Part 2: Ground Zero
-
"Who were you talking to?"
Dasha walked up behind JB who kept typing into the system on his laptop while the bear crept up behind him.
"Our dispatch. We got one last order,"
Duncan lowered his weapon and fired at the ground causing JB to snap up at the human who reached for his earpiece.
"Cam? You there?"
"Yeah?"
"He got away," Duncan lied causing the lion to understand what had just happened.
"I'll inform the client,"
Giving a small smile at JB the human shrugged.
"History counts for something I guess," Dasha nodded in agreement.
"Do yourself a favor cat: Stay dead," JB stared at the bear with a smile.
"I'm sure we'll see each other again. This business is way too small," He gave her a wink and walked away leaving the two on the catwalk.
-
"So you allowed your contact JB to get away despite your orders?"
"That sounds about right,"
"Why is that?"
"The last time we did a job like that it didn't turn out well. Besides it doesn't matter anyway if we killed him or not,"
"You half right about it not mattering,"
"What do you mean?"
"Jacob Benjamin or JB. On Interpol most wanted for terrorism were found dead on a beach in Seychelle under the alias 'Simon Markicus' your employer decided to hire someone else to take him out,"
"Hold on, was he a terrorist?"
"You do realize he was hired by the same man that hired you to plant those beacons right?"
"What are you getting at?"
"Aiding in a terrorist getaway is the least of your worries,"
"We didn't know what the beacons would be used for!"
"Then explain to me what happened then,"
"Alright just... Let me be clear my partner and I didn't know who he was,"
"I heard you already. Please continue, what happened during your time in Shanghai. What happened after you let JB go,"
"It went to hell fast,"
-
"Damn things jammed," Duncan hissed at his weapon, causing Dasha to turn to him.
"Need help?"
"Nah I got this just give a second to-" Clearing the jam Duncan sighed. "There we are,"
The human sighed while he lifted his mask up.
"I thought we left this kind of work behind," Duncan held the bridge of his nose. "Fucking assassin missions,"
Dasha gave a nod.
"I hear you. At least nothing else can go wrong,"
Duncan lowered his hand to stare at her.
"Love you didn't just say t-"
Upon her words a sudden explosion went off the building opposite of them, followed by a chain reaction of more explosions though the buildings connected to the first blast. Duncan flipped his mask down while the two took cover.
Like a falling star what seemed like missiles fell from the sky into buildings of Shanghai. Pearl tower the tallest building in all of Asia was brought low by the surprise attack.
While the tower fell more missiles fell upon the city with buildings turning into rubble in seconds. Like giant dominos dozens of buildings fell, even the ones not directly hit fell. Dasha rose from cover while Duncan couldn't take his eyes off what he was seeing.
"We need to get off this catwalk now!"
"Hit the stairs!" Duncan shouted while the two ran across the cat walk while missiles kept diving around the building.
Avoid the lift they came on the two ran for stairs below the catwalk. Running for a door at the end of the cat walk, Duncan tackled Dasha using his body to shield her while a missile hit the door they were just about to run though.
His armor protected them both from the shrapnel from the blast. Quickly they got up the two stared at the exit that was covered in debris.
"There goes that door,"
"Look!" Dasha pointed to a hole in a wall caused by the blast. "Come on,"
"Don't have to tell me twice!"
Running into the building the two made their way inside.
"Cam! You there? What the hell's going on?!" Dasha call while over the radio the two can hear explosions on their friend's end.
"I have no idea there's major activity everywhere!"
"We need a need someplace safe to regroup!"
"You're not going to find it in Shanghai the entire city is-"
"Cam? Cam! Are you okay?!" Only hearing static Duncan growled. "Fuck!"
"She'll be fine we got problems of our own," Dasha warned while overhearing voices. "We got company,"
"I hear them too. How are we going to play this?"
-
"What's that?"
"Clean up. We have targets to find,"
"The guys who planted the DCOM?"
"Yeah should be easy kills,"
Red armored PMCs entered the room on the prowl for the duo, sure enough one of their targets turned the corner.
"Hey!"
The human raised his hands out while his partner sneaked across the incomplete office room hiding behind an unfinished wall.
"Don't shoot,"
The PMCs had their weapons trained on the lone merc in the doorway, ordering him to get on his knees Duncan complied however Dasha had already rounded the corner into the room behind the red-clad mercs.
"Eastern we got one of the targets in custody what's the play," The more well-armored of the group spoke into his radio. "Copy. Terminating subject,"
On cue, Dasha rose from cover and fired, taken by surprise the PMCs further from her quickly turned their guns out in a brief instant. Yet this allowed Duncan to rise up with the pistol at his side and fire killing the two grunts while Dasha made quick work of the officer.
"Damn, it's these guys," The human stood over the corpse of one of the red-clad PMCs from the convoy they passed just hours ago.
"Come on Duncan we can't stay here," Dasha shouted getting the human's attention which he complied while the building shook.
Running down the hall Duncan attempted to contact their friend.
"Cam you read? Come on cat respond,"
"I told you not to call me that," Cam's voice came over the radio all be it a little horse.
"Thank god. Are you okay?"
"I'm still here,"
"Where?"
"The South African consultant," Cam answered
"Alright. Stay where you are. We're coming to get you," Duncan said while the two stopped at a broken ladder that led to an opening to the floor above
"Duncan. Can you give me a boost," Nodding the human squatted down his hands together, Dasha stepped on his hands while Duncan gave the bear a boost upward.
"Clear,"
Fully up, Dasha got down and offered her partner a hand which the human took allowing him to follow her up to the next floor. Before they could advance though the construction site a wall was breached the mercenaries in red as they poured in sending waves of bullets for the duo.
"VISUAL ON TARGETS! TERMINATING!"
Getting into cover the two returned fire.
"What the fuck do they want with us?" Duncan asked while reloading his weapon.
"Maybe because we killed their buddies? How the hell should I know?!" Dasha responded firing her own weapon.
As she advanced forward the bullets buzzing past her Duncan stuggled with his weapon.
"Goddamn it! Piece of shit!" Duncan pulled the bolt to attempt to free the jammed round but stopped upon seeing two more red mercs turning the corner to flank his partner. "Fuck it,"
Pulling his side arm he fired with one hand while his other held the still jammed assault rifle.
"Duncan fix that shit and help me,"
"Seriously? Moody ass bear," Rolling his eyes he ran after to follow Dasha who was holding the point by herself causing Duncan to clear the jam, he returned fire allowing Dasha to reload.
Fighting their way into a larger open space the two fought though the mercs, upon entering the larger space they began to take fire from a unfinished lower section of the site causing Duncan to curse. The mercs had set up a heavily armored machine gun emplacement that was quickly punching into their cover and would make quick work of them if they weren't careful.
".50 Cals? Why is it the guys we go against have better weapons than we do!?"
"Quit your whining Cyka! Take the heat I'm going another way," Dasha ordered leaving the human merc to mimic her voice.
"Quit your whining... Just stating the truth red," Blind firing onto the armored .50 caliber machine gun stand making them focus on him.
Dasha ran down the side getting in close as she pulled a fragmentation grenade from her belt and cooked it slight, after a good moment she tossing it from cover she smiled upon hearing the panicked cries of the mercs.
"SHIT! GREN-!" Not being able to finish his warning as he was shredded.
Duncan peaked from cover to Dasha who gave a nod and wave which he quickly moved over to her. Moving downwards following their mask's GPS to the staircase but stopped when suddenly Dasha pulled Duncan back.
"What?"
"Civilians," Dasha pointed out causing Duncan to shake his head upon seeing a few mercs hold two locals hostage as one of the mercs started torturing one of them.
"Damn it. How we going to play this?" Her partner asked to which she got an idea.
"Remember what JB showed us?" Dasha asked.
"Sorta why?"
"Those guys in the better gear seem to be officers. Maybe we could pull what we did on those cops from before," Duncan nodded.
"Let's do it,"
The two slowly moved forward, Dasha creeped up behind a more heavily armored merc who was laughing at the torment of the civilians pain. Wrapping an arm around the officer she held her pistol to his head.
"Oi <Assholes>!" Dasha's voice ran out causing the two remaining mercs to turn away for a moment from the hostages. "I got your boss,"
The two mercs quickly scrambled for their weapons but Duncan was quick to flank them but gave them a friendly greeting.
"Hi!" Pulling the trigger the mercs feel saving the civilians. "Bye,"
Snapping the officer's neck Dasha watched as the two civilians who were thanking Duncan the two in mandarin.
"It's fine don't worry about it... Er... <Your good. Get Safe. Move quickly>!" Duncan answered back but completely butchering the Chinese language in doing so.
However the locals understanding the broken speech got the message and ran off leaving Dasha punching his shoulder lightly.
"Your Mandarin is atrocious,"
"Piss off!" Duncan grumbled while the two went back on track to find their handler.
The two then were able to leave the insides of the unfinished building to it's roof, however more mercs awaited their arrival and opened fire. Dasha took cover behind Duncan's more heavily armored body as he began to take most of the bullets. The custom armor layer took most of the attack yet the two quickly got to cover before his armor was completely shredded.
As they fired back Duncan cursed behind his mask at seeing the roof was divided by a large fence and from the looks of it, the damn thing had powered gate. Seeing nothing big enough from them to get over Duncan turned to Dasha.
"Were going to need to get over that fence if we want to get off this roof," Peaking to see what he partner was referring to she nodded in agreement.
"Lift?"
"Our only bet," The plan set the two returned to the action.
Mercenaries with ballistic shields turned the corner to advance on the two PMCs but it was nothing they haven't done before. Duncan like he did before on the Mounted machine gun turned corner and opened fire grabbing their attention. As on cue Dasha threw her final grenade at the shield bearers as it landed at their feet, not paying attention the two watched as the shields went flying with the remains of their wielders.
Not wasting a second the two ran to the fence as Dasha got onto Duncan's hands ready to boost her over again.
"Damn Dash. Your getting heavy," Helping her over to the ledge Dasha however stopped mid way looking down at Duncan.
"Did you just call me fat?" She narrowed her eyes while Duncan struggled.
"No, I'm calling you a fatass... JUST GET OVER THE FENCE DAMNIT!"
Making a mental note to herself, Dasha got over the fence and landed on the other side weapon raised. Looking for the controls to the gate Dasha looked around but her partner's voice caught her attention.
"COVER NOW! RPG!"
Leaping from her spot over the fence a rocket landed only a few feet where she stood but if she had stay her armor wouldn't have done anything to protect her from that explosion. Duncan fired at the Rocket launcher wielding merc as best he could.
"GET TO THE CONTROL ROOM!"
"ON IT!"
Rushing over the walkway, the bear lept forward into the control room while her partner provided covering fire. Grabbing the switch for the gate she didn't hesitate to open it allowing Duncan to move in gun still hot from the agro he was putting down.
"Where is he?" Dasha asked while Duncan reloaded laying down behind cover.
"Catwalk left. Can't hit shit with this damn thing," Dasha pulled out her pistol and leaned against the Russian took a breath. "How many rockets does he fucking have?"
"Sush," Dasha ordered as she saw the rocket sniper's reflection in a fallen metal plate laying across the entrance she had just entered.
He was finished reloading, there was only one shot at this or they were both dead.
"Duncan?"
"Yeah?"
"Jack-in-the-box?" Duncan looked at her for a moment.
"How can you think about food at this- OH! Wait... I'm in the box aren't I?" The bear nodded. "Of course.
Shimming over to the open window to the control room, Duncan took a breath with his weapon ready.
"Ready?"
"Da,"
Flipping out Duncan gave a way cry while firing wildly at the merc who took aim at the human's wild aim not noticing Dasha leaping out from the room with her pistol out. In a heartbeat, she fired and hit the head of the merc dead on before she even touched the ground. The dead merc fell back but the RPG he held onto fired off into the unstable support above him causing the entire thing to come crashing down on him and any other mercs providing him assistance.
Duncan grunted but nodded at the result that Dasha had caused.
"Nice shot!" Duncan complimented to which she smiled getting up.
"<Thanks> Let's get moving," Nodding in agreement Duncan ran forward as the two descended the stairs to get out of the unfinished building.
However, they were meant with mercenary reinforcements and followed by a large beast of merc. A German shepherd wearing high-quality armor stepped forward large ballistic goggles covered the canine's eyes as he took his cigarette from his lips and crushed it under his armored boot. Placing his helmet on he slid the shotgun he had on his back into his hand and stared down the two PMCs before him.
"Damn this guy ain't kidding around," Duncan commented.
"Just shoot him!" Dasha shouted to which her partner gladly responded to quickly dealing with the merc grunts but the cheap ammo they were using wasn't doing shit to the dog's armor.
Laughing the Dog fired a shell completely punching a hole in the concrete wall Dasha was using for cover. Duncan flinched at another shell and punched through the cover causing Duncan to growl.
"That's it," Grabbing his grenade and threw it over the wall at the dog, who as the human expected covered his face with his armored limb but took that moment of opportunity, Duncan vaulted over and lept onto the shotgun-wielding merc.
One hand pushed the shotgun to the other side of him while the dog fired on reflex but not giving him a moment the small human took aim at the canine's face and fired. Dead before he hit the ground Duncan smiled behind his mask as he turned to Dasha who looked at him annoyed slightly.
"That was incredibly fucking stupid," Dasha stated to which Duncan shrugged.
"Worked didn't it,"
Shaking her head she followed up.
"Let's get going,"
"Hold on let me get this," Duncan pulled up the dog's shotgun and shell belt as he racked in a fresh shell while laughing. "Now we're cooking. An actual gun,"
"Duncan! Now!"
"Alright! Alright!" Throwing the shell's over his body Duncan ran up after Dasha to a closed lift door. "Nuh-uh! No way I'm dying in a box,"
"Do you see another way down?"
"You're supposed to avoid elevators in case of a fire!"
"And you avoid being a <bullshit> in a warzone! Get in the goddamn lift!" Dasha shouted to which Duncan uneasily agreed.
