EIGHT. just wanna be with you
IN LENNON'S humble opinion. The third High School Musical was the best ( the second coming in close behind ) and nothing could change her mind about it.
From the set designs ( higher budget or not ), the appreciation she now had for Sharpay Evans, the questionable actions of Gabriella Montez and Troy Bolton, and finally, the songs. Oh, how the songs made Lennon believe that true love was a thing she could have.
TOP ONE HUNDRED PLUS RELATIONSHIP ANTHEMS
number twenty-two: just wanna be with you - zac efron and vanessa hudgens
favorite line: "no matter where life takes us nothing can break us apart."
Lennon wasn't heavy on romance, but movies like High School Musical and Casper ( shockingly ) made her feel like romance could happen in her life. Though the relationships between Troy and Gabriela along with Casper and Kat were very, very unrealistic. She had hope that in their cinematic universes, they would be together forever.
Lennon was in a good place, both in the mind and out in the world. Lennon Sunder was excited about life.
She felt like she could dance the night away with anyone that approached her.
The song Just Wanna Be With You blaring through her earbuds as she walked down the hallways of the school building. With no care in the world as she mumbled Troy Bolton's words of love to Gabriella Montez.
Carrie was the first recognizable face that Lennon saw. Lennon, with a smile placed on her face, grabbed Carrie's hand and spun herself around in her grasp.
Carrie could only look at her. Blank expression that was previously on her face changing to a look of, not only confusion but relief as the day of the Spirit Rally, Lennon looked pretty down.
Lennon soon let Carrie's hand go and headed towards her locker. Lennon's mind really felt "rent free" of any and all thoughts. Soulmate? Wasn't thinking of how she would tell Luke. Stressed? Nope. Sad? Please, she was far from it.
She opened her locker and grabbed the essentials needed for the first couple of periods.
Today was going to be a good day for Lennon Sunder.
Flipping the script, Luke Patterson was awoken by the sounds of Lennon Sunder. Not that he was complaining, but the song she was singing sounded familiar.
He slowly sat up from his position, hoping not to wake the boys beside him, and poofed to a place he could hear her without the distractions of either Reggie or Alex bothering him. So, he ended up in Lennon's room.
The song was something he could say he never fully heard. He could say he heard a snippet of it but never the full song.
"You know how life can be, it changes overnight."
That line was familiar enough for him to recognize that Lennon had sung the song before. That song he had played on the piano for the boys to prove that he wasn't completely losing it.
He knew his next couple of steps were completely wrong, but since he was already in her room, why not take a look.
He made his way towards her desk and sat down at the chair in front of it. Luke knew about boundaries, but he was curious about everything, especially since so much was new to him. So, when he saw the sticky note with love language written on it, he couldn't help but want to know more about it.
Then the dreaded folded paper tucked between books and DVD cases. He shouldn't have grabbed it. He shouldn't have even been in her room. He should be sleep right beside Alex and Reggie, but there he was grabbing the paper and reading it to himself.
A small smile grew on his face. "I don't know how to write a song.". Well, that was a lie. The song seemed to be a love song of some sort. Perfect Harmony. Lennon hadn't mentioned liking anyone to him. His smile slowly faded.
Maybe he was overthinking it. Maybe he wasn't. Maybe he shouldn't have gone through Lennon's stuff.
Boundaries. Everyone seemed to tell Luke about boundaries. Curiosity truly killed the cat.
LENNON HAD always hated French. Always, but she had been in pretty much a good mood all day. So, this class wasn't going to be the start of a downfall.
Lennon and Flynn had been working on an assignment together since the start of class. With the progress they were making, it was a sure sign that they both had some sort of hatred for it.
Flynn had thoroughly apologized for what had happened prior. I mean, could you blame Flynn when Julie told her about the three boys being dead instead of holograms, she thought she was going crazy, but at the end of the day she finally believed Julie, the proof was there.
It still didn't make what Flynn did okay. She found Lennon this morning before any classes and apologized. Since Julie had already explained her side, Lennon explained hers, just not in full detail. The same old, same old. "He can hear me sing. I can hear him song. I don't know why." If she didn't yet tell Julie, let alone Luke, she wasn't going to tell someone who was so close to the girl.
"What's a cool band name for Julie?"
Lennon stopped writing and looked at Flynn, "I don't know. I hadn't seen any need to think about it."
"I need ideas. They're performing at the dance tonight and I want to be able to brand them ASAP."
Lennon gave her a slight nod.
She had no idea about them performing tonight. She also was planning on not going either.
"Well, obviously they can't be a band without Julie. So, maybe, start with "Julie and", and work from there."
Lennon ripped a piece of paper out of her notebook and scribbled onto it.
"Julie and the Ghostly Gang." Flynn suggested.
"No." Lennon smiled.
Flynn sighed and scribbled the name out on the paper.
Suggestion after suggestion. Flynn could not come up with anything new that she and Lennon agreed on.
Lennon finally sighed and took the paper from Flynn, "Julie and the Phantoms."
Flynn nodded, "I like it. I'll create the socials after class."
Lennon shut her eyes for a moment as she heard Luke softly singing.
"Everything all right?" Flynn asked.
Lennon couldn't focus on Flynn's question as she was trying to figure out what Luke was singing.
Sounded familiar for sure, but soon enough it became faded, he was singing, he had to be for her to be able to here him, but it sounded like Alex was singing with him.
She opened her eyes and nodded at Flynn.
"It must be crazy to be able to hear him singing all the time. I couldn't imagine that happening to me, and to add on top of it, he's cute."
Lennon bit her lip and nodded.
"So you agree? You think he's cute?"
"I think they're all cute in-"
"I'm talking about Luke and Luke only."
Lennon couldn't tell Flynn about Luke and the whole soulmate thing. If she couldn't tell the guy involved why would she tell a girl she didn't really know.
She would soon see herself become a hypocrite.
"Yeah, he's cute." Lennon answered, "Is that what you want to hear?"
Before Flynn could fire any more rapid questions at Lennon, the bell rang. Lennon couldn't be more thankful to go to another class. If you counted free period as a class.
"DIDN'T LENNON say not to go in her room when she wasn't there?" Alex asked.
"I didn't show you this to ridicule me. I showed you this because-"
Alex raised his brows as Luke cut himself off. Why was he showing Alex, Lennon's song?
Alex didn't bother waiting for an explanation from him. He unfolded the paper in front of him and read it to himself... again.
"What do you think of it?" Luke asked.
"I think you should've not gone through Lennon's stuff. This could've been written way before knowing us. She doesn't have to give you total access to her life, you know?"
Luke pouted, "You don't gotta be so mean about it."
Alex held a tight lip, "Why do you care?"
Having a soulmate made you do crazy things, but of course, Luke Patterson didn't know that Lennon Sunder was his soulmate.
"I don't."
"Then take it back to her house." Alex held the paper out for him to grab, "You don't care... take it back."
"Okay, but, what if it's about one of us? Like, what if it's not even a love song, you know? What if-"
"Luke. I think you want it to be about one of us."
Alex was right. Luke wanted the song to be about him. Luke wanted to know what Lennon was doing or even thinking when she wrote that song.
"You already like her, don't you?" Alex asked, "I'm not judging. People get attached to people quickly. You two are connected."
Luke never knew if Lennon even found out about how or why they were connected. All he knew was that they were somehow, someway connected.
"Look, Lennon will tell you about everything when she finds out. It's probably a lot on her, you know? First, it's the singing in head thing and now she can actually see you. Maybe this is about what she knows or maybe she wrote it out of pure boredom. Either way, Lennon will come to you when she's figured stuff out."
Luke looked down at Alex's hand, still holding the paper he'd given him. He took the paper from him and sighed.
"It's okay to like people quickly. Lennon's great. You're great. Like I said, just give her some time. For now, do something to get your mind off of it, but a suggestion, stop snooping through other people's stuff."
Luke nodded and poofed from the studio and back into Lennon's room. He placed the paper back into its original spot and glanced back down at the sticky note.
Love language: physical touch.
Luke knew nothing of it. Luke wanted to know if it. Luke really wanted to be with Lennon right now.
He just wanted to be with Lennon.
NOTHING WAS going to let Lennon Sunder's day be ruined. She was determined at this point. Nothing was going to ruin her day.
"Hey."
Lennon peeked behind her locker to see Carrie standing there, arms crossed and a smile on her face.
"Hi."
"How are you?"
"Great, what about you?"
"Good, thanks for asking." Carrie smiled, "Question?"
"I might have an answer."
"How's that crush going? His name... Luke, right?"
Lennon shut her locker and faced Carrie. Maybe, just maybe, she could lie her way out of this.
"Luke?" Lennon repeated, "I don't know any Luke's. No Luke's. Where'd you even hear Luke? Me? Luke? No."
"So, you and Flynn weren't talking about a Luke and how you thought he was cute?"
"Well, I guess you heard that, didn't you?"
Carrie nodded, her arms still crossed, her smile still lingering on her face.
Lennon sighed, "Yes, I said that but-"
"But what?" Carrie asked.
"Promise me you won't tell anyone one what I'm going to tell you. I'm putting a lot of trust in you right now."
Carrie stood upright. For Lennon to come to her with a secret was a lot, especially since Carrie didn't consider the girl a friend until three-four days ago.
"I promise."
With that, Lennon sighed. There was no going back now.
"There's a Luke and yeah I think he's cute, but a lot- remember when I asked you about Nick being your soulmate or not?"
Carrie nodded, "There's been this singing going on in my head for months and, according to the internet, that person is my soulmate and I finally met him, but he doesn't know we're soulmates and I don't really know how to tell him without scaring him off." Lennon explained.
It grew silent between the two of them. The only sounds of other people shuffling through the halls and through their lockers.
"I mean, if you don't believe me, we can pretend this never happened and you already promised not to tell anyone and you're obligated to that."
"No, I believe you."
"Well, that's great." Lennon smiled, "Uh, I just felt bad that I was keeping this to myself. I want to tell him. I really do, but it's only been a couple of days and, I don't know. I just feel really lost, and I feel really close to him in this short amount of time I've actually seen him."
"Is this your free period?" Carrie asked.
Lennon nodded. Carrie looped her arm with Lennon's and head towards the library.
Carrie held Lennon's shoulders and pushed her in a chair. Carrie was excited to talk about crushes again. She never did it with Dirty Candy and truthfully, she was excited to get her advice out there to someone who wasn't Nick.
"So, this soulmate thing. You believe it?"
"Yeah?" Lennon questioned, "I mean, it makes sense, sorta. If he wasn't-"
"Wasn't?"
Lennon crossed her arms against the table and rested her chin on them. How could she tell Carrie about Luke without mentioning that he was dead?
"I just feel like my emotions are moving faster than I am. Does that make sense?"
"Explain."
Lennon sighed, "Its been a couple of days, and I've never experienced anything like this before, and I'll probably never get an experience like this again."
Carrie held a tight lip. This, everything Lennon was saying, was new. She'd never heard anything like this before. Yeah, she was glad Lennon told her. It meant a lot to Carrie, more than what Lennon will ever know, but she couldn't really give Lennon the best advice, as this hasn't happened to her.
She pulled her phone and began typing, "Keep talking."
"He sings all the time. It's not bad, he could be tone-deaf." Lennon smiled, "I think because he's helped me without knowing, I've grown to really like him, even before knowing him."
"No one is going to understand the relationship you and Luke have other than you and Luke." Carrie explained, "I can give you advice on top of advice and you and Luke will still know what's best for the both of you. And, liking someone fast isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes it means you're emotionally available and ready. It would be different if you liked the idea of Luke rather than Luke himself."
"What if I don't what's best?" Lennon asked, "What if I'm already messing up? I'm already keeping this big thing from him because I'm scared of him leaving, and for what? Why am I scared?"
"He's your soulmate for a reason, Lennon. This is all new to you. It's new to him. I understand the worry and trust me if there was more I could do I would do it, but Lennon, you've got nothing to worry about. People miss the shots they don't take. You don't want to miss yours with Luke, do you?"
Before Lennon could speak, the sounds of a guitar began playing. She shut her eyes for a moment. This time, he sounded like he was alone. No sign of Alex or Reggie playing their instruments or singing along.
"He is singing now?"
Lennon opened her eyes and nodded.
"What's it like?"
Lennon sat upright, "It depends. Sometimes it's like a whisper, sometimes it's like he's standing right in front of me. The majority of the time it's like an empty area."
"Maybe, this is all happening to a certain group of people. Maybe, this is all just fate based. Or, Cupid just decide to shoot some arrows here and there, but don't worry about the bad parts of this, Lennon. This whole thing is crazy, but think about the good that comes with it. You have a soulmate. You have Luke."
Lennon softly smiled, "There's a lot I want to tell you, but I can't, not now anyway, but, uh, I really appreciate you listening. It's kinda all I needed. I never really go to my dad for stuff like this, so I really appreciate it, more than you know."
"Anytime, Sunder."
Lennon could truly consider Carrie Wilson, a friend.
LENNON HELD her backpack straps close as she made her way to the Molina household. After her conversation with Carrie, she had a lot to think about. Carrie was right, she shouldn't worry about the what if's.
Julie had stopped the girl earlier and asked her to come to band rehearsals. Why not? She was going to hear them playing regardless if she was there or not.
Carrie was also right about Luke. How Lennon had Luke. Lennon didn't want to make things weird now that she had this "slight" crush on him now, but a problem still stood in her way, a subtle detail that she had left out when talking to Carrie about him.
Lennon let her head sway from side to side as the sound of the leaves blew past her.
If there was one question Lennon wanted an answer to, was why? Why was her soulmate someone dead? Lennon didn't understand that. As she told Carrie, she was scared. Truthfully, it was because she knew she couldn't live with Luke. She couldn't live with any of them if she wanted to.
She approached the studio and stood outside of it for a moment longer. She had heard the sounds of them practicing as she made her way there. The music in her head a been pushed on the back burner as she did get closer and closer to it.
She finally grabbed the handle of one of the double doors, allowing herself inside and shutting as quickly as she entered.
As she turned around Alex poofed right beside her.
"Where have you've been?" Luke asked. "We need to start practicing."
"Yeah? For what?"
Before his question could be answered, Flynn walked inside, smiling wide as she flung her hands in their air.
"Dance news! I don't have a date. But I don't care because I'm so psyched to see you guys perform."
"Oh man, we're playing a dance?"
"Of course, dude. That's how we get a following nowadays." Luke answered.
"Yeah, get with the program, Alex." Julie smiled.
Flynn smiled and waved, as she couldn't see them Julie indicated that she was waving the wrong way.
"Okay, well, now that Alex has graced us with his presence, can we start working?" Luke asked.
Lennon felt Flynn grab her arm and pull her to the side.
"So, have you found a date for the dance?" She asked.
It was obvious what Flynn was trying to do, and it worked. She peaked back behind Lennon and caught Luke glancing between Lennon and Alex.
"You gave a lot of emphasis on the word date, didn't you?" Lennon questioned, "Uh, no. No date. I wasn't even planning on going-"
"You're not going?"
Lennon looked back before catching Flynn's gaze, "I hate you." She whispered.
She turned her attention back to the boy who sat on the chair, guitar in his lap.
"I'm going. For support, of course, uh, school dances just aren't my favorite thing in the world so, but for you guys, I'll go." She answered, "I also got more info about the singing in head thing."
"That's great."
"Yeah, but there's also bad news with that, so what do you want to hear first?"
"Can't be as bad as dying."
Lennon smiled, "I love hearing that positivity from you. The good news is that it's not just us. There are about four other people who have or had the same thing going on."
"Bad news."
"Bad news is, is that you seem to be the only dead person that is singing in someone's head, but I also can't read dead people blogs, so who knows."
Julie peaked up, "Did the blog say why this was happening to people?"
Lennon truly didn't think about that part of her plan through. The post did state why it was happening. It was the same thing over and over again. Soulmate. A word she honestly tired of hearing.
"The reason was different for everyone. At the end of the day, they were connected." Lennon answered, "Two people stopped hearing the singing after they met. Two other people still hearing it after they met. Truthfully, it's up to us to figure out why. I can do more research after the dance."
Luke nodded, "I'll stop by. We should tag team."
"Sure."
What else could she say? No? Yes, she could say no, but then she would have to give a reason why. She was tired of lying.
Soon, Julie's little brother, Carlos, walked into the garage.
"Hey, Julie. Remember those orbs in Dad's pictures? I... I think they're ghosts. But don't worry. This room... is... This room is clean. I'm not getting the ghost tinglies."
Reggie smiled, "Wrong again, little dude."
"Have no fear. If they come back, I will protect you, because I am the man of the house."
"Isn't Dad supposed to be the man of the house?"
"There can be two. Dad needs all the help he can get, right? According to the internet, salt burns their souls out." He smiled, "A little sprinkle will keep them from ever coming in here."
He held the salt shaker high and sprinkled salt everywhere. Alex shouting as the salt hit him.
"Oh God, I'm... I'm fine. I'm fine. Totally fine."
Julie directs her attention towards Flynn. A sign to somehow get her brother out of the room.
"Carlos, you know who's hungry? Me. Um, salt me a path to the kitchen."
Carlos grabbed the picture he left of the piano and led Flynn to the kitchen.
"Shall we try this again?" Julie asked.
"Yes, please. But remind us later. There's some Sunset Curve songs that we want to show you."
"Show me now."
Luke smiled as he turned to grab his journal.
Julie scooted over on the piano bench. She patted the seat and let Lennon sit down beside her.
""Home Is Where My Horse Is?" Reggie, stop putting your country songs in my journal."
"That was a gift."
"Thanks, buddy."
"Yeah, you should maybe circle back..."
"I dog-eared the ones that I think you would slay."
Julie flipped through the book, Lennon eyeing the pages as well.
"Who's Emily?" Julie asked.
"That ones not dog-eared."
Luke began to reach for the journal causing Julie to lean out of his reach.
""If you could only know that I never let you go."" Julie read aloud, "Have you ever heard him sing this before?"
Lennon took a quick glance at Luke before shaking her head, "Uh, no. Nothing familiar."
Of course, she had. She was pretty such has sang it once, but it was evident by the look on his face that he didn't want to talk about, let alone have Julie looking at it.
"I didn't know you were such a romantic." Julie smiled.
"He's not. That one's actually about-"
"No one." Luke interrupted, "It's just something that I tried, and... but if you go to the next dog-eared page, I got a tune that's just... it's got a killer beat."
As Luke played, Lennon tilted her head to the side, the tune sounding just as familiar as the lyrics Julie had just read.
"So you wanna sample." Julie said.
"What do you mean "sample""?
"Sample someone else's music. Me and my mom used to sing that song at the top of our lungs."
"It's a classic Trevor Wilson song." Lennon added.
"Nope. It's a classic our song." Luke corrected.
"Pure Sunset Curve. Never even heard of Trevor Wilson."
"Maybe you're mixing it up, you know, with another song." Alex said.
"I don't mix up songs." Julie said, "Trust me."
"That song has been out for years. His daughter goes to our school." Lennon added, "We know that song."
"Okay." Alex muttered.
Julie and Lennon quickly glanced at each other before Julie pulled her laptop from her bag.
"His first album had a bunch of hits, but of his latest stuff isn't as good."
"That's Bobby." Luke said.
"It's literally right there, his name is Trevor." Lennon replied.
"Okay, great. Then... then he changed it, all right? That's definitely Bobby. He was out rhythm guitarist." Alex explained.
"Trevor Wilson was in your band?" Julie questioned.
"I can't get over how old he looks."
Alex scoffed, "He looks like a substitute teacher."
"What were his other hits?" Luke asked.
""Get Lost."" Lennon replied.
"Yeah. I wrote that."
""Long Weekend?"" Julie asked.
"Yeah, Like wrote that one too." Reggie answered.
""Crooked Teeth?""
"And that. It was about Reggie."
"What?" Reggie questioned in disbelief, "I thought it was about you! I don't like that song anymore."
"Wait... this is... freaking me out." Julie said, "Trevor's songs are kind of big to me. He's the one who introduced me to rock."
"Yeah. Luke introduced you to rock."
"So this whole time, I thought you were connected to my mom. But instead, you're connected to Carrie's dad? Out of all people, it had to be the one girl who had it out for me."
"All right, well, add it to our list of questions." Alex said.
"Back when Carrie and I were friends, the three of us used to talk about music all the time. He never mentioned you guys."
"Even with that, he's never mentioned you guys in interviews, behind the scenes, music videos, nothing." Lennon added.
"And that's unbelievable! Okay, he can take all the credit, and he doesn't even mention us?" Luke questioned.
"And he's rich." Julie added.
"Like, stupidly rich."
"He has his own helicopter."
Luke let out one more groan before joining the group at the keyboard.
"He has... he has a... a helicopter?" Alex asked.
"With his face on it."
"And he parks it in front of that hotel?" Reggie asked.
"No." Lennon answered, "He parks it in front of his mansion."
"Mansion?"
"Dude, we live in a garage."
"It's not about the money. It's about the music!"
"It's a little bit about the money though!"
"A little bit about the money."
"He could've shared it with our families. Maybe then my parents wouldn't have had their house turned into a bike shack."
"What he did is steal our legacy." Luke said, "Where does he live?"
"Above the beach in Malibu." Julie answered.
"Let's go teach him a lesson."
"We have to rehearse for the dance. This is our first gig!"
Nothing could stop the three of them from poofing from the room.
"Okay, boys. Break time's over, okay? Get to playing. Mama needs her eye candy." Flynn smiled.
"They're not here." Lennon said.
"I think we just unleashed three angry ghosts on the world. But I think I know where they're going."
