ELEVEN. at that moment he was the only thing on my mind

LENNON HATED everything about this dance or any dance for that matter. She honestly would like to be at home playing Just Dance while her father was at work.

Maybe it was the fact she hated large crowds or she hated the feeling of being alone at functions like this, or the fact she had to go home and change for the theme. Either way, she rather be home.

"Is everybody fired up for Julie and the Phantoms?" Flynn asked, "Great! Keep that fire 'cause that's later. We're a bit behind schedule, but don't worry, just enjoy these mind-blowing beats."

She approached the two girls backstage.

"Julie and the Phantoms?" Julie questioned.

"Lennon and I had some free time in French class. And you'd better like it because I registered it on Insta, Snapchat, Twitter-"

Julie smiled, "No, I love it. But I'd love it even more if the actual Phantoms were here."

The two of them watched as Flynn's eyes grew wide and pointed. The two others turned and saw Nick approaching them.

Lennon stepped away from Julie and out into the hallway.

There was still no sign of the boys, and contacting Luke would be only semi-awkward. More awkward if someone caught her singing in the middle of an empty hallway.

She knew she had told Luke to go and relax for a couple of hours, but she didn't think he would gone long.

"Look at you! You look great."

She turned and placed a smile on her face as Carrie approached her, her furry jacket hanging off her shoulders.

"Hey, uh, so do you."

Carrie smiled, slightly tilting her head to the side, "Have you talked to Luke again?"

"No, actually. I haven't seen him in a couple of hours, but it would be great if I could see him though."

Carrie wouldn't understand the worry Lennon was going through. The only person who would, would be Julie. Luke was so angry at Trevor earlier today, he wouldn't blow a gig to do something stupid.

"There's always time after the dance, you know if your dad isn't strict." Carrie said.

Lennon nodded. She pulled her phone from her pocket. Nine fifteen. Fifteen minutes late.

"Are you going to call him?" Carrie asked.

"I was actually waiting for him to call me. He's supposed to be doing something really big, but he hasn't called yet."

"He will, Lennon, don't worry about it."

Too late. They were ghosts. Lennon knew that, but she didn't know about the ghost world, she didn't know what they were up to, she didn't know who said what. She was worried.

"I'm going to find Nick. Relax with this Luke thing."

Lennon nodded and watch Carrie leave her side.

Nine fifteen.

STILL NO sign of the boys. Eleven o'clock had rolled around. Three hours. Three hours late.

Julie and Lennon sat on the floor, backstage and hoping for the boys to come.

"Have you figured that singing thing out yet?" Julie asked.

Lennon looked up from her fingers. She hadn't even thought about the singing thing. What she told them earlier that day was what she was sticking with for the week, hopefully getting more and more comfortable telling the full story.

"No." She answered, "With all that's happened today, I haven't found any time to do anymore searching."

Julie only nodded, going back to fumble with the cord of the projector.

"Issues?"

The two of them looked at and saw Nick looking down at the two of them.

"I'll try and call." Lennon muttered and stood from her spot.

She walked out into the empty hallway.

She let out a breath, "Can you hear me?" She sang softly.

She waited a few minutes and nothing. Nothing was heard. She couldn't tell if she was the problem and something was off or he couldn't hear her and something was off. Either way, something was off.

No response. No Luke. No band. No sign of them being anywhere. If Luke did sing back to her she wouldn't know how near or far he was. The only way she knew where he was is if he told her.

With no response, she made her way backstage.

Julie stood, somewhat frozen, as Nick stood on stage.

"We fixed the hologram thing. Who wants to see a show?"

"What is he talking about?" Lennon asked.

"He gave me this stupid confidence boost and now I'm going to have to embarrass myself yet again."

"Now... give it up... for Julie and the Phantoms!" Nick shouted into the microphone.

Lennon sighed, "Well, you're not going out there alone."

She looped her arm with Julie's and the two of them headed towards Nick. Julie held the microphone close.

"Um... Hi. So here's the thing... even though we got the machine fixed, thanks to Nick... I can't seem to link up with the guys. WiFi, am I right? I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to cancel." Julie explained.

With that response and how the crowd had instantly changed moods, it didn't take Carrie long to walk on stage, a bright smile across her face.

"Um. Anybody know the Heimlich? Julie's choking. Only one way to save this dance." Carrie smiled. She grabbed the microphone from Julie, "Who wants to see Dirty Candy?"

As Carrie went to turn the knob on the turntables, Lennon got to it first. She twisted the knob off and held it in her hand.

"Wow, first it the water on the carpet and now this broken knob. Can't believe how clumsy I am today. I am so sorry." Lennon said.

"Looks like the knobs are broken." Flynn said aloud.

More groans could be heard across the gym.

"Okay. Two can play at this game. Party at my house!" She smiled.

The crowd applauded. Carrie smiled as she dropped the microphone. She held onto Nick's hand ( who was hesitant to grab hers ) and led the crowd out of the gym.

Except for the guy who had been moving at a snail's pace to talk to the girl who sat at the far end of the bench. The two of them now in the center of the gym, swaying back and forth.

CLEANING A gym at midnight wasn't in Lennon's list of things to do, but she added to the list anyway. She didn't want Julie and Flynn to clean the mess on their own.

Flynn had left to go to the cafeteria to get the girls some ice cream and Lennon headed to her locker to find something else to pop the balloons with.

What she hadn't known was the Julie had left the gym to go find either girl. She had just talked to the boys ( mainly Luke ) about how embarrassed she was and she completely quit the band.

Not exactly what the boys wanted to hear from her. They also didn't expect to feel a jolt going through their bodies. Nothing good about that either.

The jolt felt draining almost. Like they were dying all over again, or, what they assumed not dying from food poisoning felt like.

They heard small footsteps approaching the gym. Looking back, Lennon, nose deep in her phone as Carrie texted her about how the party had been over and wanted to know if she wanted to come over.

After today, Lennon didn't know where she really stood with Carrie, and that really sucked. Carrie had been so hateful towards Julie about this "hologram" band and the events of tonight. Though Carrie had probably not meant for her comment to be a dig at Lennon, they really felt like they were.

Luke looked back at the boys. He didn't have to say anything for them to poof from the gym.

He wanted to tell her all they had found out tonight, but he also had to break it to her that this probably couldn't work, no matter how much he wanted it to.

She sighed, leaving Carrie on read. She put her phone back in her pocket and finally looked up.

Luke being the only one in the gym with her.

She let out a small breath and approached him, "I assume you have a good reason for not showing up."

How did he want to address the soulmate thing to Lennon? He didn't want to freak her out with this. He didn't want her running off like Julie did. He didn't want her to not believe in him being her soulmate.

"I, uh, figured out the singing thing between us." He replied.

Not what she was expecting to hear. She didn't know what to say either. She'd been keeping this huge secret from him and just like that he knew ( in her mind ) everything.

"I know this is going to sound crazy and unbelievable because, trust me, it is, but we're soulmates, and- and, I don't have all the answers on why, but I thought you should know."

Lennon sighed. Luke thought Lennon should know first hand about them being soulmates. Something Lennon had been keeping to herself for weeks until telling Carrie this morning.

"I know." She replied.

"You knew?" Not what he was expecting to hear, "Why didn't you say anything?"

"I was scared. Of everything that could happen when you found out."

"What did you think I was going to do?" He asked, "Did you think I was going to push you away?"

She took a breath before letting her eyes wander towards the ground.

Luke let his shoulders drop. Lennon looked defeated. She didn't want to tell him, let alone talk about any of this today.

"I'm sorry." She apologized, "I was going to tell you when everything felt... easier, but I kept pushing the truth further and further away because I never knew how this was going to work. I never knew how you felt. I'm- I'm sorry. All I could think of was the worst. What will he say? What he will he do? Will he try something? Did I scare him off? Will he want nothing to do with me?" Lennon questioned, "I was scared of the worst."

No matter how much she tried, with each question her voice trembled.

"I know I really like you Luke, but I don't how this is going to work. I should've told you sooner and I'm sorry I didn't."

Luke watched as tears ran down her face. He wasn't upset with her. He knew that she had every right to feel how she did during all of this, but he also had his own emotions.

As Lennon said, she found comfort in Luke, and right now, when she needed him the most, she couldn't find comfort with him.

"Maybe... maybe we just need a few days to figure things out. The two of us... alone." Luke said.

"Yeah, I get that. I- I totally understand." She replied, "You have every right to be upset, you know?"

Lennon was thinking the worst of the situation. Luke knew that. He didn't want to spend time away from her. He suggested it because, at least for tonight, that's what they needed.

He felt like he was having an out of body experience. He looked around no one in sight. He looked back down at Lennon her removed her hands from her eyes.

Caleb Covington got what he wanted. The two of them to spend time apart. No matter how much he could've controlled Luke's words. Luke somehow, someway fought him off. Luke didn't know it was Caleb though.

He took steps back as he watched Lennon and Luke from a distance. He was doing so well with controlling the words that came from Luke's mouth, and then suddenly it wasn't working.

"I'm sorry."

Lennon sighed, "Why are you sorry? You have nothing to apologize for."

"I want this to work. I just don't know how."

"I want this to work out, just as bad as you do, but like you said, maybe it's best we just figure this out on our own. You can always ask Alex and Reggie and maybe even Julie what they think, and you come to me no matter how good or bad it is, you know where you can find me." She said.

Caleb had never seen anyone react in the ways they had. He would've thought the two of them would've been more angry with each other. Lennon kept this secret from him. Even when he was controlling Luke's words, it's like Caleb couldn't truly make Luke angry.

Luke nodded, his own tears running down his face. He hadn't expected the conversation to go this way.

"I'm sorry. If I could take it back I would. You deserve to know first hand and I was too scared... I was scared that I could lose, what felt like the one good thing I had go. Regardless of that, you should've known." Lennon said.

"Lennon..." Luke sighed. He stared at her. His own tears pricking his eyes as he watched her hands return to cover her eyes.

She didn't like crying in front of people. She hated more than anything and though the two of them weren't arguing or even having anything close to a fight, Lennon felt like she broke some type of trust she had with him.

Not the case on his end. He could barely remember half the conversation due to Caleb, continuing to watch the two of them from afar.

Caleb knew that the two of them were somehow connected, losing or falling out of love with your soulmate during, before, or after a relationship could be the most heartbreaking thing that person could go through. When he lost his own soulmate due to them moving on without his, it felt like someone was grabbing at his heart and jumping all over it. And someone was.

He didn't get that same reaction from Lennon and Luke. The two of them cared deeply about each other. Caleb could completely take over either of their bodies and say something, anything to try and hurt the other. He just tried with Luke, and somehow, someway, Luke was still soft with Lennon.

Caleb wanted the two of them to rip each other's heads off. Bicker back and forth, shout forbidden words, but no. All he got was two teenagers so deeply connected that no research on the internet could describe. He got two teenagers who cared about each other, maybe time alone was all he was getting out of the both of them and after seeing how they acted towards each other, maybe they would be back together. Joint to the hip like nothing ever happened. Like, this whole time, the two of them just knew they were soulmates and they would figure something out. Something Caleb couldn't do. Something Caleb tried to do and seeing two teenagers do what he couldn't only made him envy the teenage boy more.

Luke bit the inside of his cheek. Lennon's eyes still being covered by her hands, not really preventing the tears from falling like she had planned, no matter how much pressure she applied.

Luke could reassure her and let her know that things were gonna be okay, but he truly didn't have that answer.

He raised his hands to removed her hands from her eyes. His hands going straight through her arms.

He thought that since the two of them about each other being soulmates that they could've touched each other. That's was just proven to be false.

"Lennon."

She sighed and ran her hands over her face. Once she was sure there was nothing on her face anymore she turned around, a smile on her face.

"Hey, Carrie. What are you doing here? Thought you had a party?"

"I texted you and told you it was over and you never responded. Then I see on your private story that you're still at sch- are you crying?"

"Me? Crying? No." She answered, "I made sure that when I turned around that there were no tears on my face."

"Lennon... what's wrong?"

Lennon turned her head. No sign of Luke being in the gym with her anymore. She looked back at Carrie and began crying again.

"I messed up." She answered, "I should've told him the truth from the get go."

Carrie could only assume that she was talking about Luke. She had never seen the girl cry. No really saw Lennon cry. She hated doing it and she really only cried when she was alone, but here she was crying in front of Carrie, twice in front of Luke, and unbeknownst to her, Caleb only mere minutes ago.

Carrie pulled Lennon into a hug.

Carrie wasn't good with her own emotions half the time. She let jealousy get in the way of a lot of things. Jealousy caused her some friendship issues and relationship issues with Nick alone. So, she never would've thought that she would be comforting someone right now, let alone that person being Lennon Sunder.

Caleb Covington got what he wanted. Maybe his plan worked in a way he hadn't originally seen it, but at the end of the day, Luke Patterson and Lennon Sunder were separated, not speaking, and hopefully, lose their connection.

Caleb Covington had his ways. He was going to make this work.

Congratulations. His first step complete.
