Chapter 4

Charles and Hank kept pestering Devin about seeing if there were more to her powers than just being able to heal herself. Hank had suggested that maybe it was possible for Devin to be able to somehow heal others, not just herself, and since Charles is all about progressing and learning more about oneself, he was on board with the whole following her around and trying to persuade her, no matter where she was or what she was doing.

"Charles, I swear if you follow me into the bathroom I'm going to shove the soap bar so far down your throat that-"

"No, no, there's no need for that." He smiled kindly at her, he didn't seem to care about the threat she just made, something was up with him. He knew something.

"Okay, but if there's something you wanted to talk to me about-"

"Yes, there is actually-"

"Not involving my mutation." She held up her hand up to stop him from talking, he tried to stop himself from grinning, shifting his weight to one side while trying not to bump into her with his wheelchair as she stopped walking.

"It's not about your mutation, although I would like to discuss that with you in length at some point," he told her.

"Okay, well, I'm going to pee, alone." She pointed at him. "And then we can discuss whatever the hell it is that you seem overly invested in. Deal?" She raised an eyebrow at him.

"Deal." He nodded back at her. "I'll wait out here." He smiled before Devin walked into the bathroom, locking the door. "I could always talk to you while you're in there you know," she heard him through the door.

"Charles, no girl likes being heard peeing, it's uncomfortable. We'll talk when I'm done."

Charles didn't respond to that and left her to do what she needed. When she was washing her hands the lock on the door unlocked and Charles opened the door. Devin looked at him like he was crazy but he didn't seem to notice.

"Okay-"

"Dude!" Devin yelled. "I'm not finished in here." She stood there with the water running over her soapy hands.

"So, about Alex-" Her eyes widened at him.

"Charles, we are not talking about this, and I'm not done in here."

"Technically you're no longer peeing so, yes, you are." She groaned and huffed before continuing to wash her hands, with the new company of Charles and his large wheelchair taking up most of the space in the bathroom. "Hank and myself have come up with an idea on how you can use your ability to heal others, it's a long shot but-" He trailed off a bit as she reached over him to get to the towels to dry her hands. "We think it should work." He finished. Devin placed the towel down on the counter top and stared at the ground.

"Is there a reason why you're so adamant that I learn how to heal others, Charles?" She furrowed her eyebrows as she waited for a response. Devin glanced at him, his mouth kept opening and closing with a nervous puff of laughter. "Say like, I don't know, healing you?" He gave her a small smile.

They both stayed silent for a while, with Charles just looking at her with a blank look on his face. It seemed like he was going over something in his head or talking to someone else. If that was the reason that he wanted her to try this then it wouldn't be a problem. She wanted to be able to help him if he let her. She would be more than happy to heal him if he wanted to be able to walk again.

"No," he breathed out. "It's lovely to know that you thought of me, but that's not what I was implying." He shook his head. Devin could sense that that wasn't entirely true but gave him a small nod anyway before walking out of the bathroom, Charles following her. "I'm talking about missions." Devin slowed down for him to catch up to her side.

"What do you mean?"

"If you are able to heal others then you might be able to help your teammates out in the field, helping them if they're down and injured." They were now walking side by side as they went to the basement. "Hank has set a few test trials and tests up to see if we can figure this out, only if you're up to it." He smiled gently as they got into the elevator. Devin groaned quietly, she thought she left tests behind when she finished with school and learning. She wasn't exactly looking forward to the test trials that laid ahead for her.

"The last thing I want to do is hurt someone, or let them be in pain if there was a chance that I could help them. You know that," she told him as she leaned against the wall of the elevator. "No one deserves to be in pain." Devin looked down to the floor.

"And I agree." He looked over to her.

"Then I'll do it." She nodded. "I'll do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes." Devin stood up straighter. "I want to be able to actually help people." He frowned slightly.

"You do help people?" The doors opened and they both got out. Charles sounded confused, unsure as to why she felt that way.

"No, I help myself. The others here, they can do great things, amazing things, things that can benefit others in time of need. What I do...What I do is heal myself. My mutation is selfish, I don't help other people, I only help myself."

Charles looked in front of him as they both made it to one of the labs, the doors opened and they both went inside. Hank looked up from one of the machines, smiling, but frowned when he saw the look on Devin's face. The look of helplessness, one he remembers Charles having when it was only he and himself in the mansion. A look of pain.

Training with Charles and Hank had been exhausting. Hank took blood samples, saliva samples—which she wasn't exactly sure of the reason for—and other samples that he believed could be helpful. Charles had gone into her mind, trying to find any reason as to how her healing was triggered. Devin was forced to go through exercise tests, scans, and some form of hypnosis for some reason. She was sure Charles just wanted to try some new magic tricks.

"Have a fun day, princess?" Alex asked as he walked outside into the courtyard to sit next to her. Devin was laying down on the grass looking up at the night sky, the stars being the only thing to help distract her, Alex fitted himself down beside her. She couldn't find herself to answer.

What if she was wasting Charles and Hank's time with a theory that might not even work? She'd be left with the nagging and hollowing feeling of being useless and unable to help. Continuing her life with a selfish mutation, the constant thought of being a disappointment to Charles and everyone else around her.

Alex noticed her silence and turned his head to face her, he sat up a bit more when he noticed the tears rolling down the side of her face as she looked up in silence.

"Hey," he spoke softly. "Hey, what's wrong?" She closed her eyes and let out a shaky breath.

"I'm just tired of being useless," her voice sounded broken as it got quieter.

"You're not useless." He shook his head. "Why would you ever feel that way?" He watched as Devin wiped her face with the sleeve of her shirt.

"Because I can't save people, I can't help people, I can't do anything for anyone." More tears rolled down her face as the feeling of emptiness continued to linger.

"That's not true, and deep down you know that. I mean, deep down past the stone-cold wall of ice around your heart-"

"Don't mess with me right now, Alex, I cry easily." Devin shook her head. Alex let out a small laugh before she rolled to face him. She placed her head on his chest and wrapped an arm over him, curling up into him. He exhaled before wrapping his arms around her, laying back down completely. His mutation warming her and himself up slightly as the wind blew cold air at them both. "You make a good pillow," she mumbled out quietly before he kissed the top of her head.

"Thank you, princess." He smiled to himself before looking back up to the sky.

Later on that night Devin was in the common room with Peter, Ororo, Jubilee and Kurt. The others had decided to go out to some party, or something along those lines. Alex invited her but understood that she was emotionally and physically drained from training, so he just kissed her forehead and told her he'd be back later.

"If you think for a second that I won't beat you at this, well my friend, you are mistaken," Devin heard Peter speak up while Ororo scoffed.

"You tried to kill my team last time, I will never stop my quest for vengeance, you're going down, Pete," she told him as they both started up another level of the game they had been playing for an hour.

"I need a comeback." Peter tapped Devin's leg as she sat in the small single seater Warren claimed as his.

"I'd rather stick a knife in my neck," she told him as she played on her game boy.

"Help me out," he whined while Ororo laughed.

"Dude, I'm kinda in the zone here," she mumbled as she continued to play her game.

"Kurt!" Peter spoke loudly, the little blueberry looked up from his book and smiled, not entirely sure what was going on. "You follow me on Instagram, but will you follow me into battle?" He held up a controller to Kurt who raised an eyebrow. Jubilee was sitting next to Ororo painting her nails while trying to read a book as well.

"What's Instagram?" Peter groaned and placed the controller back down.

"That didn't help me at all." He huffed.

"You're going down, and you know it." Ororo smirked as the level started up.

They were slamming their fingers down on the controllers forcefully, occasionally screaming and yelling at each other or the game. Devin rolled her eyes at them with a smile and continued to play the game boy. Hank shuffled into the room, Devin looked up and smiled at him, which he returned and motioned his head to the hallway. She placed the game boy down on a small side table and walked out of the room unnoticed by the others.

"Everything okay?" She asked worriedly.

"Yeah." He nodded. "Are you up for some more tests?" He asked hopefully, she let out a small sigh, she wasn't exactly ready, but he just seemed too excited. Devin, regretfully, nodded her head at him. "Great, let's go down to the lab, Charles is already there." She nodded her head again and began to walk with him. "So, the Professor tells me that you're worried that you won't be able to do good for others if this doesn't work?" He glanced over to her.

"Uh, yeah..." She scratched the back of her head as she cleared her throat and looked down to the ground.

"Well, you shouldn't feel that way. Even if this doesn't work, you're still one of the most helpful mutants here. I know you might not feel that way, but everyone else does." They both got into the elevator.

"I don't really want to talk about this right now, can we just focus on the training?" Devin looked over to him, Hank raised his eyebrows slightly before nodding.

"Y-Yeah, of course. W-We can...We can do that, sure." She gave him a light smile as they made their way out of the elevator and to the labs.

"Great," Devin spoke quietly as they both walked through the doors to Charles.
