud?"

"No, it's like a whisper."

He smiled, "Then there's your lullaby for tonight. Alex was tired of hearing me sing out loud last night."

"You don't have to sing me to sleep, you know?"

"I know... it's just nice to be heard."

Lennon softly smiled, "Well, if you choose to sing me to sleep tonight, don't let it be Twinkle Twinkle Little Star again."

"You got it... I'll let you sleep."

"Goodnight, Patterson."

"Goodnight, Lenny."

With that, he poofed from the room.

Soulmates... they'll be the death of you.
