ode to young me
I was playing around on my computer and found an old file of YJ stories I wrote when I was younger. So, to really feel nolstaga I will bring them to light.
Roy was sitting in his flat in Star City. He hated the small place but it would do him until he got enough money to move somewhere nice. His mind wandered to Wally and Dick. A guilty feeling told him that he shouldn't have left them like that. It wasn't fair that they didn't get to see him anymore. What hurt him most was the look on Dick's face when he walked out. He looked so sad and scared for the future. How could he have done that to him? The kid had lost family members before and him walking out the way he did probably made Dick think back to those times. His cell phone rang, stirring him from his thoughts, and he glanced at the caller ID. Seeing it was Bruce, he answered it. "Roy I was wondering if I could ask for a favor," Bruce started. Straight to the point as always. "Depends on the favor Bruce," replied Roy. If it was anything to do with Green Arrow or his 'niece' he was going to throw his phone at the wall. "I need you to look after Dick for a while, two weeks at the most," Bruce said. Roy grinned with joy. This was perfect. He could finally make up for what he did. Although there was one thing that bugged him. "Why can't he stay at the Mountain?" he asked nonchalantly.
"I don't want him staying there whilst he's mourning. The team have only just learnt of his identity and won't be much help," Bruce answered. Roy looked to the calendar, confused, then realized this was the week Dick lost his parents. "When do you want me to pick him up?" he asked. "Preferably after school today, three o'clock. He's been given work in advance so he won't be attending school," he replied. "And Roy, he's still upset with you. I wouldn't expect him to forgive you just for showing up." Bruce warned. Roy sighed, of course. He couldn't just expect Dick to be cool with him after everything. "Yeah I know. I'll be there soon," he replied, hanging up.
At two forty, he pulled up outside the prep school that Dick went to. Roy thought it was too snooty for Dick but he had to go. Bruce's son couldn't go to some public school with normal kids. Suddenly, the wind picked up and a red headed boy appeared in front of him. "Wally?" Roy asked as the wind returned to normal and he fixed his hair. "The one and only," Wally replied with a smirk but it quickly faded. "You didn't think I'd just let you come back after you hurt us the way you did? You really upset Dick and I. He thought he did something wrong. So to avoid that problem, I'm staying with you." he added. No way he would let Roy hurt them again, especially not this week. "I know I messed up but I'm trying. How bad was he?" Roy asked meekly, not liking a fifteen year old scolding him. "Oh so now you care? He didn't sleep much it you have to know. He ended up going around Gotham without Bruce. Thank God nothing happened to him." he answered.
A bell rang and students began to swarm out the doors. Artemis, Barbara and Dick all walked out, the latter looking rather depressed. They knew something had happened just by seeing him. When Dick saw Roy he shrank back a little and went up to him, Artemis behind him as Barbara got on her bike home. "Hi Wally. Roy," he greeted, faking a smile. Artemis shot the archer a glare then hugged Dick. The team knew about this week. It had slipped out when he was having a particularly bad nightmare. "I'll see you on our next mission Dick. Kaldur and I are staying at the Mountain if you want to talk to all of us," she said to Dick, waving him goodbye and smiling at Wally. "See you later!" she added. They watched her leave.
"So Dick did you want to do anything specific this week?" Roy asked.
"Not really, I'll probably have a few missions but that's it," he replied. "Do you mind if we head off now?" he added. Roy nodded and watched him get in the car.
"I think having you here is going to be helpful," Roy muttered to Wally. He nodded and got in the car.
Whilst in the car, Dick was quiet as Wally started to practically scream Titanium by Sia. Roy winced as the chorus came around and thanked every God he didn't have super hearing. "Wally shut up!" Roy shouted. Wally just laughed at him and carried on. Dick stared out the window and watched the passing buildings that he ran along in the cover of night. He wondered what his parents would think of him. They'd probably shout at him but then hug him for doing this. His cousin wouldn't have believed him at first then would want in. His aunt and uncle would probably worry about him but let him carry on. "Dick, are you okay?" Roy asked, peering into his rear view mirror. "Yeah, just thinking about stuff," he replied. Dick could feel the tension between them, knowing he had to get it out of the way. "Okay we need to address the elephant in the room. Or car rather."
"Alright, one second. WALLY SHUT THE FUCK UP!" He shut up and Roy turned down the radio.
"I know Bruce told you I was still upset, and I am, but you left because you felt that was right for you. I know you did it out of anger and you didn't mean to shut us out like you did. It just hurt to lose you," he explained. Roy could feel a pain in his chest and looked into Dick's sapphire eyes. "I'm sorry Dickie. I can make it up to you I promise," Roy said. Dick laughed a little and stared at the eldest of their trio. "I forgive you so there's no need. Just don't do it again, alright? I don't think I can take something like that again at this rate." Wally smiled, joined by Roy. "You also owe me for those arrows I made you."
That night, Dick and Wally had been sent out on a mission. Well Wally had but Dick insisted on going with him. Something about not even being that sad had allowed him to go. Roy had been reluctant to let him go but Dick cashed in the favor. After a couple of hours, they returned although Dick was dependent on Wally keeping him up. "What happened?" Roy exclaimed, letting them in immediately. "M'gann had to knock him out because she was trying to go undercover. It worked but he's baring he brunt of it. Still hasn't fully woken up yet." He nodded and picked Dick up, carrying to the couch. "Watch him whilst I call the girls, M'gann was worried she killed him." Wally said. He left the room so not to disturb Dick. Dick groaned and clung to the warm mass he was leaning on. "Roy?" he asked, looking up at a fuzzy ginger. "But I was with M'gann. Wait, I need to warn the team!" he shouted, getting up quickly. He placed a hand on his head, almost falling forward. "The team is fine, she was just pretending," Roy explained, sitting him back down. "She was?"
"Is Dick awake? M'gann said if he hasn't woken up we need to call the League," Wally called from the other room. "I'm awake," Dick replied.
"He's awake, yes M'gann he's fine. You didn't kill him."
Dick sighed and curled up closer to Roy. This and his family's death was just making the day harder. "I hate this week already," he mumbled, hiding his face in the older's chest.
"No shit." Roy replied, feeling Dick begin to cry.
"Don't tell the team I cried or I'll make you disappear," Dick told him suddenly. Roy could only laugh. "I won't idiot."
