I had been awake for days it felt like, I was just tired of these bandages. They were so damn itchy and the sound they made when they rubbed together was enough to drive any man insane. I was grateful when the day finally came. The doctors were going to remove my bandages. My family was there to see it, to see my new face, knowing the incident and healing would've changed it forever. As the doctors slowly removed the bandages from my face. Though I couldn't see them, I could feel my family's eyes burning into me, watching as the final bandage was removed. "Let's hope for the best." A doctor commented as he lifted away the base cloth that lay beneath the bandages.
Mom screamed at the sight, Lui and Dad just stared, awestruck. "What? What happened to my face?" I asked, jolting from my bed and running to the bathroom. I looked into the mirror and saw what caused my family's mixed reactions. My face. It was horrible; my lips were burnt a deep shade of red, skin a pure white, once brown hair had been singed pitch black. Slowly, I pulled a shaky hand up to this new face, it had a leathery feel to it now. I looked at my family, that had followed me, all crowded in the doorway, then back to the mirror. "Jeff," said Lui, "it's not that bad." I turned to him, "Not that bad? It's perfect!" Everyone was clearly surprised by my quick acceptance. I knew it was strange but it was that sensation I had when I fought Randy and his goons was back. However this time, the feeling was more comforting and I welcomed it. I started laughing uncontrollably, his mother noticed Jeff's left eye and hand were twitching. "Ummm.....Jeff are you okay?" "Okay? I've never felt happier! Haha hahaha haaaaaaaa, look at me! This face goes with me perfectly!" I said feeling drawn back to the mirror, touching my new face. Mom turned to the doctor, filled with worry, and asked a question no mother would want to ask, "Doctor, is my son alright, you know, in the head?" The doctor had seen cases like these and I guess he assumed   I would get better with time. "Oh yes, this behavior is common for patients who've had to take large amounts of pain killers over an extended period. However, if this behavior doesn't change in a few weeks, bring him back and we'll give him a psychological evaluation."
As the doctors and my parents were talking,  I saw (y/n) slipped in from the doorway. I knew she'd been standing there during the whole ordeal, unnoticed, unheard, ignored in everyone's confusion. Just like when she came to see me while I lay bandaged, trying to heal. The doctors wouldn't allow her to see me, family only they said, but she did it anyway, always finding some way to sneak in. She was my friend.
"Jeff? Are you okay?" Her quiet voice was so soft like she was afraid her words could break me. I walked over to hug her, smiling all the way. "Yup, like my face? I do, I just love it!" She stared at me, I don't know why but I broke into another fit of laughter. "Lui, what's wrong with him?" She asked concerned but I could see the faintest hint of a smile on her face. He relayed what the doctors said and hung his head, "If I was there this never would have happened." (y/n) hugged Lui, trying to reassure him it wasn't his fault. "I was there and I couldn't have stopped it." (y/n), Lui, and I continued to talk until a doctor took notice of (y/n)'s presence. "Oh no no no, not you again! How many times do you have to be told, just family? (mispronounced name) get out!!!" Dad stepped in front of (y/n) and corrected the doctor," Doc, her name is (y/n) and she's my niece. So she is family."
I was given clothes by mom and dad, Ironically the exact replicas of what I wore the day of the fire, the day everything changed. I smiled as I changed into them and was permitted to leave the hospital. (y/n) hugged Lui, thanked my parents for their help, and turned to me. She hugged me, whispering in my ear, "Jeffry Woods, I think your face is beautiful.", then kissed my cheek.
