Chapter 17

I walked through the school the next day, glaring at the security cameras bitterly as I passed. I felt grimy as I looked at them, like there were people watching me. For all I knew there were, especially if Gerard knew I was a witch like I suspected he might.

I sighed and followed Allison as she entered the library, glancing around briefly. It was mostly quiet, the only students in here being the one's with a free period. The sound of shuffling feet and turning pages filled the air, as well as the quiet whispers of hushed conversations.

Allison and I glanced at the security camera before strolling behind a shelf, making small talk with one another until we were out of sight. As soon as we were, I took the tablet out of my bag and slid it across the bookshelf, where Scott and Stiles were waiting on the other side. Through the gaps of the shelf I watched as Scott turned on the tablet, looking through the translations Lydia had done on the bestiary.

"It's everything Lydia could translate, and trust me, she was very confused," Allison said as the two boys looked at the tablet.

Scott looked up from the device. "Oh yeah, what did you tell her?"

"That we were part of an online gaming community that battles mythical creatures," I recited proudly. "I came up with it."

"I am part of an online gaming community that battles mythical creatures."

I blinked. "Oh... sick. What's it called?"

Stiles grinned, opening his mouth to tell me when Scott interrupted him. Stiles sent him a dirty look, mouthing the words I'll tell you later to me.

"Okay, does it say how to find out whose controlling it?" Scott asked us, looking back to the tablet.

Allison shook her head. "Not really, but Stiles was right about the murders."

Stiles fist pumped the air violently, muttering the word yes under his breath.

Allison continued. "It calls the Kanima a weapon of vengeance."

"There's a story in there about this south American priest who uses the Kanima to execute murders in his village," I added.

Stiles nudged Scott. "Alright see, so maybe it's not all bad."

"-until the bond grew strong enough that it killed whoever he wanted it to," I finished.

Stiles stared at me, horrified. "All bad, all very, very bad."

"Here's the thing though," Allison said. "The Kanima's actually supposed to be a werewolf, but it can't be until it resolves that in its past which manifested it."

Stiles scoffed, rubbing the side of his face irritatedly. "Okay, if that means Jackson could use a few thousand hours of therapy, I could have told you that myself."

"What if it has something to do with his parents," I suggested. "His real parents."

Scott looked from us to Stiles questioningly. "Yeah, does anybody know what actually happened to them?"

Stiles thought for a second before saying, "Lydia might."

"What if she doesn't know anything?" Scott asked.

"Jackson will," Stiles said, "except we both have a restraining order against him so..."

Both boys looked at Allison and I expectantly and I snorted shaking my head. No way was I going to spend any more time with that piece of work.

"Don't look at me," I said. "If I spent more than five minutes in a room with him I'll end up punching him. Or strangling him. Whichever I think of first."

Allison sighed. "I'll do it."

"So what do I do?" Scott questioned.

Allison sent him a pointed look. "You have a make-up exam, remember?"

Scott cursed, grumbling but saying nothing else.

"And what about me?" I asked.

Allison looked around before sending me a wicked grin, pointing across the room. "It looks like someone is looking for you."

I followed her finger to find Isaac entering the library, his eyes scanning the room before eventually falling on me. He looked good, wearing that stupid leather jacket that seemed to drive me crazy, and his hair slightly dishevelled but still presentable.

I scowled, glaring at Allison as I hissed, "seriously?"

"Try finding out what Derek's plan is," Scott suggested.

I glared at all three of them, Stiles who was shaking his head at me as if it was pointless to try and change my mind about them.

"Fine," I bit out, before leaving the shelf and stomping over to Isaac, trying to calm my futile anger.

They needed me to do a job; it wasn't fair of me to be angry at them about it.

"Finished with your secret club meeting?" Isaac asked as I arrived in front of him.

I scoffed, rolling my eyes, but before I could answer Isaac grabbed my hand and started leading me out of the library. I stared at him, bewildered, but let him walk me down the hall, all the while wondering what was happening.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

Isaac smirked at me. "You'll see."

I followed in silence as he continued walking through the hallways, that was until I realised where he was taking me.

"Skipping school?" I fake gasped as we exited the building. "How rebellious."

Isaac shook his head but smiled, letting go of my hand now we were off school grounds. I followed him curiously, wondering where he was taking me. This was obviously why he had found me in the first place, but why couldn't it have waited until after school? And why was he being so secretive about it?

We walked along the pathway side by side, our hands lightly brushing until Isaac grabbed mine and laced our fingers together. I looked at the ground, hiding my smile as I tried not to focus on the feeling of his skin against mine.

We continued walking in silence until, "so where are we actually going?"

"It's a surprise," Isaac answered, knowing it would only piss me off.

I scoffed. "Come on."

Isaac shook his head. "Nope."

I grumbled, muttering curses under my breath that I knew he could hear, but I wasn't actually that upset. I was excited and feeling giddy as my gaze continued to snag on our hands. I felt like a flustered schoolgirl going on her first date with the guy she really liked. Except I wasn't. This was nowhere near that, because we were both on opposite sides of a war, even though we weren't supposed to be. Even though I was supposed to be on his side.

"So, what's your fearsome alpha got planned now that he knows about Jackson?" I prodded, not trying to hide the fact I was needling him for information. I didn't want to do that. Didn't want to lie to him and get close to him just for information. I was going to be straight up with him, because otherwise I'd be deceiving him, and a good relationship is supposed to be built up on trust.

Not that this was the picture-perfect example of a relationship.

Isaac shook his head, waggling a finger in front of my face. "Uh uh, none of that talk today."

I rolled my eyes. "So what do you want to talk about then?"

Isaac flashed me a grin. "No one said we had to talk..."

I snorted. "Nice try."

Isaac laughed, the sound loud and boisterous and so lovely my knees nearly gave away as we turned a corner. "How about we talk about what we used to before all this happened?"

"And what was that?"

Isaac though for a second. "How much Chemistry sucks?"

I laughed, complying with him. We spent the rest of the walk bitching about Mr Harris, or midterms, or Jackson, a topic we were both on the same side of for once. We could go on for hours about every single stupid thing he'd done, and why we personally deserved the privilege of murdering him ourselves.

Isaac stopped suddenly, pulling me to a stop alongside him. He sent me a grin, gesturing to the building in front of us and I peered at it behind him, the excitement dampening slightly.

"You brought me to a library?" I asked. "How.... nice."

It was a nice library at least. About four or five stories tall, with that old architecture that made everything look like it could be a palace: sprawling windows and spiralled pillars.

Isaac nudged me. "Shut up smart ass. We're not there yet."

My curiosity re-awakened as I followed him behind the building. He showed me to a tree which I climbed reluctantly, and then helped me get from the tree to a windowsill on the second floor. From there it was a treacherous climb to the top of the building, one Isaac assured me he'd done thousands of times before when he was a human, and one I spent convincing myself this was all a master plan of Derek's to kill me and he sent Isaac to come get me and make me climb this stupid building where I'd either die on the way up or Isaac would kill me when I got to the top.

I grabbed Isaac's hand from where he crouched on the roof, silently begging for him not to push me off the roof as he heaved me up on the roof, his hands going to my hips to help steady me as I got back on my feet.

Once I decided Isaac was not going to push me off the roof, I looked around the place, excitement and awe mingling inside me. The roof was just as extravagant as the rest of the building, arches and pillars and small towers protruding at different places. There was one part, at the front of the roof where the view was, that seemed to be a sort of cover. It had a roof, a back, and two sides, but the front was empty so you could see the view.

It was there that Isaac had set up, putting blankets on the floor and against the walls, accompanied by pillows, snacks, and a laptop in the middle. It was a very romantic area, something I was surprised about, as well as how flustered it made me feel. I hadn't realised I was so far gone for Isaac.

Isaac gently grabbed my hand and led me to the little area, where we got comfy under the blankets and against the pillows. I watched as Isaac opened the laptop, grinned at me as he let me see the screen.

I groaned. "Not a horror. I won't be able to sleep for weeks."

Isaac ignored my complaints, pressing the movie and forcing me to watch it as he offered me some snacks. I took them angrily, because if he was going to make me watch a scary movie I sure as hell was going to steal all his food.

We watched the movie, me half sitting in Isaac's lap as I held him tightly, tense as I stared at the screen. Isaac laughed when I jumped, my heart lurching when the monster appeared on screen. I glared at him but said nothing, too engrossed in the movie.

When the movie got to a calm-ish point, I glanced at Isaac, the boy's eyes practically glued to the screen, and smiled. I was reminded of the time before Isaac got bitten, when we went to my house and watched movies. It was nice.

The movie continued, creeping to the climax. I gasped when the monster's claws found their way to the girls stomach, hiding my face in Isaac's neck as I listened to the gory sound accompanying the scene.

I felt Isaac's hands wrap around my waist, felt his hands comfortingly rub against me, calming me down. I smiled, feeling warmed by the action. I liked Isaac a lot, which presented a problem since we were supposed to be enemies. I didn't hate him though; I never had, and I didn't want to have to fight him.

The movie ended, and only then did my heart stop racing and I felt safe once again, though I knew the movie would be haunting me each night when I tried to go to sleep. I felt comfortable in Isaac's embrace, and I didn't want to untangle myself from him, but the thought of us being on opposite sides lingered in my mind so I reluctantly moved away, knowing it was for the best.

"Why do you always do that?" Isaac asked dejectedly.

I frowned at him. "Do what?"

"Push me away."

I blinked surprised, before looking down at my hands as I muttered, "I'm not pushing you away-"

"Yes you are," Isaac insisted, laughing humourlessly. "You never just hang out with me without thinking about Derek or Scott or what stupid sides we're on."

I groaned frustratedly, annoyed he had to bring this up. We'd been having such a good time, and sure, maybe I had pushed him away a little, but for good reason. "Because we are on different sides."

"Can't we forget about all of that for today?" Isaac pleaded. "Please? Can we just be Y/n and Isaac today, be just us today, and worry about all that other stuff tomorrow? Please?"

I sighed, knowing this was a terrible idea and that I absolutely should not agree to it. That we're on opposite sides in a war and there's a fucking Kanima on the loose, but at the same time it was tempting. It was really tempting, and I did really want to be just us, because truth be told I missed him, and I really, really liked him.

So I sighed and looked at the ground, then looked at Isaac's face, feeling nervous and I fidgeted with my hands before mumbling, "I guess we can be just us for a day."

Isaac grinned, the sight so unbelievably bright, so beautiful and perfect and wonderful, that I couldn't help but grin back.
