Chapter 8
Devin was laying on her back on her bed, picking at the hem of her dress nervously. She was dressed up for the dinner with Jean, Scott, and Alex. She had been staring at her ceiling for a while before Alex walked in, he furrowed his eyebrows at her and walked over to lay next to her, causing the bed to dip towards him.
"You alright?"
"Do worms have feelings?"
"Do...What?" He looked over to her, she glanced over at him before looking back to the ceiling. "Now's not the time for questions, Socrates. Get up, we're going on a date." He sat up.
"Double."
"What?"
"Double date." Devin looked at him, he turned his head to look at her. "We're going on a double date, not just a date." She sat up as well.
"Yeah, I know." Alex sounded like he was trying to convince himself of that more than anything. "I know it's a double date, it's just quicker to say date. Are you going to be like this the entire night?" He raised an eyebrow.
"The life of the party you mean? Yeah, I am," she told him with a blank tone.
"You alright? We can cancel if you want." He rested his right hand on her knee.
"Don't cancel." She shook her head. "I'm just thinking about the training I'm doing with Hank and Charles, the ones with the plants." He nodded, knowing what she was talking about. "They've been acting weird, ever since the night you came back drunk. They've been avoiding me outside of training time, I guess it's because I yelled at them, but it still hurts you know?" She looked at Alex who was staring at her.
"I'm sure they are just worried that it won't work the way they hoped." He gave her a supporting smile before kissing her temple. "We should go, I don't want to keep the others waiting." He patted her knee before standing up, she continued sitting.
"I never thought you and I would be in this position." She looked up to him before standing up.
"Ready?"
"Yeah." She nodded as he kissed her forehead again, a small smile on her face.
"Okay, let's go." Alex began walking down the hallway towards the stairs.
"Hold my hand," she told him.
"Why?"
"Hold my hand dammit, we have to make this look convincing," she hissed at him, he smirked and grabbed hold of her left hand.
"You're intense," he told her as they walked down the stairs.
"So I've been told." She smiled.
"About time," Scott said from the bottom of the stairs, holding onto the end of the banister. "I thought you were making me a niece or nephew you guys took that long." Devin rolled her eyes.
"He's in the basement, I haven't finished him yet."
He faked a laugh at her. "Can we go now?" He seemed to be acting in a nervous, yet rude, manner.
"Yeah, we can go, the car is unlocked." Alex nodded as both Jean and Scott held hands and walked out.
"Your brother needs to get laid, damn." Alex laughed.
"That's my brother you're talking about, kinda gross to think about that." He looked at Devin while they both walked out of the mansion.
"Just saying, he's very stressed." She pointed out as Alex closed the door and walked to the car, opening the passenger side for her. "Thanks," she mumbled quietly, a small smile spread on her face as he closed the door and walked around to his side, getting in and starting the car.

"You didn't tell me it was karaoke night," Devin said to Alex as they walked into the diner.
"Good lord, don't do it." He shook his head. The music getting louder as they all walked in more. "You're terrible, you always put fake accents on and sing really badly, I can't tell if it's on purpose or not!" He yelled slightly over the music.
"I'm addicted and I admit I need help." She shrugged.
"Our table is over here." Scott patted her shoulder to get her attention before leading both Alex and Devin over to one of the tables, away from the karaoke area and nearer to the bar. There were few things that truly weren't meant to exist. One of them was not being able to embarrass Scott and Alex immensely while trying to sing along to a song Devin has never heard before.
"You did this on purpose, Scotty." She lightly punched his shoulder.
"Yeah, oh no, I've saved our ears from bleeding, what have I done?" He grinned back.
"Words hurt, little boy, words hurt." She shook her head.
"I'm taller than you?"
"I'm older." She shrugged.
"Yeah. That doesn't make any sense," he said as he sat next to Jean in the booth. Devin sat opposite Jean, Alex on her right.
"Life doesn't make sense." She shrugged again.
"My stress levels elevate when I around you." He took off his jacket just as a waiter came by with menus.
"Bring on the chimichangas." Devin shook her shoulders excitedly, Jean laughing at her choice of movement, Scott looked over at Jean, a smile on his face before looking down at the menu, biting his lip to stop himself from smiling too wide.
"No, no chimichangas." Alex shook his head. "They don't even do chimichangas here, at least I don't think so..." He quickly checked the menu.
"They don't." Jean shook her head, Devin looked up at her and grinned. "She just wanted you to freak out." Jean looked to Alex who put his menu down slightly and stared at Devin.
"Rude."
Devin shrugged. "You love me."
"Not by choice." He shook his head while looking over the menu.
"I have feelings." She glared playfully at him.
"Yeah, feelings, not talkings. So shh." He put a finger to his lips.
"Hey, Scott." Devin smirked, Alex's eyes widened as Devin looked over to Scott who lifted his head up.
"Yeah?"
"Want me to buy you alcohol?" Scott looked to Alex then to Devin again.
"N-Wait, seriously?"
"Why not?"
"Is this a trick question?"
"Are there chimichangas on the menu?"
"No?" He looked down at the menu before quickly looking up, realising what she meant. "Oh, are you sure?"
"Yeah, why not?" She shrugged her shoulders. "J, do you want me to buy you some as well?" Jean looked up at Devin. "No, it's not a trick question if I'm buying for the little boy I might as well buy for you." Jean looked to Scott before looking back to Devin.
"Okay? But I feel like this is a trick..." Devin rolled her eyes.
"I'm a nice person." She groaned.
"Hardly." Scott laughed. Devin was about to reply when the waiter came by to take the orders.
-
After a while, when they all had their food delivered and their drinks, Scott had ended up finishing his drink a lot quicker than he thought. Jean and Alex still had half of their drinks left, while Devin only had a little bit left. Scott said he was going to get another one and Alex mentioned that he would go up as well to get Devin one and to pay for the alcohol, considering Scott couldn't.
Alex and Scott both got up, not before Alex kissed her forehead, and walked over to the bar talking to Scott. Jean took this time to shuffle out of her side and sit next to Devin. Devin took a sip of her beer while looking at Jean's sullen face.
"You okay, little red?" Devin asked, nudging Jean's shoulder with hers lightly.
"Yeah, I guess." She shrugged.
"What's up?" She placed the cup down.
"It's about Scott, I don't know if he like likes me the way I like him..."
"I'm pretty sure he does." She nodded and looked over to the boys, Alex looking back, giving her a wink, causing Devin to smile.
"You don't know what it's like to love someone who only sees you as a friend," Jean told Devin with the shake of her head as they both sat side-by-side, Devin looked at her before glancing back to Alex, the smile dropping from her face, and the truth lodged a bitter taste in her mouth.
"I think I do."
