YOU WERE GOING TO GET MARRIED??
I'm making this a two parter. It's connected to the Damian meet Wally story I did.
It had been a month or so since Wally returned from the dead and Bruce insisted that he stay a night in the manor to get to know the family more. Wally was excited for the free meal that he knew would be the best since Alfred would be making it. Dick, however, was apprehensive about the evening. His family was unpredictable at times and he didn't want Wally to feel uncomfortable. He didn't want to lose him over a family dinner.
In the car, Wally could tell by the grip Dick had on the steering wheel that something was eating at him. "It's just a dinner," Wally stated. He couldn't understand what the big deal was. He'd known Dick for years and just because he'd missed three years of his life didn't mean he'd forgotten the quirks of his family. "I know but Damian is abrasive and very blunt, Tim always picks fights with him and Jason is just plain rude half the time. Not to mention Bruce," Dick ranted. Wally chuckled to himself. "So your family is full of fighters? I can handle that." Dick sighed and laughed lightly. "Relax and we'll have fun," Wally told him.
"Not too much fun, there are children present," he reminded the ginger.
"We can be quiet~."
"With a kid that was trained to be an assassin in the house? I am not risking traumatising him like that." The speedster groaned and fell back onto his seat. "If you're good tonight there might be a surprise when we get home." He smirked as Wally shot up with a grin.
"I love you."
They pulled into the drive way and Dick knocked on the door. Inside they could hear yelling. "You've got to be kidding me," Dick muttered. The door opened to reveal a tired butler and a small black haired boy pulling at a taller similar looking boy's features. "Master Dick, Master Wallace, welcome." he greeted. He seemed thankful for Dick's arrival.
"Damian get off Tim right now!" Bruce shouted. "We have company!" Dick rubbed the bridge of his nose with a sigh. "Hi, Alfie." They walked in as Bruce had begun to attempt to pull off the younger boy. "Damian get off of him right now or so help me I will break all your swords," Dick warned. Damian tutted and jumped off of him. "All I did was ask if Jon was more than a friend! What the hell?" Tim shouted, rubbing his cheeks.
"You implied something Drake."
"What's got Dickie-bird's knickers in a twist?" Jason asked, disappointed the fight hadn't lasted longer. "Nothing! You're so infuriating," he muttered. Wally simply laughed at him.
"Dinner is ready sir," Alfred called from the dining room.
"Thank you Alfred. I want no more fighting from you two," Bruce answered. Wally grinned and pulled on Dick's wrist. "Come on I'm starving," he complained, making Damian glare at him.
"Grayson, you never mentioned how impatient he is," Damian stated.
"Play nice Dami, speedsters need a lot of food to keep up their energy since they burn their calories faster," Dick explained.
"Enough talking more eating," Wally said, losing patience and deciding to speed off with Dick's wrist firmly in his grip. He got a laugh out of Dick but Damian definitely didn't approve.
Dick sat beside Wally with Jason on the other side of Wally. He didn't want him to get all the food. Just because he was a guest didn't mean he could get all the food. Damian sat right in front of Wally, continuing his glare and Tim sat a good few places away from Damian. Of course, Bruce took the seat at the head of the table.
"Someone's nervous," Wally whispered to Dick. He crossed his arms in a pout.
"I am not nervous."
"You're tense so you are nervous and I'm telling you to relax." He planted a kiss on the younger's cheek, making Jason gag and Damian glare. Tim was too busy typing on his phone. "Let them have their fun Jason," Bruce told him. Jason rolled his eyes and pulled out his gun to clean it. "What happened to the no killing rule?" Wally asked nervously.
"I use rubber bullets. You think he'd let me kill people on the daily?" Jason said with a laugh. He loved to see the surprised faces he got when he pulled out his .38 special. However, his gun was swiftly taken away by Alfred as he placed a plate of food in front of him. "No guns at the table."
Damian stared at Wally as he ate his food in slight disgust yet intrigue. What did Dick see in this man child? Dick was a man of unconditional love, yes, but that just left him open for any attack. Perhaps Wally was playing a long game to get an inheritance or their relationship had a darker undertone. "Since West has returned will you be taking down the hologram?" Damian asked, not looking up from his plate as he cut his steak. At this, Wally shuffled awkwardly. They hadn't really talked about the ins and outs of him coming back. Just mentioning the hologram made his stomach churn with guilt that he had for putting his family and friends through losing him. "We've deactivated it, yes. I'm surprised you remembered visiting him," Dick said with a smile.
"I remember you crying," Damian replied. The smile was changed to an awkward one as Dick looked away. He wasn't very open about how much he grieved over Wally to said hero. Tim kicked his younger brother under the table with a sharp look. "Let's not dwell on that," Dick said with an awkward laugh. "When did he show you that?" Wally asked. Dick said he hadn't been there for the best part of a year. "Three months and two hours ago," Damian answered. He turned to Dick to say something but he quickly cut him off. "Great memory Damian but let's keep to using it for work not our personal lives."
The conversation was quickly changed to the science fair that Tim had won and more domestic things. It was obvious that Tim was trying to impress both his brother and his lover but they didn't mind. The evening was picking up until Damian posed a question. "When are you going to marry Grayson, West? He said you had planned to get engaged." Dick choked on his water and Wally gulped nervously. They hadn't told anyone about their plans. "Excuse me?" Wally asked as Dick tried to recover. "He's only been back for a month," he stated with a wave of unusual anger in his voice. The question had warranted many reactions from the family. Jason was shocked that the relationship had been that serious, Tim smiled, Alfred was staring with no discernible reaction and Bruce was, well, Bruce. "You were going to marry him? When?" Bruce exclaimed.
"Who cares? Who's going to be there? Would you have two weddings, one for civilians and another for heroes?"
"Dick, you were planning to get married at eighteen!" Jason shouted.
"That is quite young Grayson," Damian commented, returning to eating.
"They'd been dating for like five years," Tim reminded them.
"You weren't going to ask for my permission?" Bruce exclaimed.
"I can't believe you told Damian about that, what were you thinking?" Wally asked.Dick felt his breath leave his chest faster than he could take it in. He felt ganged up on by everyone, even the butler who had only given a small look of disappointment. "Bathroom break!" he shouted, shooting out of the room. Tim kicked Damian under the table again. "Well done jack ass."
"I didn't do anything. I simply asked a question." Wally sighed, gaining their attention.
"To answer your question Damian, I don't know. I put him through a lot and we still need to work it out." Damian nodded and they resumed dinner only it was quiet and awkward.
The bathroom door slammed shut and Dick splashed water on his face. He concentrated on breathing right. He hadn't talked about getting married with Wally yet. He wanted to, he really did, but he didn't know what to do about it. They were practically a married couple already just without the title. When he found out Wally was back, he'd taken the two rings and put them on a necklace he hid under his shirt. He wanted to wait until the right time but Wally never seemed into it. He needed advice and he wasn't going to get it here. He snapped his fingers, knowing exactly who to turn to. He pulled out his phone and called her instantly. "Hi Selina, can I steal you for a bit?" he asked.
"I have plenty of time for my little bird. What's the problem?" she answered.
"Well I'm kinda hiding out in a bathroom and I'm bugging out," he explained. She hummed in response, wanting him to continue. "You know how Wally came back?" She hummed yes. "Before he "died" we were planning on getting married." He waited a moment whilst she shrieked, "You were what?" down the phone.
"I know, I know I was eighteen but I still want to. I've always wanted to. I have the rings and I want to propose but he just doesn't seem into it anymore. What do I do?" he asked. Dick knew he sounded as desperate as he felt. There was a sigh. "Dickie he's only been back for a month, perhaps he's trying to get his life together," she answered.
"But shouldn't I be part of that life he's sorting out?"
"You are but there is more to it than just you." He groaned loudly in frustration and slumped back. "Here's some advice. Give him the rings and give him control. When he's ready he'll be able to propose," she explained. Dick brightened up,
"Thank you so much!" Selina chuckled.
"You're welcome. If you do get married don't leave me out of the planning. Oh and get out of the bathroom faster than you got out of the closet." Dick laughed and hung up.
After hanging up, there was a knock on the door. He knew it was Wally by its height and strength. If it had been any one else the door would be on the floor. "Dickie, can we talk?" Wally asked. "Give me a second." He jumped up and opened the door.
"Hey," Wally said awkwardly.
"Hey," Dick repeated. "I know it was childish to run from dinner but I needed a few minutes to compose myself." His voice was sterner and stable. He was ready for a future together and if it meant waiting decades for Wally, he would. Wally stared at him in confusion and worry. Dick took off the necklace and placed it in his hands with a smile. "We were kids when we said we wanted to do this but I still want a life with you that involves getting married. I'm ready but you're not and I don't mind. When you are ready, you can propose." Wally looked at the rings then back to him. "You'd put this on hold for me to be ready?" Dick kissed him and nodded. Wally happily wrapped his arms around his waist, putting their foreheads together. "I'm sure you're dying to get dessert so let's get back," Dick said, moving away from him.
"I love you so much," Wally said, putting his hand around Dick's waist.
"I love you too."
They walked back to the table and Bruce shot a glare to Damian once they sat down. He huffed and rolled his eyes. "I deeply regret causing you both great upset," he apologised. They smiled at him with their hands intertwined. "Don't worry about it Dami, you were just being curious. I want to hear no more about it though," he said sitting back down. Bruce gave him a "we're-fucking-talking-about-this-later" look. He nodded and turned back to Damian. "Other than that question, what else did you want to know about Wally?"
"Does West's family have any hereditary or genetic conditions?" Wally choked on his food as Dick face palmed. "Of course you wouldn't ask how we met or something."
Bonus
Dick walked downstairs to the stairs and found Wally already stuffing pancakes into his mouth. "Morning Wally," Dick greeted, kissing him on the cheek.
"Morning babe," he said with a mouthful of food. Dick sat down then suddenly noticed the black eye on his lover's face. "What happened?" he shrieked. At this time, Damian came in with a smug smile on his face. "You know how we went to bed and you went to sleep straight away because you were exhausted?" Dick nodded. "Well at around dawn Damian dragged me out of the bed and punched me in the face because I apparently treated you like a piece of meat before we went to bed." Dick raised an eyebrow. Wally treated him like a God half the time. The other half he was treating him like a best friend. "First, you didn't do anything wrong. Second, Damian why were you in our room and third, how in the world did he treat me like a piece of meat?" Dick asked. It was way too early to deal with this. Damian looked at him as though the answers were obvious. "Need I remind you that at ten o'clock West came up behind you in the kitchen, slapped your ass and said, and I quote, "what a fat ass." I was in your room to teach him never to touch you like that again." Dick blushed a little and Wally just smiled at him proudly.
"You do have a fat ass," he stated.
"See he is disrespectful!" Damian protested.
"He means it in a good way Damian and you shouldn't be using that sort of language," Damian growled at Wally. He now had a new rival for Dick's attention.
