FIFTEEN. midnight daydreams

EVERYONE HAD dreams whether they were good dreams, bad dreams, daydreams, etc., everyone had them.

Some people had dreams that could come true and some people had dreams that they didn't think could come true.

Lennon had dreams. Luke had dreams. Julie had dreams. Alex had dreams. Reggie had dreams. Everyone had dreams. No matter if they were good dreams, bad dreams, or daydreams.

Luke sat on his couch, practicing for the new song that the band would be performing later tonight, right outside the garage.

A simple song. It was currently only known as Great, a working title that the band hadn't really thought about but probably should.

The doors of the garage opened, looking over Lennon walked inside with a smile.

"Hey, what are you doing here?"

She held two big bags in the air, "Just dropping off some stuff for tonight. I told Julie I'd help decorate."

Luke watched as she sat the bags down by the piano. Her outfit was different than her normal wear. The pink plaid dress, a short white sleeve underneath it with yellow socks and her white high tops. Still a Lennon outfit, just with a little pizazz.

She turned and faced him, "What?" She knew that she was somewhat out of her comfort zone. A suggestion from Carrie about "changing it up a little".

"Nothing. You just... look very nice."

Luke could only wince at his own awkwardness. He didn't know what it was but he knew something was off. Maybe it was just because it was early in the morning and he had only awoken a couple of minutes ago or he wasn't use to seeing his soulmate in a dress.

Lennon wrapped her arms around herself, "Well, thank you."

She was an idiot for leaving her jacket at home. She didn't realize how cold it would've been this morning. Living in California had its perks from time to time, but at six in the morning, standing in a garage with no heat and the current temperature was forty-eight degrees... well, it wasn't fun for her.

Luke took notice and grabbed the heavier dark red flannel from beside him and tossed it her way.

"What is this for?" She asked, holding the jacket in the air.

"You looked cold."

She smiled and slipped the jacket onto her arms. She made her way over and sat down beside him on the couch.

"Isn't it too early to be practicing?" She asked.

She sat with one leg tucked under the other and her arms resting on the back of the couch. Her head resting in her arms as she waited for Luke's response.

"It's never too early, babe." He responded.

Lennon softly nodded. She knew that this band was important to him. He was getting whatever recognition that he deserved. This band meant everything to Luke and Lennon was going to support that.

It was silent between them. The only sound coming from Luke strumming. It was comfortable. The two of them easily falling into that comfort since the beginning. Nothing new about that.

"Why'd you leave the set?" Luke asked. "We never got to hear you tell us how great we were." He joked.

Lennon smiled, letting a small chuckle leave her lips. As much as she hated to admit it, she was becoming insecure about whatever was happening between her and Luke.

The way Julie and Luke had looked at each other during Finally Free had put that in perspective.

She also had the shock coming from Caleb that she had no idea about. No search on the internet could give her any answer to that.

The one thing Lennon thought about before dozing off was the utter thought that her soulmate could be interested in someone else.

Lennon had called Carrie that morning asking if it was possible for your soulmate to fall out of love with you.

She wasn't saying she loved Luke and if she did she would hopefully know, but she couldn't read Luke's mind.

She truly didn't know how Luke felt about her. Luke could like her but then there's Julie. Who was literally right around the corner.

Lennon could tell that Carrie was confused as she didn't say anything else for a minute or two. Carrie came to the conclusion of telling Lennon the truth, that heartbreak sucks, but maybe, just maybe your soulmate could fall out of love with you. Adding to that, Luke and Lennon were different.

TOP ONE HUNDRED PLUS HEARTBREAK ANTHEMS.

favorite line: none this whole song makes me hate everything.

She wasn't lying. She hated Heather with her whole chest. She felt stupid, but watching Luke and Julie interact on stage made her think of that stupid song. Heather this and Heather that. Lennon wasn't Heather. At that moment, on that stage, Julie was Heather. Even before any of this, Lennon hated Heather. That song put the thought in her mind that she wouldn't be anyone's "Heather". She had Conan blocked on everything for making her think that. Truly not his fault, more so her own thoughts, but she couldn't easily get rid of those.

"I felt really bad during your song, like a really intense pain. They, uh, let me go early. I would've stayed. Told you how amazing you guys were." She smiled, "I feel better, so, nothing to worry about."

Nothing to worry about at this moment in time. That shock was definitely something and she didn't really know how to deal with said pain when she had arrived home. Her father was at his job, and she didn't really know how to explain that her pain was caused by a man her father had never met.

Luke softly smiled as he strummed the tune of Great on his guitar. He took another look at Lennon, who was now playing with straps on her backpack and stopped strumming.

"What's up?"

Lennon held a tight lip. She was okay at the moment, her mind the only thing running a mile a minute. She had always felt comfortable with Luke and nothing could possibly change that, but after last night, she felt different. She could only think about Heather, Julie, and Luke. Plus the death feeling shock.

She shrugged her shoulders, "What's it like? Not being able to touch everything you wanted?" She asked.

Luke quickly looked up at her. The question was not what he had expected. He never really thought about everything he couldn't touch. At times he wanted to thank Julie with a hug and couldn't, but with Lennon, things were different.

Last night, after his curiosity about love languages, was about to completely burst. He had asked Alex about love languages and he didn't have any clue what Luke was talking about. Then he went to Reggie who proceeded to go on and on about what he read in a book once. Luke decided to not ask Reggie about why he read a book about said topic as he came to his own realization in why he wanted to touch the girl in front of him so bad.

Physical touch as a love language between a ghost and a living person wasn't easy. Especially since Luke knew he was a touchy person; now knowing the true meaning behind it, it probably explained why the two of them kept doing the Casper hand thing. That was the closest "touch" they were gonna get.

"It sucks." Luke answered, "I've gotten better at touching and holding other things, things that aren't attached to my soul, but not being able to touch certain things suck."

Lennon, literally right then and there, was about to apologize for even asking, but she understood where he was coming from.

Lennon would do anything to just have her hand not go through Luke's. Maybe it was a soulmate thing or maybe it was because she liked him, but she just wanted to at least touch him.

"Hugging Alex and Reggie is starting to get repetitive."

She let out another breathy laugh before going back and playing with the straps on her backpack.

Lennon, from the looks of it, always kept to herself and Luke was the loud rockstar in a band. The two of them completely different people. So different than what the eyes could see, but if you looked close enough you could see just how similar they actually were.

"You know in Casper when he first asked Kat, "Can I keep you?"" Lennon asked, "I always thought it was weird. If someone came up to me and asked me that, I think I would be freaked out, but it made sense why he asked. He didn't really have anyone until her. I like to think that they are happy. She's alive and had to grow up and he was dead and had to watch, but at that moment they had each other, and that's all that mattered to them or at least to him. I like to think that's us. Just livin' in the now."

"Lennon?"

"I also thought it was really cool that Kat's dead angel mom let Casper become human so he could have just five minutes to dance with Kat... to kiss her, to touch her, to ask "Can I keep you?" again, and in those five minutes he probably felt the most alive in years. I think that's the coolest thing he could've ever experienced."

"Lennon? Are you okay?"

She slightly smiled and nodded. A fictional character. Lennon was so attached to a fictional character in a fictional movie. None of it was real and she knew that. Casper wasn't real. Kat wasn't real. But right then and there, there Casper and Kat sat on Julie Molina's couch. The two of them looking at each other and not worried about anything else but each other.

"Just a thought." She whispered.

Luke sat his guitar down. Turning his body so he faced the girl. His full attention now on her.

"That movie came out the year I died. I had only seen it twice. Once with Alex and then I sat and watched it myself. I like to think of it as a guilty pleasure."

Lennon softly smiled, "My mom loved it. She... she would uh, always have it on in the background. I never knew a movie could make me feel good. They would call certain movies "feel-good movies" and I would never feel good after them. I would always feel the same. I don't know why Casper was different. I couldn't relate to any character. Until now, I guess."

Luke felt like he didn't really need to speak. Lennon never really opened up to him. She had her times where she told him things, but if Lennon was going to tell him anything, no matter if it was about life or just what was currently going on, he was gonna be the one to listen.

"And sometimes it feels like I'm dreaming. One day I'm gonna wake up and this was all a dream. That Alex, and Reggie,... and you were never here. Some sick dream, you know? And I go back to being whoever I was a couple of weeks ago. But whether this is a dream or this is my life now, I'm just... really glad I got to meet and know all of you, but, you know, more specifically my soulmate."

Wanna know something crazy? If the two of them were to touch right then and there it would be over. They knew that. Luke especially knew that. After very touch, they had a least one minute to get whatever else out of the air before they both woke up.

Luke could remember every joint dream he had with Lennon. He was a ghost, he could probably do more than what he knew. Lennon could only remember bits and pieces of every dream.

After their first couple of joint dreams, Luke decided to finally try and learn how to work the newest technology and search if soulmates could share dreams or if this was "in his head thing". Lo and behold, they could. Luke and Lennon could do everything thing in the soulmate book but touch.

Lennon on the other hand had to use the context clues in these dreams to realize that as soon as they touched she would wake up. She just didn't know Luke would be having the same dreams as her. The same joint dreams anyway.

"I'm not going anywhere, Lennon."

Lennon smiled as she felt herself leaning forward and wrapping her arms around Luke's shoulders. Her face instantly being buried into the crook of his neck.

Now it was time to just rapidly get whatever else they wanted out the way. Luke definitely was gonna remember the entirety of this dream and Lennon only remembering bits and pieces or nothing at all.

Luke allowed his arms to go around her waist and once he did so, he felt Lennon relax into him.

In Luke's eyes, Lennon was more than this shy girl who barely spoke unless addressed. Lennon had been with him for months. Whether she knew it or not, Lennon helped Luke a lot. From the times he wasn't home from the times he felt alone. Luke felt like he was the guy who just had to be there for his friends so his own emotions were kept inside rather than out.

In Luke's point of view, Lennon was everything and more. More than her goofy and awkward self. She was so much more than just his soulmate.

"I appreciate you, you know?"

There were just something's Lennon knew to say and exactly when.

Luke kept his arms secured around her waist as he felt her breathing become heavier and heavier. Meaning she was waking up soon enough.

"Lennon? You're gonna wake up soon."

"I'm sorry." She muttered.

There was no concept of times in these dreams. It could've been time for Lennon to get up and go to school or she could've fallen asleep literally seconds ago and was about to wake up; and because Lennon decided to touch Luke first, she was going to wake up faster than he was.

"Don't apologize." He sighed, "Lennon?"

She didn't respond, but she was awake enough to understand what was being said to her.

"Lennon, I need you to know that whatever happens that we're gonna be okay. We're all gonna be okay."

"Okay."

And just as easy as it was to believe that everything that just happened was a reality. Lennon held her head from her pillow and wiped her eyes. She grabbed her phone and squinted as the bright screen read the time. Midnight.
