Chapter 2

The steam from the hot water began to fog up Devin's bathroom like a sauna, making the air slightly too moist to breathe in comfortably, but she needed to get the sweat, dirt, and blood—from her now-healed wounds—cleaned off. The water by the drain was slightly stained from the dirt and blood but slowly began to fade to a clear bubbled mess the more she cleaned. The heat from the water increased, but it made no difference to her as she turned to face the water, sighing as the water began to run down her back from her hair.

She let the water pour over her face, drowning out the rest of the world as she let her thoughts wonder. She couldn't help but think about the mission. She knew that Charles had said it was meant to be an easy one—well for the older mutants, including herself—but if anything, it was still just as hard, and just because she healed quickly it didn't mean that she wasn't able to get hurt. Devin sighed as she stepped back and turned the water off, grabbing her towel to wrap around her body and hair up, wiping the mirror only to see it fog up again.

"Probably for the best," she muttered before opening the bathroom window.

The steam was almost instantly pulled out of the room, the cold air began to sweep in and it grazed lightly against her skin, sending a shiver down her spine. Once the mirror defogged she just stared at the sunken eyes before her, blinking slowly before it began to get too cold and she needed to change into sweatpants and an old shirt—probably one of Alex's old ones.

Devin quickly dried her hair and tied it back messily, just so it was out of her face. She looked at her phone to check the time, squinting at the bright screen, it was only midnight, it was a good time to go wake Alex up to get something to eat. She put socks on and left her room, heading straight towards his, knocking on the door a couple of times before she heard a grunted response.

"I'm coming in and you better be wearing clothes." She opened his bedroom door, he was laying on his bed without a shirt on, laying back, his legs hanging off. His phone was raised above him as he scrolled down the screen. "Put a shirt on fool." Devin kicked his leg lightly before laying face first on his bed next to him. She heard him laugh lowly before he turned his head to hers. "Get food with me," she mumbled before burying her face in his blankets.

"Okay, but first this fool needs a shirt." He patted her back as he got up and went to his wardrobe, throwing his phone onto his bed.

Alex had decided to stay in the mansion even though he had his own place, he claimed it was something about helping Scott out if he needed it. But Devin knew he just didn't want to pay for his roof anymore, not like it really mattered anyway, his apartment was tiny and in a sketchy part of town. Living at the mansion was free, although she guessed that going out on missions was one way of paying Charles back for letting them all stay there, not that she minded one bit, so it was one of the main reasons why she stayed behind.

Alex paused and glanced back at her. "Hey...Is that my shirt? If so, is there a particular reason as to why you're wearing my shirt?" He grinned, resting his arms on the opened doors of the wardrobe as he faced her.

"Yes, but I don't really need to tell you. It is one of the reasons why you don't have any shirts to wear. I wear them...I mean I can always-" She began to take it off but he held a hand out to her.

"Wait, don't take it off. It looks good on you." He shrugged again. She rolled her eyes at him. Devin got up from the bed after Alex finally put a shirt on and they both made their way to the kitchen.

Warren was sitting at the counter eating a tub of ice-cream, while Scott, Jean, and Jubilee were sitting at the table eating pizza that Charles must have ordered before they all got back. Devin opened the cupboards but only saw a jar of peanuts, it was better than nothing. Alex grabbed a slice of pizza while Devin opened the jar.

"Anybody want a peanut?" She asked as she picked one out.

"Just one? A singular peanut?" Warren questioned.

"If you want two, you can." He laughed at Devin before shaking his head. "Okay, actually, how long have they been in this cupboard?" She went to find the expiration date but couldn't find it on the jar. Alex walked over and picked up the lid.

"This has been here since we were recruited," he told her with a glance before placing the lid back down, Devin picked out a peanut. "No, don't eat them." He took the jar from her and put it on the side. "Grab a slice of pizza." He motioned to the table behind him.

"Or..." She drew out before taking his from his hand. "You can grab another." She took a bite and sat down at the counter near Warren.

"Or I could grab another." Alex sighed before Scott handed him the last piece.

"Oh, you're here," Erik mumbled as he walked in, Devin turned to look at him.

"With all due respect, which is none, go to hell," she replied.

"I find you intensely irritating most days." He grabbed a drink from the fridge before turning to her with his eyebrows raised. "You realise that right?" He had a faint smile on his face but he didn't wait for her response as he left.

"Love you too!" She yelled back. Alex sat beside her on her right and laughed at her interaction with Erik. "He loves me really, he just doesn't want to come across as an actual living life form in front of others, he cries easily." She took another bite of the slightly cold piece of pizza.

A gust of wind behind them informed them of Peter entering the room.

"Thank you." He took Alex's slice of pizza, causing Alex to looked at her annoyed.

"Sorry." She handed him back his original slice, before turning around and facing Peter, he had a peanut butter sandwich in his hand and Alex's pizza in his cast-covered hand. "Nice cast." She pointed to the already completely covered cast of drawings, he looked to his arm then back up to her with an eyebrow raised before his face formed a smirk while looking Devin up and down.

"Nice...Everything." He shrugged. "I have a question regarding food," he started.

"The three-second rule doesn't apply to sticky foods," Alex piped up before Peter could ask his question. Peter huffed and looked at the sandwich before he took another bite of the pizza. Devin pointed to Alex then back to Peter.

"I agree with that." She nodded.

"What about point three seconds?" He tried to point at Devin with his bad arm and an eyebrow raised.

"The three-second rule, or any given number for that matter, doesn't apply to sticky foods, if you drop it then you've lost it. It would just be gross to eat sticky foods from the floor." Alex grimaced before glancing back to Peter, Devin, on the other hand, was still in thought about it, technically not enough germs would have collected, it would be as if it never fell to the floor in the first place.

"That changes things," she replied.

"Are you really taking his side against me?" Alex asked her. Devin shrugged at him in response.

Peter grew bored and decided to leave the room, the sandwich on the counter, his attention span didn't last very long. Warren mentioned how he was going to bed, clearly exhausted from the mission. Jubilee also decided to go to bed, pulling Jean with her, continuing some conversation that they had going from before.

"Goodnight my children," Devin called out, receiving grumbles in return.

"Night mum." Warren snorted a laugh as he left the room.

"Night guys." Jubilee smiled while Jean just yawned. Devin looked over to Scott.

"How are you feeling, Scotty?" She got up and sat at the table with him, he yawned in response before rubbing the side of his face. "Looks like you got sucker punched." He looked at her exasperatedly. She subtly pulled a face towards Alex, who stood up, knowing that she hit a nerve with him. "But I saw you out in the field, you did good." That seemed to lighten him up, he offered her a shy smile.

"He did great," Alex corrected Devin as he sat next to his brother, wrapping an arm over his shoulder. "He's better at control than I was." Scott smirked, proving that he was proud of himself for being better than his brother.

"What do you mean 'was'? You're still crap." Devin snorted, Alex kicked her leg from under the table. "Alright, fine, just relax tough guy." She rubbed her leg, the pain quickly disappearing. "You handled yourself out there really well, considering you've been distracted lately." She leaned forwards over the table. "Everything alright with you?" Scott looked at Alex, then the door, then back to Devin. "I won't blab to the others, scouts' honours." She held up three fingers on her left hand while holding her right over her heart.

"You never did scouts, cadets maybe, but not scout's..." Alex sounded confused, she violently shook her hand at him. "Alright fine, scouts' honours." She grinned in triumph.

"It's Jean..." Scott spoke quietly.

"Something happen between you two?" Alex questioned.

"Yeah, that's the thing, though, I don't know what it means." Scott huffed.

"So, it's relationship issues?" She tilted her head at him.

"I don't know if I can call it a relationship or whether we are still just friends." Devin bit her bottom lip trying to come up with something to say that could possibly help him, but so far, she had nothing.

"The best I can give you is a fake smile and dead eyes." She reached over the table to place a hand on his. "Can I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?" Alex ignored she and started to talk.

"Well, when we first met-" Alex started.

"Wait, don't use me as an example, I was a bad child." He rolled his eyes at Devin.

"When we first met, we hated each other." She hummed in response, Scott looked up, more interested in them both now rather than his own problems. "In fact, I tried to see how well she could heal and blasted her with one of my rings, I hospitalised her for about a month." She laughed at the memory.

"You're not that tough," Devin commented as Alex sat in the bunker with his brooding look slathered on his face. He sighed in annoyance when she approached him, his training gear already on. Hank and Charles had left to discuss a few things in private before resuming with Alex's training. "Sure, the leather jacket, angry expression and extreme height you hold over everyone could be considered tough, but in reality, you're just as terrified as the rest of us." She stood in front of him with her arms crossed.

"Move," he told her before looking back down to one of the training suits pieces in his hand that Hank needed to fix.

"No, it's a free country, I can stand where I like," she replied before he looked up at her, his eyes glaring holes into her head. "If looks could kill," she commented sarcastically before Alex sighed in annoyance and stood up.

"Then you would have been dead the moment I saw you." He pushed passed her, his shoulder slamming into hers, causing her to step back from the force.

"You know, one day you're going to love me," she called out to him, he only laughed at her, while he was walking further away.

"Yeah, right. When that day comes, I'm going to put a bullet right between the eyes." He turned around to look at her, walking backward.

"Sounds painful." Knowing that she was getting on his nerves only made her want to continue, she wanted to see if he could combust.

"Yeah, for you." He turned back and set up more of the dummies to practice on.

"I'd just heal." She smirked as he stopped, his hands tightening their grips on the dummy, she knew if he held on any tighter he'd break the plastic.

"How fast do you heal?" He turned to her with a forced smile and his right arm resting on the shoulder on the dummy.

"Hella fast," she responded.

"Does the level of injury matter?" She furrowed her eyebrows and squinted at him, not sure where he was going.

"Depends," she said slowly.

Devin wasn't sure why he had a sudden interest in her when about two seconds beforehand he wanted her to leave him alone.

"Could you heal from me?" Devin shook her head in confusion. "Or would I just kill you?" She crossed her arms.

"What are you going to do? Shoot me?" She laughed before Alex smirked to himself, sending a ring of energy towards her. The red ring getting closer did not register with her until she was forced backward, slamming into the wall, slamming into some equipment and then landing on the floor. Her body began to shut down, she wasn't sure if it was going to heal.

Her body felt weak, paralysed even, but she knew that the feeling of not having any feeling was going to wear off soon enough. Her eyes opened to a blinding light, she let out a groan as she felt movement in her body as things began to heal and fix together again. She saw a worried Charles and Hank standing over her body. Sean and Raven were by her legs. Alex was off to the side somewhere—farthest away from her with his arms crossed.

"You shot me," Devin managed to mumble out. Alex huffed out in annoyance. "How long have-" She was interrupted by Hank shining more light into her eyes.

"A month," Charles said sadly as she pushed Hank away and tried to sit up. "I'd take it easy if I was you. You had full body burns, broken bones, a deflated lung, and a...You could have died, so just take it easy." He patted her leg gently.

"I've been taking it easy for a month, Professor, I'd say that's long enough." She pushed the blankets off and watched as a bone in her leg popped back, the skin sealing over.

"Oh, that's just gross." Sean covered his mouth with his hand before turning away, gagging. Devin rolled her eyes and got off the bed, Charles making a sound of protest while Hank helped her to her feet.

"No, gross is Alex's face, what I did was amazing," she sneered at Alex, who tightened his jaw and left the room.

"You tried to kill her?" Scott yelled loudly.

"Yeah, but now there is no one in the world that I'd want to haunt me more when they die than her, I'm not getting rid of her that easily." Devin winked at Alex, who grinned at back at her. He looked back to his brother. "One of my biggest regrets was doing that to her, I was bored for a whole month without her, don't want to go through that again." Devin smiled slightly at him and looked to the table.

"Are you guys dating or something? Is there something going on between you that I should know about?" Scott questioned, Devin got up and faked a yawn. "Where are you going?" Scott watched her walk to the door. "We need to talk about Jean!" He yelled before closing his mouth quickly.

"I'm going to war." She waved him off. "And just kiss her already." She didn't look back as she heard Scott again.

"So, are you dating anyone?"
