Training

Frisk tried her best to calm the nervous energy bubbling up in her chest, but nothing seemed to be working. She had decided earlier to use that newfound energy to clean the apartment top to bottom, scrubbing the leftover dishes from the night before, vacuuming the floor, dusting the ceiling fans, anything and everything to get rid of the overwhelming feeling of anxiousness.

She should have expected her life would no longer be the same, heck her appearance was proof enough of that, but a small nagging part of her mind yearned for the normalcy of being human. Although she didnt regret her choice, it was hard to understand the changes her body was going through.

Magic thrummed beneath her fingertips, underneath her skin, moving like liquid fire through her veins, filling her being with a newfound sense of power. It was almost addictive in nature, feeling so strong, complete even, but without a way to channel her newfound strength, her mind and nerves were set on edge.

Her poor, frazzled mind had been replaying the same questions on a loop, driving her mad with worry and fear for not only herself, but also the monsterkind.

What would befall her people now that she was no longer completely human? Would the humans uprise and claim them to be evil beings manipulating the poor ex human?

Deep down she knew her fears were a legitimate possibility, she had seen day to day how cruel the humans were to those they could not understand. It was a point of contention she dealt with every single day, and she feared that with her altered appearance, the humans would start a revolution, a mass genocide on all those she loved dear.

Her overworked brain had gone off on a depressing tangent and it was all she could to hold the tears at bay, refusing to let them fall. How could she uphold her duties to the monsters now that she was one of them? She had no answer, and it was only when Sans took the mop from her hands that she completely broke down, collapsing in his arms and spilling all her fears into his warm embrace.

Sans held fast, keeping her close to his heart as she sobbed, knowing deep down that he had changed her life irrevocably. His heart was filled with pride for the sweet hybrid in his arms, his soul humming in chest as he rocked her gently in his grip, whispering words of comfort into her hair. Part of him wished that she had never changed, even though the thought broke his heart. It would have been easier for everyone had she remained human, but he couldn't deny the surge of happiness filling him that she was now truly, in every sense of the word: a monster.

He had known this could happen, but he was blinded by the overwhelming urge to bond with her mind, body, and soul that he hadn't taken the time to truly explain to her the possibility of the change after their union, though even he had been caught off guard by the change.

Thoroughly ashamed, he whispered soft spoken apologies into her hair and clutched her firmly, wishing that he could take away the grief and insecurity. He had been selfish, having taken the choice away from her, and now he had to live with the consequences of his actions.

Hell, it wouldn't surprise him if she wanted to leave at this point. His rash decision had cost her humanity, had forced her to change, and if she never wanted to see him again he would understand. Oh, he'd be absolutely devastated, but he would not force her to stay, he would not take away her choice any longer.

He told her as much, resting his head in her messy bun in an attempt to hide his shame, hide the tears that cut wet paths down his cheeks.

He felt her stiffen in his arms, felt as she pushed him away, and he closed his eyes, unwilling to see the despair and regret that would undoubtedly show on her face. His heart couldn't take it, even though he knew he deserved it.

"Look at me," she whispered, grasping his cheek tenderly when he shook his denial.

Tender lips touched his own and he found himself following her command, the softly spoken words pressing against his lips. The two pulled away, and he stared into her eyes, biting back the urge to cry as he saw a bit of hesitancy in her gaze.

"Why didn't you tell me?" She whispered, clutching his hand gently, "You knew, but you didn't think to talk to me about such a life changing thing? That hurts, Sans."

He frowned and nodded, his eyes falling to the floor in his shame, "I know. I'm so sorry, Frisk. I wasn't thinking. I mean I had a feeling it could happen but I didn't know.."

He saw her nod and sigh softly before a small smile graced her lips. Tugging his head, she kissed him briefly and sat back, forcing his gaze to hers.

"Don't keep things like this from me anymore. Promise me, Sans?"

Sans blinked in disbelief, "I promise, Frisk."

Letting out a small huff of air, she pulled him close again, "I can't say that I'm pleased with how you handled the situation, but we were both a little excited. It was a possibility and although it is a bit strange to actually be a monster, I don't regret it one bit."

"So, you don't want to leave?" He forced himself to ask

She tilted her head to the side, "No, of course not, you silly skelly. Although, I gotta say I am concerned with the whole lighting up in flames thing.."

Tears ran down his cheek unbidden and before he could stop himself, Frisk was crushed into his chest as he held her tightly, his fears ebbing by the second. By some miracle, she wasn't going to leave, and his soul soared at the knowledge.

Smiling softly, he wiped at his cheeks and grasped her hands gently, "I won't let you hurt anyone. We'll work on it, baby. Your powers are new and a bit unstable, but that doesn't mean you can't learn."

"C-Can we learn now? All this magic is driving me crazy. I've got so much energy I don't even know what to do with it," she chuckled softly.

His smile stretched wider and he kissed her brow gently before helping her to stand, "Yeah, we probably should get to work on that. Don't want you to burn the house down or anything. Throw on something warm, sweetheart."

"Ha ha," she intoned flatly, moving to the bedroom to change into a large red sweater dress and throwing on a pair of black leggings underneath, "Just you wait."

Smiling softly, he threw on his hoodie before walking over and grasping her hand, teleporting them to the outskirts of Snowdin where the Cliffside broke off into two trails. One path led into the wintery town, but the other path he guided them down led to a rather spacious clearing just below the cliffside. Hundred of monster eyes could be seen from the various holes in the frost covered rock, but she focused on Sans as he let go of her hand and backed away from her prone form.

"Alright, love. We're going to focus on calling your power at will. One of the most important part of magic is knowing how to summon it," he mused, palm outstretched as he summoned a small blue flame in his grasp.

Frisk watched awestruck at the tiny flame in his palm, the fire flickering and crackling as it curled up into the snowy sky. Her eyes traveled up the arm and into his eyes, noting the silent encouragement in them.

Forcing down her newfound nervousness, she turned her palms upward and attempted to call upon her magic, just as Sans had done. After a dew moments of intense concentration, she huffed impatiently and sat down on an icy rock.

"I..don't know how," she mumbled, frowning down at her hands, willing the magic she felt so strongly to take shape in her palm.

She never caught the small smile on his face as he moved forward, grasping her hands gently and cupping them between his own, "It's not instinctual for you. You've never had magic like this, nor have you ever had a need to call on it."

She nodded, but kept her eyes trained on his grasp, listening intently to his words and pushing away her impatience. It would serve no purpose.

"Relax. You're over thinking this, babe. What I want you to do is close your eyes and picture a spark, imagine how it would feel in your hand, imagine the sensation," he guided, watching as she followed his instructions.

A minute passed, each moment grating on her nerves. Brow furrowing, she huffed in annoyance as she opened her eyes to gaze into understanding blue. Her face burned a light crimson as she averted her gaze, "I can't do it. I see the spark in my mind, but it won't manifest.."

He kissed her cheek, unable to stop himself at how cute she looked when she pouted, "You'll get it soon enough. Let's try a different approach. Picture that spark once more, but this time I want you to imagine something that makes you happy."

Something that makes me happy..

Her mind instantly turned to her monster friends. The ones who guided her through the caves all those years ago. The ones who stayed by her side and defended her against any who wished to harm her. The ones who loved her unconditionally. Her family.

Toriel and Asgore.

A small crackle sizzled in her palm, unnoticed as her concentration blocked out any outside forces.

Alphys and Undyne.

A spark danced between her fingers, lighting the encroaching darkness.

Mettaton and Papyrus.

The spark flickered, a purple flame no bigger than a marble left behind in its wake.

My husband, my heart.. my Sans.

The fire burned brighter and stronger, climbing and expanding until it was cradled gently in their cupped hands.

Sans smiled softly down at her focused expression, pride lighting his eyes as he gazed down at his brilliant wife, "Open your eyes, love."

Eyes cracking open, she was so excited to see the fire crackling in her embrace that she barely noticed his adoring look, too distracted by their accomplishment. Her magic swelled and if it hadn't been for her lack of focus, the flame would have grown too large to contain. Concentration faltering, the flame disappeared as quickly as it came, but she didn't care, laughing like mad and tackling her monster into the frozen earth.

"I did it! I did it!" She laughed, nuzzling into the toppled monster's arms, delighting into he way he cradled her head to his chest.

His rich laugh echoed through the air around them as he hugged her close, "Yes, you did, love. That was amazing, but be careful not to get so excited. You're still new to this and your emotions are going to fuel your powers. So from now on, try to remain calm unless you're with me, alright?"

She nodded and blushed at her outburst, but couldn't help the joy that filled her heart. Rolling off his chest, the two stood and brushed the snow off their bodies, giggling all the while.

"Alright. Let's get back to the task at hand. We've still got a long way to go," she smiled, determination filling her body.

The two spent the rest of the evening training, so lost in their work that they hadn't noticed the darkness encroach or the way the snow glistened underfoot. The pair had settled on a fallen log, intent on catching their breath after a particularly vigorous work out.

Oh yes, their efforts had paid off. Frisk had spent the majority of the day focusing her powers into her hands, trying to learn how to summon her powers at will. It wasn't perfect by any means, but with more practice he had no doubt she would be able to protect herself. Hopefully it would never come to that, but it was better to be safe than sorry.

He was thoroughly impressed by her level of determination. She had channeled her magic in different ways that he found fascinating. It would seem that she had a talent for defensive magic, her powers forming a barrier to shield her from harm.  As it was now, she could only cover the top of her chest, but with practice he figured she would be able to protect her entire body.

Strange though it was, he chalked it up as a blessing and encouraged her to practice building her barrier, increasing its size. Though, perhaps it had been too soon to attempt such a feat, judging by her panting form and sweat covered brow. He offered her a bottle of water, and contented himself to watching over her exhausted form, pulling her to his side as she snuggled into his warmth.

Truthfully, he had no idea how far her magic would span, but he would do his best to guide her along the way. Never would he want her to be unprepared, and if he could do anything to help he would.

She was his heart and soul and he would guide and protect her until his last breath. This he vowed.
